r. bedford: Do you have the operating manual for your TV? because if not I will attempt to paste in the "plug and play" section as on having had a look through same, it is as was expected with any Samsung manual, horrendous!!

r. bedford: If you now have the manual stored? then when going through the "plug and play" menu the important section that determines whether DTV or analogue is scanned starts from paragraph 4.

4. Press the ENTER button then select the appropriate country by pressing the or button. Press the ENTER button to confirm your choice.

5. Press the or button to select Air or Cable, then press the ENTER button.

Air: Air antenna signal - Cable: Cable antenna signal.

6. Press the or button to select the channel source to memorize. (Digital or Analogue) Press the ENTER button to select Start.

r. bedford: Well, as you will probably remember I did suggest in my 09.24pm posting yesterday (12th) that what you reported is inclined to indicate the signal is too low for the TV to lock onto, and of course this somewhat being backed up by what you have now reported, but though its a case of whether or not the problem is confined to your flat.

However, with regards to the TV you have borrowed, it would be interesting to know what the signal level would be if this same TV was tried out on a neighbours aerial outlet socket, or at least anyone within the the same complex as yourself as this would take the iffy element out of the equation.

Have you verified that the jumper lead connecting the TV to the aerial socket is OK?

r. bedford: If you open the undermentioned link you will no doubt see that its unlikely that your TV would latch onto one of the other stations with the possible exception of Crystal Palace's PSB's, as Guildford, Rowridge and Hannington are all under the banner of "poor".

In the absence of being able to try the loan TV out on another aerial point within the complex and by you having verified that the jumper lead is OK, then the situation has to be looked at from the possibility that the communal feed into your flat is defective, although I have to say that I am a bit suspicious as to the reliability of the feedback you received from some of the other residents in the block.

Now that you are aware of the procedures to use you could try using your TV's "manual tune" facility on Crystal Palaces BBC mux on channel 23, and if you do decide to try it then after you enter 23 (490.0Mhz) into the box hesitate before pressing search, as although it might not work on a Samsung, but in most equipment the signal strength / quality of the channel entered will appear in the signal bar, if it doesn't then press search. (or possibly enter)

r. bedford: Yes, I thought that would be the case, its just a pity that you are unable to try the loan TV on another aerial point within the complex, as the results of would instantly indicate the source of your problem.

And by the way, re: latter comment made your earlier 08.30pm posting, you are not by any means wasting anyone's time as we are all contributing to the site on a voluntary basis and as such are pleased to be able to help by passing on our knowledge.

r. bedford: If the TV does not respond to pressing this button then that indicates a definite fault in either the remote control (check / replace batteries) or the TV, because pressing that button should offer the choice of either ATV or DTV irrespective of any other settings that may have been made.

Tony Lawson: As nothing has been reported as far as any faults being in existence with Rowridge's BBC mux, have you as yet checked with any of your neighbours to find out if the problem referred to is also being experienced by others or is simply confined to your own installation?

However, should it subsequently be found that your neighbour is not experiencing any difficulties with BBC reception then the question would be if your aerial is mounted horizontally or vertically? because if the former then you might benefit from it being swivelled around to the vertical position as in some instances this has been found to help in situations such as yours, (only with Rowridge) although any difference that is noticed should be far greater on the commercial channels (although not the subject of your query) as Rowridge transmits at maximum power across all muxes on this polarity, i.e.: 200kw V / 50Kw H.

Tony Lawson: Although that said still applies as far as Ch28 is concerned, but ignore my reference to Rowridges BBC mux.

Trying to do things at the same time!
