John mcevoy :

I'm not sure who you think Mister Johns is as you seem to have addressed the comment to him, but I suspect that wasn't the intention.
This is not the broadcaster's website, it's an independent technical help-site. You need to address you query to them, they won't see your comment here in any event.
Visit WBD's website (Warner Bros. Discovery - the owner) for information about Quest.

Robert :

Don't agree with you. he's quite right about a lot of the much smaller broadcasters IMHO. There's just not enough money to go around. That situation was exacerbated during covid which is why COM8 closed down

The BBC have a logged fault for Dorking -
Freeview: Off the air due to a fault from 25 Dec 11:44. .
So no doubt the engineers will be working on it.

anthony shortt:

The Smithsonian channel is part of Paramount, which in turn is owned by Viacom CBS who own Channel5.

There seems to be a limited number of shows on My5, whether more will be added when they stop broadcasting on Freeview, they don't have an App of Freeview Play (yet?).

For others you might find you need
Paramount+ United Kingdom Paramount+ United Kingdom - Watch TV Shows, Movies, Originals and More

As for the sound, as most programmes are already recorded there's not a lot you can do, except PERHAPS depending on the sound encoding, if you have a 5.1 surround system you MIGHT be able to enhance the centre channel which normally has the speech.
Other than that try contacting Smithsonian about subtitles Smithsonian Channel: It's Brighter Here

I'm afraid the problem with music drowning out speech/commentary is prevalent these days, reports/complaints often appearing in the MSM. I believe it's the way so-called sound "engineers" and producers are trained these days. They just sit there looking at their LED PPMs instead of listening to the overall sound output, or even "off-air" with live shows. They just don't seem to have a clue.

Both COMs 7&8 have closed down to make more room for mobile signals but COM8 closed early because of the pandemic in June 2020 I provided links previously to the statement that was issued, you need to check your facts Robert before spouting off.

Again I repeat you do not know what you are talking about. The statement about the closure of COM8 came straight from the horse's mouth. If you don't want to believe it, write to Arqiva yourself!
I don't know about misguided, but you are coming over as completely ignorant.

Robert Lee:

Hi. I can't currently find any BBC reports about any faults, and theirs no current weather conditions that might affecting signal transmission according to the various predictions.

It might just be worth double checking your aerial is still pointing correctly. Recent winds may have shifted it.
How old is the FM aerial and downlead? Any water ingress or bad connections maybe causing standing waves in the cable which will be frequency dependant,, again worth checking connections etc.

If the problem is the same when you see this reply, post back and I'll check again for BBC reports.

Hi. Not a good idea to rescan when you have pixellated pictures or no signal. In most cases it will just clear the correct tuning that you had. Retuning does not affect signal strength or quality.
I can't find any recent reports of transmitter faults, and it's not on the current list for Planned Engineering.

The fact that you and a neighbour have the same problem suggests that you may have some local interference if it's not an as yet unreported transmitter fault.
Is this affecting all TV channels, or just some of them - if some which ones? Are they exactly the same as your neighbour's?
Have a look in your TV Tuning section for Signal Strength and Quality figures for each multiplex's UHF channel, it maybe called Signal Test or in manual tuning. It will vary from model to model.
Posting the figures may help identify an issue.

Have you had a postcard from restoretv.uk at all, or have there been any new mobile phone masts spring up nearby - especially on the line of sight to the transmitter?
LED Xmas light and other gadgets can cause interference, try switching off anything that wasn't on prior to the problem. Even your neighbour's gadgets could affect you and visa versa.

Nicholas Anderson:

My view on FM is slightly different. There are still many "audiophiles", for want of a better term, that listen on FM. Whilst the BBC continue to use DAB instead of the better quality & compression techniques of DAB+ may of those listeners aren't going to be readily converted to DAB(+). One of the supposed reasons that the BBC are not yet moving more rapidly in that direction is the lower number of users with DAB+ radios, and they are afraid of losing listeners!
The other issue is that DAB coverage in general in many more rural areas is grossly inadequate - just like mobile phone coverage. That's another thing that needs fixing. DAB transmission should be added to many FM transmission sites that don't have it.

To encourage more to get DAB+ receivers, I would start by converting Radios 1 & 3 to DAB+. A lot of the younger generation have modern tech and many probably have DAB+ if they listen to radio. Audiophiles generally have quite expensive equipment and if the haven't already got a DAB+ tuner, they can probably afford to buy one.
Many of the commercial broadcasters have already moved to DAB+

OFCOM should also promote conversion to DAB+, make it clear that retailers who sell DAB equipment that don't make it clear it's not DAB+ and therefore will receive a limited number of stations, could end up being prosecuted for mis-selling.
