Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter

Oliver:

Hi Oliver, I hadn't appreciated that the fatal error on posting was still occurring as I haven't had it myself recently. I wish the site owner would try and fix these problems.

It will depend on exactly where your locale is, parts of the general area won't get brilliant reception from Winter Hill, but especially C55. The Planned Engineering lists aren't always 100% accurate so there may be work going on at present affecting your reception.
As for the GIM mux, it's apparently not uncommon for it to have "technical" problems - it's not maintained by the same company that do the main multiplexes! A tip that I picked up was a good way to try and get issues resolved quickly was to phone TV Warehouse and tell them you were struggling to watch as there seemed to be something wrong with transmission (if you can't see what they're selling you can't buy) - they know exactly who to chase!

I would contact https://restoretv.uk/ and ask them if there's a new mast that'll affect your reception in your postcode. If they say yes, ask them why they haven't sent out postcards - not the first time I've heard this of late, they don't seem to be doing an effective job!
If they say no, it could be down to engineering so hopefully will resolve soon. Don't forget any 700MHz filter they supply will cut out C55. You could ask them if they have any C60 filters left (that was to do with the previous 800MHz clearance) but may cut down on any signals close to and above C55 if they aren't that strong/close to you.

All free TV channels in the UK

Joan:

Afraid not, only on Freesat or Sky.
See Channel listings for Industry Professionals | Freeview for a list of the Freeview channels and which multiplexes they are carried on.
Depending on location, you may not be able to receive all/any of the COM or Local multiplexes.

Guildford (Surrey, England) DAB transmitter
Thursday 10 March 2022 9:37PM

Mike O'Sullivan:

That's odd, have you got anything now? The BBC, who are normally good at reporting any problems affecting their multiplexes, haven't listed any faults for Guildford (the transmitter is on the Hogs Back) or Midhurst.
All the commercial multiplexes are on the same Guildford transmitter, supposedly including London 1,2,&3 multiplexes, but trying to find any fault reports for them is needle in a haystack stuff.

Try another radio, maybe a neighbour if need be.
If you are still having a problem, post back and we'll see if there's any further news.

Benski:

I'm afraid there are many listings around this site, depending on where you look, that haven't been updated as the site owner hasn't managed to find the time to do them all.

See Channel listings for Industry Professionals | Freeview for what is normally an up-to-date list of the channels and the multiplexes they are carried on.

BBC Three
Saturday 12 March 2022 9:58PM

Valerie Carr :

There are dozens of transmitters in the North West, some main and some relays but as you haven't given a full postcode, we don't know which one.
That said, BBC3 is available from all transmitters in SD and HD (HD assumes you have an HD/T2 tuner in your TV).
If you get BBC1 and BBC2 then you should get BBC3, same with BBC1 HD and BBC2 HD you should get BBC3 HD.
Did you retune at the end of January?
BBC3 (SD) is at LCN23 in your EPG and BBC3 HD is at LCN109 in your EPG.

Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter
Saturday 12 March 2022 10:14PM

Oliver:

Any very strong signal within the band will cause the receiver to lose some sensitivity, this will have a more marked effect on any of the weak signals, especially if those may be subject to interference from other transmitters in some locations. At least your GMAN signal is a bit better.
Virtually all aerials (except log-periodics) have more gain at the higher frequencies within their band.
If the HD channels on COM7 don't move to another HD mux (which would involve at least one other mux having to convert to T2) then I'd guess quite a few people will add Freesat - a lot of modern TVs already have a satellite tuner, so just a dish and LNB would be needed.

Did restoretv.uk explain why they hadn't bothered sending out postcards?

Craigkelly (Fife, Scotland) transmitter
Sunday 13 March 2022 6:52PM

Colin brown:

There are no reported problems that I can find at Craigkelly and it's not currently listed for Planned Engineering.
(Note - the channels listing at the top of the page is out of date as the site owner hasn't found time to do all the updates since 700MHz Clearance. COM6 is on C37, not 38.)

If you are correctly tuned, Other than that, check that your aerial seems intact and pointing in the correct direction with the rods (or squashed Xs) horizontal and that your downlead looks undamaged and isn't flapping in the wind.
Also check all you coax plugs, connections, flyleads etc, unplug connectors check for corrosion or other problems and reconnect them, especially if you've changed anything about in your installation recently. Flyleads can be a common problem, try swapping them.
Aerial misalignments, problematic connections, water ingress etc. can seem to affect reception of just AN individual or several multiplexes.

Craig Procter:

What channels you might receive will depend on which transmitter(s) you may be able to receive with a good enough signal. Because of the nature of the terrain in your area and between you and the various transmitters that will be very location dependent.

What channels do you get at present? Which transmitter do you currently get your signals from? Which way are your neighbour's aerials pointing?
The aerial that would be best will depend on the transmitter and predicted signal strength and we can't advise on that without a full postcode.

In general, you MAY possibly get signals from one (or more, maybe none) transmitters in that area. Two relay transmitters Exeter St. Thomas & Honiton, and two main transmitters Stockland Hill (SW region) & Mendip (W region). For either of those relays (they only transmit the main PSB multiplexes) a Group B aerial could be best.
For Stockland Hill a Group A aerial could be best, or a Group K aerial for Mendip.
It very much depends on signal strength, if you can get good strong signals, then a Group T/Wideband or Group K may do in all those situations.

If you provide a full postcode, we should be able to offer more specific advise.

Craig Procter:

To add to my previous, you may already be getting some signals from Stcokland Hill, but whether you can/do get all multiplexes reliably will not only depend on location but the condition of your aerial installation. As already mentioned, a Group A aerial for Stockland Hill could be the best. You won't get any more multiplexes with a wideband!

DAB transmitter | free and easy
Tuesday 15 March 2022 12:25AM

Steve Scutt:

It seems all the multiplexes serving your area are on the Tapton Hill transmitter. The BBC aren't reporting any problems with multiplexes carrying their services (as you say they are OK in any event).
I'm afraid trying to find details of faults or maintenance affecting the commercial multiplexes can be like trying to get blood from a stone!
If the problems continue tomorrow , as it's Scala that you find is affected, I would try ringing them and ask them to contact the "transmitter" people to find out why there's suddenly problems with reception in Central Sheffield.
Try 0333 321 5555. As they are part of Bauer Media, you may find that's Bauer's number, but they should still be able to help. If that fails, try Twitter if you have access @ScalaRadio or for Bauer @bauermedia.
Failing all that use this webform About & contact - Digital Radio UK and additionally moan about the difficulty in finding out about transmitter problems.
