Below are all of Ian's postings, with the most recent are at the bottom of the page. One variable that is missing from the list is that when you select the SD channel, Humax HDRs offer you the option of watching it in HD instead. The same happens when you choose to record an SD programme - it offers to record the HD version instead.

I have steered clear of DAB mainly for the quantity over quality audio reasons. If I do need to hear a digital-only radio channel (not often), I use Freeview or BBC Radio iPlayer.
There is however another weakness of digital radio (Freeview/DAB/internet) that hasn't been mentioned. I can have multiple FM receivers in different rooms and they are all in sync. This doesn't work on DAB, even using identical receivers.

I'm curious - how accurate are the LL, LM and LPR plots on the main map?
Here in Horwich, although we are in Greater Manchester, we are getting the Liverpool LM mux loud and clear: (https://www.dropbox.com/s/gzr3twvnxnnhdft/Screenshot%202014-08-27%2023.07.36.png?dl=0)
According to the plots, we should have no signal whatsoever for LL, but should have some for LM.
We're no stranger to odd broadcast reception here: We cannot get Bolton FM (96.5FM) because someone had the bright idea to put it on the same frequency as Radio Wave which broadcasts at 200W from Blackpool tower, drowning out Bolton FM's 25W.
'My freeview list' for my postcode shows no entry for CH56, yet I am getting a signal almost as strong as some of the other more powerful muxes.

KMJ: so they do. Are the plots shown on the main map from a different source then?

Stuart Owens: Yes, typo on my part I meant Liverpool (LL). Still the wrong mux for our area.

Living roughly half-way between Winter Hill and Moel-y-Parc, my parents are used to having to deal with stopping the Welsh Channels getting through, but today their Humax box retune said which Region? (England-NorthWest selected) and they now have BBC Yorkshire, so no idea where that signal is coming from!

Mike: That's normal (if not annoying) for a Humax recorder. If, like me, you have custom firmware on the Humax recorder, you can add a feature to back up the schedule daily so you can just restore from backup.

I can understand the issue with Sky/Freesat as they would need separate HD transponders for each region, but on Freeview, the transmitter only transmits that's region's BBC1 or ITV1 anyway, so why can't they transmit the HD version of the local news?
