shell: On looking over your postings it would appear that its the two high powered multiplexes you are having problems with, this immediately giving rise to the suspicion that its an over powerful signal that is possibly causing your problem and not the reverse, as you are located at only 11 miles away from Sandy.
Just purely for a test, if you have access to a set top aerial try carrying out a rescan using that, if this enables you to get BBC1 etc but its of a poor quality it doesn't really matter, as the test is just to find out if it comes in at all, as if it does then you require an attenuator in line with your TV's aerial socket.

Ben: Having a considerable knowledge the Newark area I can say that the signal from Waltham is generally very good, and especially to the South of the town which is the direction the signal comes from, and in your own case not far off from being due South. Have you carried out a signal test to make sure that it is actually Waltham you are receiving from? and not Sutton Coldfield or Belmont?
You should carry out a signal check whilst on Sky news making a note on the Mux channel that's shown along with the signal strength details etc, if the signal is from Waltham Mux Ch56 will be seen, whereas if from Sutton Coldfield its Mux Ch45 / and finally if Belmont its Mux Ch53.
If you do find an error, then manually tuning in the Mux channels required is the only way to get over the problem, something quite a number of people in the Newark areas find that they have to do.

Mat: No two TV or boxes have exactly the same sensitivity, the ironical aspect being that if a person resides in an area where the signal is a bit "over the top" strength wise, its always the devices with the best tuners that are first to suffer from overloading and likewise fail to operate.
Coventry should (in theory) get blasted with the signal from Sutton Coldfield, and the simplest way to check if this is applying is to try a test using a set top aerial, or maybe even a short length of wire (600mm or so) into the middle of the aerial socket. (crude but works in this type of situation!)
It should also be noted, that a re-tune will be required "if" nothing had been received since a previous scan, as the device might not have stored the channel.
Needless to say, if you have any type of booster fitted it should be removed.

Jen5: Basically a Freeview TV is all that's required plus a suitable aerial, or the one presently used turned around to face the Weardale transmitter, unless that is you are already using it for your analogue reception, your area being a bit iffy as far as reception is concerned.
As you are having to wait until next September 26th for reception of only the BBC / ITV / HD service as Weardale will only be a PSB station, why don't you consider Freesat? (if allowed a dish) because as well as it being ultra reliable for reception you would have the full compliment of programmes straight away.
Some TV's have Freesat built in, or you could use a normal TV coupled to a Freesat box. (even an old analogue TV so long as it has a scart socket)

Jen5: just to add, provided your reason for not having a TV is NOT because there is no signal at your location, as this is unlikely to change any.

mark.farrant: Yes! CMT was one of my favourite channels, and which I still have many VCR recordings I made from the analogue Satellite box, although still haven't got around to transferring them onto disc yet!
I contacted CMT shortly after they closed down, them promptly replying (by letter) along with an envelope containing an assortment of their CMT stickers, and stating that they fully intended to return in the near future, however I later found out that they owed Sky quite a few hundred thousand pounds in back fees, hence the reason for their rapid departure.

Sue: If you have a Freeview TV that was working perfectly OK before the changeover but it hasn't since, (assuming of course that you did carry out a re-tune) then it could suggest that you are receiving a signal that's too powerful and which is blocking your TV's tuner, you haven't given your location (post code) or that could possibly have been verified, or not as the case may be.
If you have a set top aerial around try that, scanning after connecting same, or even carry out a test by connecting a short piece of wire (about 2 or 3 feet) into the middle of the aerial socket, and as before scanning after connecting.
Should this result in a picture then you require to purchase an attenuator to place in line with the TV's aerial socket.
