Full technical details of Freeview
Monday 23 January 2017 4:20PM

Lee Radford:

You should be using the Waltham transmitter at your location so your aerial should be aimed at 111 degrees, roughly south east. So check that it is pointing in that general direction first. I know from personal experience, having worked as a TV service engineer in that area some years ago, that reception in your part of Clifton is generally very good. So please will you check what the signal strengths are for the multiplexes from Waltham. It might just be that you have too little signal (unlikely to be too much) for that multiplex. Also, can you confirm that your TV set or STB is HD equipped, not just HD capable? To get COM8, which includes your wanted channel, you need a TV with a DVB-T2 tuner and older sets as well as those not full HD equipped cannot receive those transmissions.

Note also that COM8 on Ch37 is transmitted at about half the power of the main PCB services. You can see more information about what Waltham transmits at https://ukfree.tv/transmi…ham.

Greg Harper:

Further to that said by StevensOnln1, a laptop aerial is unsuitable for TV reception. It is designed to operate with WiFi signals in the 2.4 GHz band whereas Freeview digital TV is broadcast in the 450-800 MHz range. That means your WiFi aerial is not of the correct dimensions for the TV signals to get satisfactory reception. The size of the elements is critical for good reception.

In Kingswood, not all homes can get signals from Mendip due to the terrain and so there are smaller local transmitters nearby. Giving a full post code would reveal those that may be beneficial to you. You should also invest in a proper log-periodic aerial that is specifically designed for use with Freeview signals that are currently broadcast and also for the planned future changes.

Deborah:

Falmouth is not served by the Winter Hill transmitter, which is near Bolton in Lancashire! If you give a full post code, we can advise which transmitter would be more appropriate.

Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter
Tuesday 24 January 2017 4:17PM

I Lewis:

Recent work on the transmitters at Winter Hill were to the DAB one and not the TV ones, so nop change at the transmitter end. Check all the aerial connections to your equipment first and then check what the signal strengths are for each service. They should all be between 55% and 80%, any less or any more will cause problems.

pick

Stm Islam:

Ask Pick themselves using the website stated above. As far as I am aware they do not provide a web-based streaming service and are not part of any 'catch up' service at present.

Roy Purssell:

A signal strength on 30% is too low and will give rise to the problem you report. You need to check all your aerial connections and ensure the plugs all have good, clean contacts and fit firmly into their sockets.

Please then perform the signal strength checks suggested by MikeB. Report the results here and include a full post code please.

Graham Bastin:

To determine which transmitter you are using we need a full post code for your location. Without that information it is impossible to assist in any meaningful way.

Martin:

If you are unwilling/unable to give the source of your information we cannot check it out for ourselves. So why should we take note of such unsubstantiated 'data'? All we need to know is where on the web the information is given that you are quoting. If it is not freely published on the web then it cannot be regarded as official or reliable.

Briantist goes to great lengths to ensure the information he gives comes from reliable sources. Maybe you should use the Feedback page at Feedback to inform him of your apparent concerns.
