Tina: That version of the Sky HD box you have seems to be one of the latest Amstrad units (DRX895?) in which Sky in their infinite wisdom have done away with one of the scart sockets, this having caused great inconvenience to many!

You mention that you have a TV and also a combi DVD/VCR recorder, maybe you could give the brand & model number of this unit, also whether or not your TV is fitted with two scart sockets? finally, maybe you could also indicate if its an HD TV? (that is with an HDMI socket)

keith: I realise you have already re-scanned etc, but have you carried out a factory re-set before carrying out a further re-scanning operation? (factory reset called default condition on some sets)

Tina: Thanks for the update. Well what to do is purchase an HDMI lead and use that to connect your Sky box to the TV, as this will now allow the Sky boxes single scart socket to be used exclusively for recording purposes on your DVD/ VCR combi's ext2 or AV2 input scart socket.

You then use another scart lead to connect the combi's AV1 socket into same on the TV.

This would allow the TV to have a spare scart input socket that you could possibly use for something else at any time, such as a separate DVD player for playing discs rather than through the combi.

Note: You "might" have to use the A/V button on your TV's remote control to switch over to the DVD combi should it not automatically switch the TV over when you turn the combi on.

By the way do NOT pay any more than about £7.00 or so for an HDMI lead, as these fancy high priced versions sold by some are not one iota better than types sold by Lidl or Aldi.

keith: Thanks for the update and pleased to hear all is OK now. Yes, its always best to start afresh by getting rid of any stored data that may have got corrupted during a previous procedure, because as you say it can be a bit mystifying to have programme channels missing when its known that they are all on the same multiplex.

Tina: Yes, you could maybe give an update once tested out. I did mean to add that when you want to record anything from the Sky box (excluding certain Sky films which may be copy protected) make sure that when you power up the DVD/VCR combi you switch the input to AV2 by pressing the "INPUT SEL" button. Tony Maggs: Thetford appears to be a Freeview "Light" PSB channels only relay and with this situation not forecast to change, however as its located at 346 degrees from you at least you are on the correct side of it once it starts transmission on November 9th on BBC only, (all three Mux's on the 23rd) as the radiation pattern shows the signal as being directed Southerly in a squashed (top and bottom) heart shape.

However, Tacolneston switchover stage two also occurs on November 23rd, and with its reception being predicted as good on all its six multiplexes at your location, that is unless any local obstructions exist in your area that's liable to block the signal, as predictors cannot really cater for that type of possibility.

You are even forecast as being able to receive it at present, although not really of the same standard as come the 23rd of November, so there really isn't anything to stop you trying out a loft aerial, one very suitable type being seen on the link and which I can personally recommend as I use two of them, and although they have a built in booster its simplicity to by-pass it should a signal eventually be too strong.

I wouldn't normally suggest such as Screwfix for aerials, but this is one occasion where they are selling a quality item at considerably less than Argos, who charge £52.00 for the same thing.

Tina: Press "menu" on your TV's remote and on the choice box that appears select "input source" then select AV1 and that switches the TV's input onto that scart socket.

If you find that you still cannot play a DVD try and play a video tape on the combi, but do not alter the TV's settings. If the video tape plays OK, then that suggests a fault in the DVD player side of the unit, but if a tape doesn't play either make sure you have the combi's AV1 scart socket to the TV's AV1 scart input.

Although this shouldnt really make any difference, but place the Sky box in standby whilst you are trying the DVD, but these are the correct connections for what you are using.

Tina: Well in that case it strongly suggests the DVD side of the unit is faulty, which of course is the side of combi's that usually develops a fault, DVD equipment being notorious for problems of one sort or another, the main thing is though that your connections are OK.

I did wonder when you had mentioned in your original posting that the DVD made a terrible noise when you tried to use it, insomuch if the noise you were meaning was mechanical, or that it was through the speakers? not that it really makes that much of a difference though whichever it was, as it indicates a fault.

I assume that this problem occurs with more than one disc being tried? as if it does then unfortunately the DVD drive is defective.

Lorraine: If you do indeed mean Freeview and not Freesat then the answer is no, as you are comparing a Satellite system that uses a dish to a Freeview system that uses a normal aerial, which of course you will require for satisfactory Freeview reception.

This being said though taking it that you do mean "Sky" multiroom, and not that you are just referring to feeding the Sky boxes RF2 output to analogue capable TV's in other rooms.

Tina: I will have a check and get back to you, as all you would require is a low cost DVD recorder, because if the VCR side of the combi still plays OK, then all you would need to do is rather than at present having its AV1 connected to the TV, it would then go to the input of another DVD (only) recorder, then the 2nd DVD recorders AV1 output would go to the TV.
