Roger Martlew: The BBC still has to pay for the capacity on the multiplex, whether it is used or not. Going on line as an on-demand service makes it a lot easier to hide the reduction in new material, the "saving" being in lower production costs. It has been said, however that much of this will be diverted to new drama productions on BBC1.

GEM: Dorset is included in the Radio Solent service area. DAB coverage is sparse at present from Nine Barrow Down and Winterborne Stickland, not sure how effective the FM signal is from Bincombe Hill.

Briantist: The East Midlands region of Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Lincoln works very well. It is refered to as local news by the TV crews and for many of the local residents represents their daily work and leisure zone, including Skegness the nearest seaside town, the Derbyshire Peak District and both the out of town and city shopping areas used by many. I must admit that the Belmont region is a little odd, with Hull and Grimsby having little to do with Lincoln and even less with North Nottinghamshire or parts of Chesterfield where it gives the best signal. It is certainly true that instead of tuning in to BBC1 on a daily basis, if there was no East Midlands Today I would only view occasionally when there is a mystery drama series or New Tricks being shown.

David Roberts: The trouble is the whole of Wales as a single region does not work! Not only are activities in Cardiff too far away to have any relevence to the daily lives of residents of North Wales, there is the additional problem that in order to serve Cardiff and Swansea adequately on days when there is a lot of news for that area any news for North Wales risks being squeezed out completely. In the East Midlands we used to have a similar problem when news came from Birmingham!

Briantist: From page 13 of the document mentioned "Nations and Regions news programming where support for an additional provider of impartial and independant news alongside the BBC is a vital democratic safeguard." This suggests that not only will the BBC continue to provide regional news, but ITV and local TV channels should be offered support if required to maintain plurity of services.

ian from notts: Red button channels don't save on capacity on the multiplex as they are really just another service with an alternative means of access. The suggestion for satellite is that the SD service should automatically kick in when local news or other opt-outs are broadcast, enabling the national BBC1 HD service to be on 101 in the epg. This would avoid providing an HD stream for each region.

dusty: Not that odd really, such events can be predicted by studying the position of high pressure on a weather chart. Tropospheric ducting allows the signals to travel much further than normal by being reflected back to earth instead of continuing into space when they reach the horizon. The William Hepburn Tropospheric Ducting Forecast gives a set of charts showing the expected likelyhood of this phenomenon over forthcoming days. As a matter of interest I noticed last night that I was receiving BBC Radio 1 loud and clear on FM from Tacolneston in Norfolk on my mobile phone here in Derby.

MikeB: It is unfortunate (extremely irritating) that some manufacturers are making HD PVRs with no scart socket, thereby preventing their use on older TVs without the additional purchase of an HDMI to scart converter!
