Ken Simm: For best results from Lancaster it is worth the extra effort of obtaining a group "A" receiving aerial. The dimensions of such aerials are designed to specifically cover the range of frequencies in use at Lancaster. The average DIY store only stocks wideband versions, which tend not to perform well at lower frequencies, so it might be necessary to go to a specialist retailer. A glance at neighbouring roof- tops might reveal if "normal sizes" are ok say up to about 18 elements- Triax supergain 18 or Antiference RX20A for example.

david: By not screening commercials it makes advertising revenue available to the commercial channels that would have been lost to them. There is the argument that BBC services should take commercials to fund the popular programs, the licence fee would then be split among all broadcasters who offer PSB content, including local TV and Sky News as well as providing Radio3, Radio4 and BBC local radio. Without the revenue from the licence fee to maintain the same level of revenue in broadcasting generally the existing terrestrial services "could" combine with Sky to offer a basic package which all viewers would take unless they did not want UK channels. Such an arrangement would be cost effective and simply an extension of existing pay tv practices. Catch up tv would then all be subscription based - ITV is already laying the foundations for this!

Charles Stuart: If your TV is working, why worry about replacing it? If you are using a PVR or Youview box with it the main function of the TV is for use as a monitor.

chris: According to Information Sheet 0908(20)9402 for Wrotham the erp is 250kW for Radios 2/3/4 and 125kW for Radio1. This is the combined power for mixed polarisation, so a dipole would effectively only see half that amount in whatever plane it was positioned. I wonder if the powers given now take that fact into account.

chris: The original VHF/FM transmitters were set up to transmit Radios 2/3/4 with horizontal polarisation. It was intended at that time for listeners to use fixed receivers connected to an outdoor aerial. From memory each service then had an erp of 120kW. In due course, in order to improve reception in cars, the Wrotham site was re-engineered with a new mast, antenna and transmitters.so that from December 1981 an additional vertical component of equal magnitude to the horizontal component was added to the signal. So now have 125kW horizontal plus 125kW vertical. This effectively doubled the transmitter power, hence the mention of "250kW Mixed polarisation" in transmitter listings. A listener using their existing horizontal aerial therefore received a signal of similar strength to the one they had before the alterations, whereas a listener with a vertical aerial would now also have a similar signal, when previously there would have been little or no reception - at least that is the theory, although in practice reflections from hills and buildings come into play.

Dave Tooley: Are you sure that PC World have tuned the TV to the same transmitter that you use at your house? Also, could you give more information with regard to the aerial that you are using and your location, preferably a postcode so that advice can be given with regard to what you are predicted to be able to receive.

Phil: ITV West might be in the 800s of the channel list, as the other services on PSB2 are stored along with Central (West Mids) in the LCN positions of the epg. Regarding the HD channels, these should be on UHF C22 from Ridge Hill. If they have been stored on an alternative frequency from a different transmitter the signal strength could have now dipped below the level required for reliable reception. Alternatively there could be interference affecting C22, or the signal might even be too strong, giving the same results as one which is too weak.
