Jo Dee: Thanks for the update on the mux channel test that you carried out, and which as you have mentioned confirming that your Freeview service is indeed from the Malvern transmitters, however as far as the intermittent problems with reception is concerned, judging by what you have previously reported with regards to having observed that the main issue is one of fluctuating quality to the extent of it being non existent at times, then although I feel that the problem might well be outwith your control you really do have to be able to completely eliminate any possibility of the problem being caused by a fault within your own installation, such as for example a bad (corroded) connection where the coax is terminated on the aerial, as this sort of problem can give symptoms exactly as you have described no matter what the weather.

Of course needless to say, that the only way of verifying as to whether or not the aforementioned possibility applies is by making a local enquiry with any neighbour that you might be on friendly terms with, because other than by taking that action its impossible to know.

Nick: Possibly not, but as I previously mentioned it is something that is not exactly uncommon if the intensity of the buzz varies with the content of the signal but somewhat subsides if the TV's contrast is reduced, because if it doesnt then the problem can be caused by defective earth continuity between both devices (try another scart lead) or possibly a dry joint on the ground connection from the rear of the boxes scart socket to PCB (or even on the PCB) as in that case the buzz heard "is" the video signal and not a representation of it as applies in the case of a poorly designed power supply.

Kathleen Barry: If by saying that you have tried all points here, does that include the signal checking procedure mentioned on the posting above?

If though it does then you have to provide more information such as the type of Sky box you are referring to i.e: Standard, Sky+ or Sky+ HD, plus whether or not the dish is yours or possibly a communal type.

That said on the assumption that you are referring to a Sky box?

rick: Only Freesat recorders require twin inputs as these devices have two tuners, Freesat TV's only require one input because recording isn't involved.

By the way Satellite cables cannot be split as control voltages are sent along the cable from the box to the dish for both band and polarity switching purposes.

Jo Dee: Yes, please do! as its really important that you find this out before making decisions with regards to further actions that may be taken, as should it subsequently transpire that others are indeed experiencing similar problems to yourself then that effectively makes the situation one of being outwith your control.

Needless to say, I would advise to refrain from making any purchases for the time being.

Diagnostics - old version

Louise: As nothing has been reported as yet with regards to any possible fault conditions being in existence at the Emley Moor transmitter nor are there any engineering works taking place either, then what you are experiencing could simply be down to the effects of seasonal changes in atmospherics affecting reception. You should try to refrain from carrying out a rescan when a channel "appears" to have been lost as it will still be stored in the tuner, but though is sitting at a level that's just under the reception threshold for your receiver hence nothing is seen, and with a retune doing nothing more than wiping out anything that's already stored in the tuners memory. If your TV or box has manual tuning then try tuning the missing channels in one at a time, storing the results of every scan. Emley Moors channels being / PSB1(Ch47) - PSB2(Ch44) - PSB3(Ch41 HD) - COM4(Ch51) - COM5(Ch52) - COM6(Ch48)

Loft aerials | Installing

pamela dudley: You problem is possibly being caused by the signal level received being on the weak side and not really high enough above your TV minimum cut off level.

However its not really possible for anyone to offer advice without having knowledge of either your post code or one from somewhere nearby e.g: a shop, this being used to access info on the station involved.

skeggyhornet: If a time factor of an exact nature is genuinely involved with this problem and its not just the case that the timing of the interference is purely coincidental, then as its already been verified that the problem seems to be confined to the property itself by the fact of the neighbours have not reported anything amiss, then one of the simplest tests for detecting interference from within a property in cases where something associated with the mains supply is suspected as being the cause is by using a small portable radio of the type that is capable of LW reception.

You simply tune the radio to anywhere close to BBC radio 4 LW (but not actually on it) then turn up the volume control until background noise is heard, you then place the radio in a position close to the electrical wiring used by central heating system, because if the source of the interference is associated with anything connected with the central heating system then the interference will be revealed by loud bursts of audio on the radio, the exact problem area being found by manually moving the radio around near to the boiler or electric water valves associated with, such as externally positioned diverter valves etc.

An FM radio tuned so as NOT to be on a station can also be used for this test, any interference showing up as intermittent bursts of noise over the normal background hiss of the radio, provided that its not the type with an auto-mute.

By the way, if nothing is detected then try placing the radio somewhere thats close to mains input supply to the property, because should there be any interference on the incoming power supply then it will show up on the radio.

Showcase TV
Thursday 21 March 2013 12:20PM

PM fan: You could if you wish try using another post code as the post code is only to enable you to have the correct news services for the area that you reside in, but I would advise you to try carrying out a fresh rescan just in case some glitch occurred during the initial one as showcase on Freesat is on 400.

Should it subsequently be found that the problem is still evident then check what the signal strength and quality is indicated as being, as both should be around 50%+ minimum although preferably higher and with the quality not being under the strength, because if it is then the dish is slightly out of alignment.

Mr J M Carter: This indicates that you are not receiving mux channel 39 from the Humshaugh transmitter and which is used by BBC1/2 on SD, however nothing is seen as having been reported as yet with regards to any faults being in existence nor are any engineering works taking place, and so you should try going into your TV's tuning menu / manual tune and entering Ch39 but do NOT press scan or search, because if the signal is still there albeit at a low level it will still be indicated, make a note of the level and then change the channel previously entered to Ch42 (ITV1) then compare its level to that of the previous, giving an update on results.

By the way provided you have NOT carried out a rescan then you can simply select BBC1 and carry out a signal check on a blank screen thereby bypassing the aforementioned procedure.
