Channel 5 HD will launch on Freeview | Blogs
Thursday 3 November 2011 6:49PM

Anyone thinking of buying a Freeview HD TV (and maybe PVR) should ask if the channel numbers can be sorted to personal taste.

It's one of the reasons we went for Sonys. Having BBC HD on button 8 is great.

Whenever I use SkyHD and Freesat HD (or a DVB-T2 box) I'm reminded what a pain it to plough through the confusion of jumbled channels.

Bravo Bravia.

Steve W Some DVD recorders with hard drives let you effectively pause an incoming programme, including the Panasonics (though I've not used their most recent models).

Plug the Sat box (which I assume has a Scart output) into the Scart input of the DVD recorder. Press 'Record' then use the Play and Pause buttons till you get your sync.

Riccardo Capuano: "Is it possible for both myself and the Polish tenant to be able to watch Polish and Italian channels simultaneously?"

Yes. You could run FOUR boxes from that quad LNB on the dish. Or two recording boxes that require twin inputs.

@Briantist: The end of this excellent article promises "Part two follows tomorrow."

Did that appear, cos I haven't been able to find it?

Upgrade???

That's how Global Radio (the soulless Death Star of commercial radio) cynically spin this disastrous blow to choice in UK radio.

The normally cautious RadioToday newsletter exposed the truth:
'...The mother of all close downs. Listener choice will be drastically reduced.
For example, a listener in Central Lancashire can currently hear additional stations Capital FM, Choice FM, Gold, Heart, LBC, Real Radio XS, Transworld, UCB Inspirational and UCB Gospel on a DAB set via MXR.
This time next year, all of those stations will have effectively closed down in the regions.

Global Radio say they've done a £15m deal to move some services to other multiplexes.
We suspect only the services to be re-housed on local DAB are those which legally have to be on DAB to protect automatic FM licence renewals. This means NONE of the services above will be available in 12 months time in Preston.
So much for extending listener choice.

And what will happen to MXR-only stations such as Mountain FM in South Wales, Panjab Radio in the North East and Radio XL in the West Midlands? '

Channel 5 have been canny with their dough.

Pitiable ratings for HD channels may mean we get more SD dross. With the viewer having to actively seek out little known HD channel numbers with numerous button pushes, most apparently settle for SD!

Freeview should mandate easy number re-allocation in all new sets & boxes. Our Sonys make it a breeze. So BBC1HD is on button 1, ITVHD on 3 etc.

Yep, green is good red is bad.

Click and zoom in to the map, and see Red scores 5 and you'll likely be filtered and/or troubled. Orange scores 4 = better odds, 3 is amber, 2 is Yellow. Green scores 1 or zero, you can breathe easy.

Basically, if you can wave at some main masts like Winter Hill through the window you're screwed.

Course, you'll still need a 4G phone mast somewhere about the direction your rooftop aerial points.

Though I've a hunch I'll be as lucky with that as I am with the clump of trees (complete with preservation order) at 28 degrees East, precisely blocking UK satellite signals for most of the year.
