DAVE: If you are receiving your signal from Crystal Palace then you only have a short time to wait until it switches over to high powered operation in early April (BBC on 4th & 18th for remaining muxes) when its almost guaranteed that your reception will receive a massive boost to the extent that you may then have to fit an attenuator in line with your aerial to avoid the effects of overloading on your sets tuner.

Your present problem is likely being caused by the current wave of high pressure across the country and which is causing problems with reception in all sorts of areas, needless to say no cure to this is really possible except to wait until the present situation reverts to normal.

David Parker: Software updates can start on one morning and end at about the same time on the next or even longer, so there is no need to keep a box switched on during the night provided a weekly check is made to ensure that an update hasn't been scheduled to take place at some point during the week, as if it has then you can choose your own time that's suitable to carry out a manual software up date during the time slot indicated.

Unfortunately I cant give the link from what I am presently replying on, but its the DRG's download schedule list which you can access from Google.

If you are using a device like Humax then its plain sailing as the brand "Humax" is listed, but the snag that exists if not using something like a Humax but possibly a Vestel chassis device like Hitachi, Sharp, Digiholme, Wharfedale, Bush and a multitude of other well known brand names, is that the list generally indicates Vestel followed by a chassis number version, and as such a non technical person is not likely to know what version of the chassis is applicable to their brand name.

I will send the link early on tomorrow morning when I am back on my own PC.

John McCann: If your problem has only started occurred during the last two weeks or so then do not do anything, as numerous people are suffering from the effects of a wave of high pressure that is affecting reception across a large part of the country, and which is causing distant transmitters to be received which are clashing with local channels.

Needless to say its really a case of waiting until the situation reverts to normal, as its something that has always happened at times although only having caused poor picture quality when affecting analogue with wavy lines or patterns appearing on the screen, whereas on digital it can block reception or stages between.

David Parker: I know exactly what you mean regarding the lost hour, as it totally upsets my own routine, anyway as promised this is the link that I was unable to include last night.

Eddie McKendrick: Regarding you stating that you have never been able to get the HD mux from your feed, are you sure that its not simply because you have an "HD Ready" TV not equipped with a DVB-T2 tuner? the key part being "2".

If you have the manual for your TV have a look at the specifications section in the rear and in particular the specifications of the tuner, and if you see DVB-T and not T2 then thats the reason.

andrew: What you have been told is quite correct, as normal aerials (rooftop or otherwise) are for the reception of terrestrial Freeview and not satellite based Freesat.

G73: Based on what you have reported regarding your location in relation to the transmitters does give rise to suspicion that an excessively strong signal could be affecting the tuner which is resulting in an element of instability to occur in same, something which can cause odd problems. however I would like you to try a test by disconnecting the splitter from the aerial and connecting the lead feeding the problem box directly into the aerials down-lead and checking the results of this action, as should the problem get worse by doing that then the signal is too strong, so if you have access to a set top aerial plug that into the box concerned and check the results.

This said taking it that the splitter referred to isn't a powered version? as if it is then by-pass it.

The other point I would like to know the result of is whether or not whilst on Ch53 the signal "quality" is observed as continually jumping up and down when observed over a few minutes on the boxes signal strength / quality indicator, that is "if" the box can display the quality separately from the strength and many types combine them, not the best for accuracy!

I realise that you have said the problem has spanned over two separate devices, but have you tried the test of completely re-setting the box to guarantee that everything stored has been deleted, then this action being followed by carrying out a re-tune? I suggest this just in case some glitch has occurred during a previous re-tune and has corrupted the data stored.

Mike: That type of box works exactly in exactly the same way as any other set top box insomuch that you simply use a scart lead to couple the GD11 boxes AV2 scart socket (which might be blue coloured) into your VCR's AV1, making sure that for recording on the VCR you select AV1 as the input or it will try to record from its own internal tuner.

Likewise on playback as soon as you press "play" the video should pass through the GD11 and into the TV.

Eddie: If its a TV with an inbuilt tuner then it does suggest a possible internal fault occurring, however if its coupled to a set top box then check that the scart linking both is fully seated and hasnt came slightly out.
