Denyse Shorrocks:

For anyone to suggest how to improve your reception it is essential to provide a full post code. Only with that information can we determine which transmitter your should be using and whether there are any objects in the transmission path to cause reception difficulties.

John:

Because of tropospheric layer inversion effects. It is perfectly normal and has been happening for many, many years with UHF signal transmissions. As it is a natural phenomenon there is nopthing anyone can do about it. DO NOT retune your equipment else you are very likely to lose even nmore channels.

James:

A post code is essential as there are at least 4 transmitters serving the Bristol area. Without know which you use it is impossible to give any advice.

David Wilson:

Natural atmospheric effects. DO NOT retune.

Graham Hill:

If the reception on the TV is fine then that suggests the aerial system and cabling are fine. However, it does suggest that the box has a potential fault. Try disconnecting it completely from the signal and mains supply for at least five minutes. then reconnect and allow the box to reset itself, usually another 5 minutes is sufficient. Then check whether reception has returned to normal. If it has then your fine until a further reset becomes necessary. If it happens again that suggests that the box it developing a fault.

We still need to know your post code in full so we can determine which os the possible transmitters you might be using and whether there are any known problems. Without that information we cannot help.

Rowridge (Isle Of Wight, England) transmitter
Saturday 3 December 2016 1:38PM

Stuart Tier:

Further to that said by MikeB, rather than adding a masthead amplifier (which is a single in and single out device) you would do better to include a distribution amplifier mounted in the loft. You may need to include an attenuator if the resultant signal strength is too high, you do not want 100% - especially on the HD channels as that tends to cause signal breakup as there is too much of it.

A distribution unit takes several inputs, such as UHF TV and DAB radio if wanted (with a suitable aerial) and feeds the signals to the several outlets on the unit. Some have four such but other have eight or more. Use good quality cable and fit the plugs carefully to avoid the fine braiding causing a short circuit which would kill the signals.

According to the data contained in the boxes below yours with the post code (thanks for that) you should be using the Mendip transmitter which is at a bearing of 182 degrees from your location. That is a full service transmitter using channels 49, 54, 58, 48, 56, 52, 33, 35 and 51. Channels 58, 33 and 345 are HD transmissions and you need a full HD set, not just an 'HD ready' type, to get those services. Channel 51 is used for Local Bristol services.

So check the approximate direction of your aerial and then check each of these for signal strength, but do not perform a retune yet. You want between 65% and 85% strength, any less or any more will cause apparent 'loss of signal' symptoms and picture and/or sound problems.

Let us know what strengths you get, then we may be able to advise further.

Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat
Sunday 4 December 2016 1:11PM

Morgan:

A Freesat box will always receive the complete range of channels provided by Freesat. If you are using a Sky box without a subscription then you do not receive all of the Freesat channels, just the 'free to air' channels present on the Sky service.

Hope that clarifies the situation for you?

James:

If your aerial is pointing approximately North then it is not pointing at any of the available transmitters and may be getting some signal;s from Kings Weston Hill, which will give very poor reception at your location.

If it is indeed looking northwards, then it needs to be changed to look at Mendip. However, when tuning be careful to avoid any signals from the Ilchester Crescent one.
