Simon: How is this 'on demand' model supposed to work? At least in a way which is economically viable. It would be interesting to hear one that works, since nobody has come up with one yet.
As for quality - satisfaction with BBC programmes is generally very high, looking at polling. Its also worth pointing out that Sky subscribers, which have access (which they pay a lot more for) to a much larger amount of programming than terrestial, use the BBC at pretty much the same level as everyone else. As you say, quantity isn't everything.

brianist: I have to admit that my dealings with Ofcom were pretty useless. I was one of those who complained after C4's transmission of 'The Great Global Warming Swindle' some years ago. Ofcoms basic answer to our complains was 'its science, its complicated, so who can say? We are so blond....'
Your right about the independence factor. The BBC would then come under an organisation whose makeup is as follows:
'The Board comprises a Chairman appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport; such number of other non-executive members as the Secretary of State may appoint and the executive members (the Chief Executive and any other executive members (if any) as determined by the non-executive Board members). '
The politican doesn't even have to be Machiavellian! Having said that, Seamus Milnes article not so long ago about how his father was forced out by Thatcher shows that if they want something, they'll get it, rules or not.

Briantist: I think many of us were speechless about Teresa May's idea, including some of the Cabinet! It should at least give work to underemployed actors doing voice overs, so there is always a silver lining. Its wont end well, but the fact that even the Murdoch press thought it a terrible idea might mean its quietly dropped.
I totally agree with you about using Ofcom. Its key personnel are essentially all appointed by the government of the day, and that influence will be used in some way, usually to the bad. Thats not to say that the BBC is independent either - the chair, or the head of the BBC Trust has normally ended up being a former high ranking member of the ruling party (Patten) or a chosen ally (Hussey). However, they do tend to end up going native, so you can see why Ofcom is an attractive alternative - they are under the thumb, but norminally 'independent'.

John S: First question to ask is WHY ARE YOU STILL USING SCARTS!
Sorry, but I'm shouting for effect. Last November, I said the same thing, and I suspect your problem is because you are using scarts, with odd settings. I think that you've set up the scarts so the scarts on both TV and VCR are inputs, hence nowt coming out!
OK - aerial lead is kind of fine. Its a bit of a long chain, but it seems to work. Please call your PVR a PVR, a Philips, etc - calling it a Freeview box confuses the life out of everyone, including me!
HDMI from Philips to TV, using whatever HDMI's work, but HDMI is best. With the two HDMI ports that are left, connect one to the Panasonic. You should automatically get the Samsung's internal tuner when the TV is switched on, unless the PVR or Panasonic is switched on. You should then be able to switch between HDMI's via the source button.
Thats it. Remove the scart leads, put them in a box, seal it, and leave them alone. Do not touch them again. You dont need them. As Edna 'E' Mode almost said in 'The Incrediables', 'No Scarts!'

Amanda: Solent TV probably has an operating budget of about tuppence, hence the lack of amazing programming, judging by the other local TV channels.
Chris Pearce: Since its lack of budget means that its studios are at Highbury College in Cosham, and its programming is largely that of a local radio station (which is only on for about 8 hours at most, and much less if you strip out the 3 hours of music videos), why would Ofcom want to award the franchise to Thats Solent?

david brydon: Assuming the the Virgin TV feed is fine, then its the aerial or splitter. If the splitter is powered, then it could be the power supply. Think about your aerial - its on the roof in all weathers, exposed to all the elements. Joints let in moisture, cables get worn or frayed, or just corroded.
You hav'nt given us a postcode, so we have no idea what sort of signal your supposed to get, but it might be more than fine, so that you might be able to replace a powered splitter with an unpowered one. Check from the splitter box and back to the aerial.

Of course you could look at Brian's well presented articles on the BBC and its funding, and base a coherent opinion on that, but why bother?

Darran: To be perfectly honest, all PVR's these days should have HD tuners as standard (Argos are selling some el cheap Bush ones without them, but I wouldn't bother). A T2 tuner is the default, and since that will be the standard tuner within the next couple of years, I certainly wouldn't be buying one without HD.
Best bets? Despite some negative comments about Humax, its the standard one we recommend (the BT version with Youview is actually slightly cheaper), or the Panasonic equivalent. You'll want a hard drive of 500gb or above, and about a hundred and fifty plus is what I'd expect to pay.
