Pete : I think your going to need the reception gurus on this one - your reception looks patchy for a main transmitter, but not bad for a light one, such as Rouncefall or Burnham.
Could you look to see your signal strength/quality, and which channel your TV is on (say 23, 44, etc). And which way your aerial is facing.

Peter Vile: ok - start with connecting up using the best connections you can - so hdmi if possible , so certainly from freesat box to tv. You don't mention the model if sharp , so the number of hdmi connections is unclear. If you cannot use hdmi, then scart. So scart (if no choice) from recorder to tv, and scart from freesat box to recorder.
That way you should have freeview on tv(internal), freesat (via box and in HD), and the ability to record from freesat box in standard, and hopefully to record in freeview from its own tuner.
When parts of this system start to die, just buy a freesat or freeview recorder, it will make life easier and will be in HD and have a large hard drive. The toshiba recorder can be replaced by a not dissimilar Panasonic, but they are on the way out, and new ones do not have VCR or dvd's. and please don't buy another Sharp....

Peter Vile: your fine apart from connecting the recorder to the freesat box- hdmi is normally great, but transfering from the freesat to the recorder you'll be needing to use scart, and selecting the correct av line in on the recorder .
If it does not work first time, then start logically, and do one bit at a time.
Hopefully you've transferred all your videos by now, so it's just the DVD you'll use.

Alison Fairgrieve: yes, as long as it has a scart or hdmi connection, that's fine. Since you will need to use HDMI in order to watch HD channels, you that if poss. Basically your just using the Freesat box like another digibox.

Vicky: If all your TV's come off the same aerial, then its likely to be your system at fault. None of your possible transmitters are offline (although Crystal Palace is having engineering work).
Although the aerial looks fine, it could be a splitter, loose cable, etc. For instance, if you get a lot of rain suddenly, a loose or damaged cable could have a problem with water, then dry out over a number of days and be OK again, until the next rain comes..
If you can follow the cable to the source of the problem, great, but I suspect this needs a professional.

Richard: Since your not too far from Crystal Palace, and that transmitter is fine, look at your system. Check aerial lead, and cables up the aerial itself, because thats probably where the problem is.

Pete: Your only 8km from Bluebell Hill (which seemingly is not your best transmitter according to Digital Uk...) - so check your signal strength - if its 100% or close then its probably too high.
