Richard Williams: If you are receiving from the Guildford transmitter then Freeview HD will not be available until April 18th.

Steve: Your problem can really be looked at from various angles, insomuch that although some Goodman's boxes can be troublesome interference wise it has to be said that this problem is usually only experienced when the box is being used to loop the aerial through before feeding it into a TV's aerial socket, and "not" if the TV concerned is being viewed via a scart (or any) cable between the box and it.

That said though, in cases where the TV is being viewed directly and not via a scart cable the loop through problem can in some instances be really bad unless the two aerial cables (in & out) are taken straight away from the boxes aerial sockets and not allowed to rest anywhere on the plastic casing, the underside of where the seemingly high levels of processor noise interference radiates from.

However the other angle that needs checked on is this is, as you are predicted to be able to receive signals from more that one source you should check to make sure that the Goodman's has picked up channels from the same station as the other Freeview box you were using, the way to do this being to carry out a signal check on the programme channel numbers you have the trouble with, noting the mux channel number being shown that always accompanies the strength / quality levels.

Do that on a few programmes, BBC1 / ITV1 / ITV3 / PickTV / Film 4 then put the old Freeview box back in position and carry out the aforementioned procedure on it always using the same programme test channels as previously used on the Goodman's, then once completed compare the mux channel numbers obtained from the two boxes to ensure both are the same, if not it means the two boxes are on different transmitters and which will necessitate a manual re-tune being carried out to rectify the problem.

lorna fraser: What is the model number of the digital recorder being referred to, and if possible the same info regarding the TV.

Darren Ellis: Thanks for your latest report, as I was wondering what the situation would be like with your 8000T come complete switchover.

But regarding the Humax, you shouldn't really require to do anything, as if its set on auto it should detect the technicalities involved with the mode being transmitted and correspondingly adjust itself to suit, but the fact that its not strongly suggests that there is either a fault with the tuner, and in particular the 8k chip allegedly fitted, or that's its never been activated right from the start, as the only real thing that has changed at switchover is that all muxes are now operating on the 8k mode whereas before it was only the BBC mux, this being the start of your problem.

The other point is, that you have proven that feeding a reduced level of signal into the tuner via the set top aerial hasn't helped either, so the excessive signal level theory can now be eliminated.

I cannot really see any way out of your problem except possibly by tuner replacement, although "if" the tuner is still available as a spare part the whole exercise is liable to outweigh the value of the box, so much as I am a "never say die type" of engineer I feel that the word "discard" might be appropriate to this situation.

Mike O'Sullivan: Just to add to that already said by KMJ, although its not worth altering anything at this late stage the problem you are experiencing is nearly always found in cases where the aerial has been split without using a two (or more) way powered splitter, as this is the only way of ensuring that the signal received by each device is at roughly at the same level.

This said of course assuming (maybe incorrectly!) that a powered splitter isnt used.

However as KMJ has suggested, come switchover to high powered operation your problems will most likely vanish.

ben: If the socket that you have plugged the TV into is genuinely intended for FM/DAB use then that's totally unsuitable for TV reception, as FM/DAB devices operate on far lower frequencies, especially FM.

You should carry out a signal strength check whilst on BBC to get an idea of what like your reception is, as there isn't really any reason that I can see for you not picking up Crystal Palaces main ITV transmitter on mux Ch22, Crystal Palace being located @ 10 miles away.

Another test to try is that as well as carrying out the BBC signal strength check go into the tuning menu / manual tune and enter mux Ch22, but do NOT select scan, because on most devices as soon as you enter a channel number the signal level being received on that channel (if that is!) will immediately appear, but though if whatever you see indicates about 50% or so strength / quality then select scan and see what comes up.

My reason for suggesting this check is that the signal might actually be there but just at a level the box will not respond to.

ben: Just in addition to that already said, the reason I questioned the socket you are using is that someone may just have fitted that wall plate because that was all that was available at the time, the problem there being that it "might" have a filter incorporated into it which will seriously restrict the higher frequencies used for TV transmissions, and with this resulting in a poor signal.

On the other hand though, if the wall plate doesn't have the filter and the socket is correctly marked then the feed to it might be filtered, so you have to keep this possibility in mind.

The only way to find out for sure what the situation is would be "if" your neighbour would let you tune your Goodman's on their aerial point, if they did and the channels came up OK then don't be tempted to re-tune again until you have to on 18th of next month when high power switchover takes place at the station.

Pete: Anyone experiencing odd problems such as you have described is always advised to carry out a complete default reset on the box to return it to its original state, then this action being followed by a fresh auto-tune.

The reason for this being necessary is because that in common with all digital equipment glitches can always occur when updates etc are taking place that results in the data being corrupted, and with complete elimination of whats already stored being the only way of getting around the problem.

Stephen McCarthy: The only way to view digital television with about a 99.9% reliability for most of the time is via Sky or Freesat, as about the only thing can can interfere with these services albeit for a "very" short time, is an extremely heavy thundery type down pour, even at that the effects of this infrequent occurrence can be somewhat lessened by using a slightly larger dish as is used by installers in North of the border installations.
