Claire: The difference in picture quality between Freesat and Freeview is in most cases negligible, and so something must be wrong with the method used to connect the Freesat box to the TV.

The normal method of connecting a Freesat box to a TV is simply by using a scart lead from the boxes AV1 scart output socket into the TV's AV1 input socket, because when the Freesat box is taken out of standby it will cause the TV to switch over to it thereby cutting out the Freeview picture.

The point being, do you have it connected this way?

Maybe you could give the model number of the Freesat box and also the TV.

Ted Capon: Unfortunately as North Norfolk is a relatively large area and with a few iffy places for reception, your question regarding the reception of ITV4 cannot be assessed properly without knowledge of your particular location, this in the form of a post code or at least one from nearby, a shop etc!

Pete Eyre: Engineering work of an on-going nature has been taking place at Waltham over the last few weeks and with this being the reason for your complaint, unfortunately no estimates have as yet been given for the completion of the work.

Sal: As you are using a communal aerial system then the obvious question would be, have you checked with anyone else in the block for purposes of finding out if the problem is also affecting them?

By the way, "if" the problem is with the communal system then because you have already carried out a retune you will require to keep trying more retunes before you will know if the situation has been rectified, this being the reason why retuning should never be carried out on a Freeview box if the screen is blank, as all thats achieved is to wipe out everything already stored.

If the situation has not been rectified as yet, maybe you could indicate the model number of the TV in question.

chris: When you retuned the box did you precede this by carrying out the "Set defaults" (Restore to Default Settings) procedure?

Ian Stewart: Just a small addition to my already lengthy posting.

Although I am doubtful is this would be a factor with your particular problem, but dependant on the mains power supply arrangements you use to power the distribution amplifier if its at all possible you should verify that the unit is still 100% operational, and with this being done by carrying out a signal strength check on any channel, then whilst observing (or having noted) the signal level switch off the mains supply to the distribution amplifier, because if its working OK the signal level will be seen to drop off, if it doesn't then the device is defective.

By the way, if the device has a red (or maybe green) LED in the casing, then do not assume that by it being lit that the amplifier must be working, as the LED is not powered from the amp supply.

I only mention this because if a person is receiving a reasonably high level of signal via a booster and the booster is switched off, its not always the case that the signal will completely vanish albeit that the signal from the lesser powered muxes will, and so you have to eliminate the possibility of the distribution amp being faulty from the equation.

Chris: As this site gives advice on both Satellite as well as Freeview anyone posting a question has to state which mode they are referring to, your particular posting being under the Sky box heading.

KR: Just to clarify on a point, when you refer to a 100% signal are you meaning the strength or the quality? or does the devices used only offer a single combined indicator bar? the reason I ask is because when Dave Lindsay had referred to potential problems being cause by excessive signal strength it is actual "signal" that's being referred to and not the quality.

I have to say though, that I do have doubts about you actually suffering from this type of problem when you are located at 21 miles from the transmitter and use a loft aerial, and although it does no harm to try a test using an attenuator but if you can easily access the distribution amplifier (if in loft) then you should try a test on the problematic set by taking the set in questions feed out of the aerial amplifier and temporarily connecting it directly onto the aerial.

joe: Your reception possibilities cannot be checked on without a post code (or one from nearby) being given, but if using the Sudbury transmitter then RT(85) is on mux Ch56, Sky news(82) being on mux Ch60, and so you should manually tune in each of these two muxes.

By the way ITV4(24)is on the same mux as RT, and if by any chance you are receiving it but not RT then carry out a complete reset on whatever you are using to scrub everything already stored, then follow this by carrying out a normal auto-tune.

eag: If I am understanding you correctly it appears that you are using one of the final CRT TV's to be made with built in Freeview, this being the case could you please give an update on the model number involved to enable me to check the spec on it.

However in general terms to make the signal check referred to, select BBC1 (or any programme) and whilst the picture is on the screen go into the "check signal strength" menu, it being impossible to give the exact sequence of operations to obtain this as every set is different, this why I requested the model number of the TV.

By the way ignore "Highland" popping up as its just really an indication that its not Central, and although it could well transpire that you are receiving the Angus transmitter this has to be checked on, the only method of achieving this is by checking the mux channel numbers against the two stations involved.
