Ian: Well, there are always pockets of good reception within any area that's generally considered as bad, albeit with yourself being fortunate enough to be in one of choice areas contrary to what's indicated, as the terrain indicator shows a couple of natural obstructions to the signal path from the Waltham transmitter starting from roughly just under four miles away from your location, this being the most likely reason why a number of different tests codes made around the Hinckley area when fed into DUK's predictor indicates reception from Waltham as being from variable to poor, and in one case no reception of the commercial muxes being possible.
This being the case, although I do appreciate that you prefer to view the East Midlands news services rather than the West the fact remains that "transmission wise" you are in Sutton Coldfield's coverage area, Sutton Coldfield being @ 18.6 miles whereas Waltham is 31 miles.

Arthur: As Les Nicol has already given you the main details of the latest somewhat more sophisticated Humax box there is no point in repeating anything said, these by the way ranging from £250.00 for the 500 GB drive or £300.00 for the 1TB version, but though if you are only interested in a quality standard Freesat HD recorder of the twin tuner variety which will do all that you have specified in your posting then I would advise looking at Humax's well established standard range, with myself having been using the FOXSAT HDR 320GB for over two years with faultless performance, the only minor glitch being a relatively instant fix problem with some of the remote controls supplied with them, insomuch that every month or so it would lock up, the easy fix being to take one end of the remote controls battery out, press any button, then reinsert the battery again and it springs back into life, the action of pressing any button discharging the IC in the remote control.

Jo Dee: As it appears as though its possible for you to receive from two different stations, namely Malvern @ 7.5 miles / 219 degrees or The Wrekin @ 35 miles / 337 degrees, the question is which one of the two are you receiving from? If your aerial is mounted vertically then it will be Malvern whereas with The Wrekin its horizontal, but though its a case of making sure that the aerial is receiving channels from the correct station, this can be verified by carrying out signal strength checks on BBC1 / ITV1 / ITV3, because as well as the strength / quality of the signal being seen the mux channel number associated with the programme channel will also be indicated. Mux channels used by both stations being / The Wrekin: Ch26(BBC) - Ch23(ITV1) - Ch30(HD) - Ch41(ITV3) - Ch44 - Ch47. Malvern: Ch53(BBC) - Ch57(ITV1) - Ch60(HD) - Ch50(ITV3) - Ch59 - Ch55.

Jo Dee: Managed to get Google Earth working again and a quick check indicates Malvern as being the station you are receiving from, therefore carry out the signal test as described and cross check that the mux channel numbers indicated on each of the programmes tested match with Malverns muxes as seen on the list.

frances henry: You can use any one of the two leads from the dish as both are technically identical.
Just out of interest though, what model of Freesat recorder are you referring to?

frances henry: Push in (coax plug) connectors are not used for Satellite purposes as devices used to connect to a Satellite dish always use "F" type connectors, are you sure that the box you have isnt a "Freeview" type that uses a normal aerial? as what you have said strongly suggests that it is.
This can be checked if you supply the model number.

Ann: Your friend could be picking up the signal from the Bluebell Hill transmitter located at roughly half way between Gillingham and Maidstone, it being BBC1 South East for news etc.
Not quite sure what you are meaning by "digital dish" as that is used for Sky or Freesat purposes Freeview being received via a normal aerial, and so the question would be whether or not you are using a normal aerial? or is it a communal one?

Nick: In that case you should use the manual tuning procedure on mux Ch44 (BBC1) but NOT pressing search or scan after having entered the channel number, because if the signal is actually weak it will generally be indicated as such accompanied by varying quality, whereas if the signal is over the top then its liable to indicate 100% strength but with zero quality.
At least thats whats indicated on most devices when operating in these type of situations, although not guaranteed to be applicable in every case as its dependant on the equipment being used.

m stevens: Of course what's been said is on the assumption that Beacon Hill can actually be received at your location, something which isn't guaranteed or the powers that be would not have considered it necessary to build the Newton Abbot relay so nearby.
