jason dee: Check to make sure that when you were holding the back up button in on the box waiting until all the LED's lit up before releasing same that you didn't move it slightly whereby the scart plug in the back became dislodged, as apart from that it doesn't look good along the lines that something possibly glitched during the upgrade.

If the scart plug is OK then try another software update, as thats about all you can do.

Janet Armstrong: Your Sky+ box has two inputs that are totally independent of each other although the recorder side is connected to the No2 input and which must be OK if its recording OK, and so the "no signal" warning can indicate a fault on No1's input caused by a faulty lead / connector or even the port on the LNB thats used for No1's input being defective.

When the box isn't recording anything select BBC1 or ITV1 on the box and check if a picture is showing, if it isnt then swap No2 input over to No1 and see if that brings the picture back on again, if it does then that indicates either a faulty coax lead of "F" connector especially at the dish end, or maybe that port on the LNB has failed.

Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter
Saturday 28 July 2012 12:16AM

Joe: Winter Hill is located 9 miles away from your location @ 184 degrees and uses (H) polarity signals, whereas Darwin is at 4 miles 147 degrees (V) polarity, and so should you be able to access it you could swing your aerial around clockwise (from above) to the 184 degree position and alter it to horizontal polarisation and see how that goes.

Unfortunately I cant check the predictions for reception for Winter Hill as DUK's predictor refuses to accept the code provided.

By the way Winter Hills channels are : 62 - 59 - 54(HD) - 58 - 61 - 55.

Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter
Saturday 28 July 2012 11:54AM

Joe: Just checked again using the new info and which hasn't really made that much of a difference, insomuch that Darwen is still at 4 miles but at 132 degrees but with Winter Hill being slightly closer than before @ 7 miles / 183 degrees.

By the way Darwen is only a 100 watt station whereas Winter Hill is 100Kw, so I would be inclined to do as suggested using the same aerial albeit that it "might" be one group low depending on what had been fitted.

If you try as was suggested check what colour the plastic end plug is that's fitted at the front end of the horizontal support arm that the elements are fitted on to, as that indicates an aerials band grouping.

Only asking this out of interest!

Nick: Just a little addition, Re: > I then put aerial (1) back, pointed the same way, and got nothing <, "if" by that you are meaning that when you reconnected No1 aerial into the box again and pointed it in the same direction as was done with the No 2 aerial whereby it received all muxes from Sudbury on by doing this you got nothing, then that would suggest that No1 aerial "is" acting correctly, and that the the second possible reason (re: directors) could be responsible for this strange effect occurring on No 2 aerial, unless that is there was a coax braiding connection problem on the No2 aerial.

michael hughes: There is nothing to stop you from installing a satellite dish and using it for either Freesat or the equivalent from Sky and using either of these purely on stand alone basis and not connected into anything you presently use except the TV, you could then just keep the BT Vision box for when you wish to use its on line facilities via the router.

The only problem is when it comes to Sky sports etc as only a Sky box (with contract) can provide these facilities, and as would most likely be expected, at a higher cost than your BT vision presently is.

Graham: Although its not known what method you are using to supply your various devices with a signal, but for reliability of reception then a powered splitter should always be used with the number of outlets on it chosen to match the devices used, as this is the only way of guaranteeing that each device is supplied with the same level of signal.

It could simply be the case that either your DVD is less sensitive than the rest of the devices or that the signal to it is via daisy chaining from some other device into its RF input, or even that during a retuning exercise its picked up its ITV mux from another source, so if you are using Tacolneston carry out a signal check on ITV to make sure mux Ch59 is seen and not anything else.

By the way Sudbury is indicated as being best for reception on the code provided and with Sandy and Tacolneston being about the same as each other with the exception of the latter's commercials, as they are permanently shown with the status of being "variable" which in plain terms can mean unreliable at times.

It would also be of interest to know what model number of Panasonic is being referred to.

T Whitham: You cannot use Satellite dish leads for anything other than Sky or Freesat as they are totally incompatible with terrestrial Freeview via a normal aerial.

If its twin input leads then the previous occupier has either had a Sky+ box which records, or alternatively a twin tuner Freesat PVR (recorder) as Freesat and Sky use exactly the same dish arrangements, so your son could either pick up an old standard Sky box which doesn't require a card to be able to view normal channels, or alternative purchase an ordinary Freesat receiver, both only using one of the dish leads and with the other not being connected to anything.

T Whitham: On reading your posting again something that you said caused me to wonder if you had made sure that you were scanning on DVB Freeview and not analogue? as its impossible for a picture to be snowy on Freeview, that being something confined to analogue reception.

Not of course that this makes any difference to the advice given, but though in some very high signal strength areas Freeview can be received on a set top aerial or even a short piece of wire connected into the aerial socket, but as you haven't given your son's post code (or one from nearby) whether this situation is liable to apply or not cannot be verified either way.
