Stephen: Satellite receivers send polarity switching commands to the LNB, this making it whereby if more than one satellite receiver is being used on a dish with only one LNB connection, then both (or all) devices have to be viewing programmes on the same polarity of signal, there is no way around this.

So if you are considering purchasing a Freesat recorder (PVR) then the situation is worse, as even although the recorder will no doubt have a twin tuner, exactly the same conditions apply to it as does to individual Satellite receivers, as any recordings you make will have to be made on programmes using the same polarity of signal.

Much as you do not wish to, but you will never have a satisfactory system unless you run at least one other co-ax and fit an LNB on the dish with more than one outlet.

Andy A: Is their aerial actually pointing towards Belmont or is it Emley Moor? as Belmont is predicted as having just about the same reception status as Emley Moor, although admittedly the signal path between
Belmont and the code provided could well be partially obstructed by not only the trees you have mentioned but others along the way.

I know you say that you have tried re-sets on the box, but did you try manually tuning in Belmont's main muxes "after" having carried out a reset?

Belmont using: Mux Ch's22 - Ch25 - Ch28(HD) -Ch30 - Ch53 - Ch60.

These being tuned in one at a time, storing what's received, then repeating the manual tune on the next multiplex.

Robert: Does the DVD recorder referred to not have Freeview built in? Maybe you could mention what type (model) it is along with similar info regarding the TV, as this would enable their specs to be checked to assess what's possible.

Andy A: Muxes is just really short for Multiplexes, the name used when referring to digital transmitters and the channels used by them. (Multiplex channels)

What I mean is to scrub everything stored by carrying out a factory re-set, then go into the installation menu / tuning / manual tuning / and a box will appear for you to enter the channel number, when you have done this with reference to the numbers provided, e.g: Ch22 (BBC), under where you have entered the number it will say "scan" or "search", just press that and it will scan picking up everything on that particular channel, once done you will see "store", so just press it.

You then repeat the process using each number in turn.

Precise instructions cannot easily be given, as the menu is not the same on different brands of equipment.

Andy A: Just to add, that the aerial should be pointing at approx 148 degrees for Belmont, use any Satellite dishes seen around as roughly facing 180 degrees

Bernard: HD ready generally means exactly that, insomuch that the TV is capable of displaying an HD picture, however this is not necessarily from its own tuner but from external sources, i.e: an external HD Freeview or Freesat box.

As you haven't mentioned the model involved I cant check, but go into the TV's user manual / specifications and look whats mentioned about the tuner, if you see DVB-T then it cannot pick up an HD signal as it requires a DVB-T2 spec for that.

The other point being that the tuner will just ignore an HD signal during its scanning process, usually indicating "no signal".

Chris: Basically yes, as they are both Freeview devices, and although you might get away with "daisy chaining" the aerial through one box and into the other, I always recommend that a two way powered splitter is used to guarantee that each device receives exactly the same level of signal, the aerial going into the splitters common input and one output going to the BT box and the other to the Freeview HD box.

If the TV is Freeview as well, then use a powered splitter with more outputs.

Cant comment on TV connections, as you haven't mentioned what model of set is involved.

Chris: Regarding the splitter, the "Y" type you refer to is perfectly OK if a person resides in an area of high signal strength, as other than that type of situation I don't advocate their use as anything that reduces signal strength isn't really desirable, with me being unable to assess what's liable to apply in your area as your location is not known.

The powered type I mentioned is always better purely because it isolates both pieces of equipment from each other as well as supplying exactly the same signal level to each device, and although they are advertised as being boosters, in real terms they are not much more than no-loss splitters with the minimal of gain.

As far as suppliers is concerned, there are numerous sources seen on places such as e-bay, the one on the link below (4 way) known to be very reliable, as a friend of mine has had one of these running 24 / 7 for just over two years now with the minimum of heat being felt from its casing.

Argos also has a two way one made by Philex, item number: 534-6147 @ £13.99, although you may not require any at all "if" you reside in a high signal strength area, as even "daisy chaining" the aerial might prove to be perfectly satisfactory in that type of situation.

By the way, your BT vision box will couple to your TV via the scart connections on both, but if you have a Freeview HD box then use an HDMI connection between both devices.

Patrick: I would be inclined to try using "Reset method 3" at the top of the page, but remember to hold the back up button "on the box" (not remote) down whilst you are powering up the box, and keep holding it until you get the "Upgrading system software" message on the screen, only then releasing it.

Briantist: Re: your reply to ben. I have just carried out a check on ITV1 (Anglia West) and still cannot receive it without the viewing card being inserted, I also carried out a second test by killing the power supply to the box, then after a 30sec or so gap powered it up again, letting it go through the usual setting up "searching for listings" procedure, the result being exactly the same as it still doesn't work without the card.

Although you are obviously quite correct regarding 5*, which I was totally unaware of it no longer required the card, but I wonder now many other ITV regions still do? including of course my own. (Anglia West)

As your finger is usually on the proverbial pulse about these things, I wondered if you have any updates on the situation?
