James:

Our posts overlapped. I susopect that some of the signals you are trying to watch may be from Ilchester Crescent, so giving poor results. Manually tune to the given channels from Mendip and let us know if that has improved things.

Alex Romanov:

I'm not surprised as you have not told us as yet what you have done to improve the signal levels. Until you take remedial action there is little we can do to assist any further.

James:

Glad to hear that 'normal service has resumed' today. It's one of the problems with having to have a number of transmitters in a relatively small area. At least you have your channels back and can enjoy what is on offer.

Alexei Romanov:

What are you doing to have your aerial system problems rectified? The problems will not be resolved until *you* do something about it, it will not go away on its own.

Movie Mix
Tuesday 6 December 2016 1:29PM

Bayard Smith:

If it is the first time that Movie Mix has shown it then it is a premier. It does not matter that other stations may have run it, even in the same week or same day, that as it is the first time on that channel it is definitely a premier by definition.

Indoor aerials | Installing
Tuesday 6 December 2016 1:44PM

andrew Rose:

None! You need an aerial outside above the roof, usually they are mounted on the chimney stack. Aerials in the room are very ineffective and suffer from all sorts of problems! Even people moving in the room will cause reception variations.

Have an aerial fitted outside to get best results. It needs to be a Group A or a log-periodic type (that covers all current and future channels) with good quality cabling. You will likely not need any sort of amplifier to work with your local Freeview 'Lite' transmitter. It uses channels 22, 25 and 28 to transmit the signals, see Which Freeview channels does the Wootton Courtenay transmitter broadcast? for more details.

Denzil:

Satellite dishes in the UK DO NOT need an earth connection, indeed that could be dangerous as it would make the dish attract lightening! The same applies to Freeview aerials. Other countries may have different thoughts but in the UK they are definitely not required. (Remember that I wrote some of the installation guides when the Astra satellites as used by Sky and others were launched.)

As for sharing, that is not a good idea as it connects your house supply to theirs, even if indirectly. If your property is on a PME mains supply system it would be detrimental to the safety of that system. Further, it links your satellite equipment to theirs and if there is any problem with their mains supply it will affect you house too! So though it sounds an interesting idea it is not a good one and should be avoided at all costs because of the inherent potential dangers.

If you agree to the contractors access your property, even if only your garden, make sure that your neighbour and the contractor understand that they are fully responsible for all the work and any problems or damage cause by such work. You do not have to grant then permission to access but if you do you should require them to provide an insurance indemnity against any damage or legal issues.

If you decide you want a satellite service, have your own dish installed on your property. Bear in mind that such dishes must comply with planning regulations.

Alexei Romanov:

It is NOT the transmissions else tens of thousands of people using the Black Hill transmitter would all have the same problem and these pages would be swamped with requests for help. As there are no such requests it IS your own equipment at fault and YOU are responsible for having that corrected at your expense.

Until you have a professional visit and correct your equipment fault, I will not be responding any further and I doubt other experienced contributors will either.

Gautham:

I used to live near Lineham and Calne transmitter does not coveranything outside of a limited area of Calne. It is mainly an 'in fill' transmitter for those areas of Calne, such as parts of Oxford Road and parts of London Road, that are screened from the main Mendip transmitter by the hills at Sandy Lane and Derry Hill.

Royal Wootton Bassett is admirably covered by the full service Mendip transmitter. Look at Which Freeview channels does the Mendip transmitter broadcast? for details of the transmitter and the channels it uses.

Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter

Anne Marie Griffiths:

Your should NOT have retuned. All you have achieved is loss of services! Patience until the problem clears is hat you needed.

Now you will need to retune each day until your equipment finds the service again. It was almost certainly due to the weather conditions.
