Postcode is RG27 9PU. Following Hannington DSO I have auto-tuned Sony KDL-32EX523 TV. Unable to Rx PSB1 (BBC A) and PSB3 (BBC B) although they are stored in the 800s but showing 'no signal'. PSB2 (D3&4) ITV Meridian etc is loud and clear and also stored in the 800s. We would like to receive BBC 1 South which we received on analogue.

Rig is as follows:
'contract' type aerial on Hannington via Triax 3739STP Combiner to TV, plus a second 'contract' type aerial on Crystal Palace via Antiference PU1240 amplifier and then same combiner to TV.

All Crystal Palace services (PSB and COM) are loud and clear despite range and auto-stored 001 onwards. Re-connecting the amplifier makes no difference on the Hannington aerial.

Do I now need to upgrade to a Group B aerial to Rx all Hannington digital services?

Thank you, Andy.

Regardless of where the Hannington channels store themselves Hannington PSB1 and PSB3 BBC channels pixellate very badly and the TV mostly displays 'No Signal', whilst the Hannington PSB2 (ITV Meridian etc) is perfect. Conversely the 'stronger' Crystal Palace equivalent (Mux 2) pixellates lightly.

I can't understand why we can't receive BBC from Hannington since DSO but can receive ITV. We are close enough to the Tx. Is Hannington still attenuated to the South-East to minimise interference with Guildford? Could my Hannington BBC reception improve after Crystal Palace DSO?

Thanks, Andy.

Removing the combiner and feeding the Hannington aerial directly to my receiver pulls in PSB2 ONLY, albeit loud and clear. Hardly a glimmer of PSB1 or 3 despite being only a few kilometres away.

Effectively, the Hannington DSO has deprived me of BBC 1 South.

I rather suspect that the digital emissions from Hannington do not like my old aerial (which was good enough for analogue...!) I note that OFCOM DSO issue 3 shows that the Post-DSO aerial group is BH whereas the Pre-DSO aerial group was E/WH. (This contradicts the information under the signal strength map...)

I think I'll wait until after Crystal Palace DSO in case the south-easterly attenuation still exists...

Jeanette, you are not alone! I have spent all day faffing about responding to these very kind suggestions ending up with numerous combinations of aerials/amps/distributors/TVs/cables/splitters/combiners etc mainly just to get BBC South back!

For those who have kindly helped with their kind suggestions I have ended up with the old Hannington (BBC South analogue!) aerial connected directly to one TV which can now, just about, from 12 miles away, pull in 35 channels (including a finally restored and watchable BBC South!). Still no COM channels though, I shall wait until Guildford is switched off. A separate Crystal Palace aerial through an amplifier gives me 111 channels to a second TV and, oddly, only 83 to a third TV (No Mux 2 or Mux C).

I agree, we shouldn't have to mess about like this to get our old favourite BBC South back but, on the flip side, I have had huge amounts of exercise up and down ladders and up and down the stairs...

I'm off to watch the TV...but which TV in which room do I now watch for which channel....? I know, I shall refer to my reams of notes...DSO shouldn't have to be this difficult!

Bah. I give up. All those Hannington services I have managed to pull in are pixellating like crazy this weekend, amp or no amp, and are driving us bonkers. I have disconnected the Hannington aerial and have reverted to CP.

Goodbye BBC 1 South and ITV Meridian although only 12 miles away...DSO indeed...waste of space...

Keith Sheppard, Dave and Brian G. etc,
Same here in Hook. Hannington service significantly degraded since DSO inc PSB multiplexes. Exhausted all options except Ae change. Just waiting now for April DSO and hoping to Rx stable BBC South from then on.

Hannington reception problems finally cured by Crystal Palace DSO:

Since Hannington DSO I have suffered from continuous multiple channel pixellation and audio interference. Following this morning's Crystal Palace DSO and a re-tune I can, at last, receive stable Freeview inc BBC South and ITV Meridian. I simply re-tuned without doing anything to the rig therefore the problems can only have been the result of Hannington service provision, which is is not really acceptable especially since location is only 097/12 from the Tx.

Thank goodness that nonsense is over. I hope other people's reception problems in the Hannington easterly sector are similarly resolved.

tim welby:

Me too. I am also going to leave things alone until CP DSO is complete. We seem to be on a similar bearing from Hannington, which also seems to be co-linear with Guildford, and our symptoms seem to be similar to yours. I prematurely thought it was all over but last Monday Hannington dropped out completely (all six), and yesterday both Hannington and CP PSBs were pixellating, both with painful audio interference (not good mid-Grand National...)

tim:

Since DSO I am having a lot of reception problems here in RG27. I experience sudden pixellating and sudden loud audio interference on both Hannington and Crystal Palace. Prior to DSO we had no problems. After Hannington DSO I tried many things to find stable reception (other than changing the aerial...) to no avail so decided to leave it until after CP DSO. During yesterday (CP DSO) MUXs were dropping out but, using the OFCOM tables, I still couldn't find any pattern to the symptoms. Assuming CP DSO is now finally complete I may try again today. The barometric pressure was very low yesterday (976 HPa) but I am beginning to wonder if it is precipition-related rather than pressure-related. Should I really have to change both aerials to Wide-Band when reception was OK before DSO?

Goodbye Hannington, then, nice knowing you after 30 years with our local news...Hello Crystal Palace....with your irrelevant regional news...thank you so much DSO for this retrograde step...
