Below are all of jb38's postings, with the most recent are at the bottom of the page.Robert Fairbrother: You have to look at it from the other point of view, insomuch that the transmitter concerned is not always necessarily actually off line as such, but has only been reduced in power to the extent that the signal received by your TV or box has dropped to just under the reception threshold for the equipment you are using.
Its really quite impossible for engineers to forecast exactly when a situation such as described will occur, as dependant on what task is being carried out it might involve temporarily working close to either a high voltage or radiation source whereby a reduction in power for a few minutes might prove to be necessary in the interests of safety.

richard harrison: "If" you are meaning that you tried connecting the Freeview PVR onto the same aerial system as used by the Panasonic and this was the result, then that suggests that the signal level being received is not really strong enough albeit its OK for the Panasonic, as the tuners used on Panasonic TV's are about the best available insomuch that they can produce a reasonably stable picture on a weak signal where most other devices (excluding Humax boxes) wont.
Without knowing the model of Panasonic in question you should carry out a signal condition check, noting the signal strength / quality (particularly this) indications seen, as you might require to use a two way powered splitter to feed both devices.

P. Kieran Ward: Well provided that its a straight cable run with nothing in between you dont really require anything else more sophisticated than what you already have to check the cable, as a continuity "and" a short circuit test can be carried out at the same time on the cable (unconnected) by setting your test meter on low ohms (up to 1k) and connecting it across the coax plug which of course should not read anything, then whilst leaving it still connected go to the other end of the cable and short out the coax plug, then returning to the meter end and making sure that continuity is now indicated on the loop circuit you have just created by shorting out the remotely positioned coax plug.
Should this prove as being OK then the second test is to use one of your receivers with a manual tune facility and that you know works OK on the channels referred to when connected into one of the other positions, then whilst still at one of those positions go into its tuning menu / manual tune and enter Ch39 but do "not" press search or scan, as on most equipment the strength the signal is being received at will immediately be indicated as soon as the channel number is entered, make a note of whatever it is then change Ch39 to Ch52 and also note its level.
Once completed move the device you are using to the end of your extension cable and then carry out exactly the same test there and see what results you get, because should any signal be present irrespective of strength it will still be indicated, the reason being that this type of test measures the actual signal pre the receivers reception threshold cut off circuitry as this only comes into play once search has been pressed, this being why some might see a signal being indicated on entering the channel number and yet nothing is found on a search.

Katherine: You do not require a card in "any" Sky box to be able to view non dedicated to Sky channels, and so your new acquisition is either defective or it requires resetting, or possibly that your dish has been accidentally moved (blown or knocked by a ball) slightly out of alignment.
As far as the box is concerned try the following procedure.
1:- Press Sky followed by Services.
2:- Highlight System Setup (4) and press select.
3:- Press: " 0 -1 - Select " and the installers menu will appear with LNB
set up screen being highlighted.
4:- Press select again to access the LNB setup screen.
5:- Press the red button to re-set the block to the default settings. (may
already be on them but still press Reset)
6:- Scroll down and press on "Save New Settings"
7:- Press select to confirm that the settings have been reset.
The correct LNB Set Up values should read:
1:- LNB Type: Standard
2:- Low Band frequency: 9.75
3:- High Band LO Frequency: 10.60
4:- LNB Power Supply: ON
5:- 22 KHz Command: ON
The correct Default Transponder values should read:
1:- Frequency: 11.778
2:- Polarisation: V
3:- Symbol Rate (Mbaud): 27.5
4:- FEC: 2/3

Kevin: Just by any chance in case you havent found out by now, but a card is not required at all in a Sky box except for the purpose of providing the correct local news service for your area.
I did also note that you referred to a Sky+ box, please be aware that you only require one input for a Sky+ box if you are not a subscriber, this is because the recording and playback side of it will have been disabled by Sky when the contract was cancelled and there is no way of over-riding this.

mark phillipps: Crystal Palace @ 27 miles away is shown as being your only option for reception, and what your installer has said is quite correct insomuch that with digital reception its a total myth that these large pieces of metal work somehow improve reception, as in most cases something like a Log 40 used in conjunction with a 20db variable booster (shown in link) will give far superior results as the gain can be varied to suit the conditions, although a 15db loft mounted booster is "slightly" superior in the technical sense by being located closer to the aerial, as amplifying the signal before it comes down the coax can result in less interference being picked up by the coax.

Mat Iles: Plus to add to Michaels request for further info, as your query is one involving reception then its essential that info regarding your location be provided, this in the form of a post code or one from nearby, as knowledge of this will then enable access to the reception predictor as well as info on the transmitter covering your location.

Kieran Ward: I did mean to finalise the reply I made earlier on this morning (08.18am) by stating, that needless to say should it be found on the "before and after" extension cable signal comparison check that there is quite a difference in levels between the two positions, then this could be rectified by the addition of a booster of about 6db or so preferably (but not essentially) preceding the cable run.

Kieran Ward: Although I might well be misinterpreting what you have said, but I am curious with regards to when you refer to being able to receive all of the channels mentioned perfectly OK on the other four positions but "not" on the equipment used at the end of the run, have you tried out these two devices when connected into any of the other four positions?
