Kt: Please amend the info previously given to the settings below, as the frequency etc has been changed since the info was first published.

The new details given below has been taken from a Freesat TV whilst on channel 5 and tested out on my own Sky box after having been stored in the "other channels" menu, the info providing giving access to Channel 5 / 5 USA / 5* / 5*+1, and by the way were also tested as being OK whilst the card was removed from the box.

Press SERVICES on your remote control
Select (4) SYSTEM SET UP
Select (4) ADD CHANNELS
FREQUENCY : punch in 10.964
POLARISATION - H
SYMBOL RATE - 22.0
FEC - 5/6
then select FIND CHANNELS

When the new channels are found, highlight FIVE (or more) by pressing the Yellow button then press "select" to continue.

To watch channel 5 etc select SERVICES, then OTHER CHANNELS then select the channel required.

Mark Fletcher / Dave Lindsay: Just tested out DUK's post code reception checker and pleased to be able to say that the problem appears to have been rectified.

Dave Lindsay / Mark Fletcher: Yes thanks, and long may it continue to do so, as it's an essential aid into providing assistance to anyone with problems of a reception nature, as without it anyone providing assistance is (up to a point anyway!) just about as much in the dark as the person seeking help, and in many cases with that even applying when the person seeking assistance has provided non-post code info on their location.

Peter Conochie: The problem is caused by when an auto tune was carried out the TV has tuned to the local (very!) Horndean transmitter and which is a PSB only station that does not transmit ITV3, whereas the Rowridge transmitter (@ 24 miles) does.

The TV will require to be "manually" tuned in to receive the programme required "if" she genuinely received it in a regular basis before, so go into the tuning menu - manual tune and enter Ch25 (ITV3 etc) and press scan, storing the results.

If this works you may as well do similar with the remaining two muxes, these being Ch22 / Ch28.

By the way the channels picked up and stored by doing this will simply add themselves to the programme guide, so that the BBC @ ITV will be from Horndean but ITV3 etc will be from the Rowridge transmitter.

This being said though without knowledge of the upgrade carried out, and whether the new aerial is facing towards Horndean or Rowridge? as there are only 10 degrees of a difference between the two stations, and if it does face towards Rowridge then the aerial should really be vertically mounted (as was also required for Horndean) the problem being that the aerial installers might have mounted the aerial horizontally and which wont provide such a good signal, as its Rowridges vertical signal that radiates the commercial programmes on high power.

Dave Lindsay: Well the reason that I didnt think it necessary to mention it was because Horndean would only be picked up in the first place if the signal levels received from Rowrige were that low that they weren't at a storable level anyway, which of course is very possible by the fact of Horndean having been received on an auto-tune.

I also feel that the area in question is possibly known to be a bit iffy as far as reception from Rowridge is concerned, or the powers that be wouldn't have considered it necessary to have a relay station located at just about half a mile away on nearly the same line of direction as Rowridge.

But though what you have mentioned is quite correct, and likewise I am not criticising this in any way.

Detailed comparison Freeview/Sky

Vin Roberts: Although technology is constantly evolving you have nothing to worry about if thinking about purchasing one of these Humax Freesat PVR devices, as a great deal of assumptions and general scaremongering always goes on in these forums basically from people with "bees in their bonnets" about one thing or another.

As far as a redundant+ Sky box is concerned, it can always be used as a standard Sky box as it in effect reverts to just that without a subscription being in force, although "if" you wanted to use it in another room then it would require its own feed (single) from the dish, and so if your LNB is only of the two outlet port type then the LNB would require to be changed to a Quad block and this would leave one outlet spare in case of emergencies like for instance one of the outlets failing, as all outputs are independent of each other and so the "F" connector would only require to be swapped over to the spare port.

Of course that is only if its a twin output block in the first place, as many Sky engineers fitted quad blocks as standard as the price difference is minimal between the two types. (complete LNB kit obtainable for around £10.00 or so from a number of e-bay outlets)

Have a look up at where the coax cables enter the LNB, as you "might" see two outlet ports unused.

melanie: Satellite reception does not suffer from the multitude of problems that can affect Freeview reception and a "no signal" warning on a Sky or Freesat box can only be caused by a very limited number of reasons, the difficulty being that only about two of them can be checked by the viewer unless they are technically inclined.

Being unaware as to what Sky has requested you check, but press "services - 4 - 6" and look if anything is being indicated on the strength / quality level bars, and if anything is seen then it "has" to be at a minimum level of around 60% or so to produce a picture, as anything under this level suggests that the dish is slightly out of alignment.

However if nothing is seen then the dish could be well out of alignment, or that a problem exists with the coax from the dish or the "F" connectors used on either end of, especially at the dish end as far as water having possibly entered the connector as that will kill the signal.

Anyway, try the signal level check first then dependant on results further info appropriate to what has been found can then be given.

You could maybe also mention if you have a standard Sky box or a Sky+ / Sky+HD type, and if the latter the model number of.

rob: You cannot unless you have a Sky subscription, as Sky retains permanent control of the access codes necessary to enable the recording / playback side of the box to operate.

dorothy twentyman: Plus to that requested by Mark Fletcher, are you referring to Freeview via a normal aerial, or is it Sky or Freesat via a dish?

lindsay: Disconnect the box from the mains supply again for about 30 secs or so before reconnecting it and letting it go through its usual "searching for listings" procedure. If this still doesn't work then carry out the following check / 1:- Press Sky followed by Services. 2:- Highlight System Setup (4) and press select. 3:- Press 0 then 1 then select. 4:- Press select again to access the LNB setup screen. 5:- Press the red button to re-set the default settings. 6:- Using the up/down arrows, highlight Save New Settings and press select. 7:- Press select to confirm that the settings have been reset. By the way the correct settings for the LNB are / Low frequency - 9.75 High Frequency - 10.60 The LNB power supply should always be set to on. The 22KHz Command should always be set to on.
