Matt: Ch49 is the transmitter used for such as Pick TV, Sky news, Dave etc whereas Ch50 is the BBC, but though going by your report with both these channels being received with a signal strength level that's liable to be hovering at around the lower cut off threshold level for your receivers tuner, but though with the other channels involved being significantly under it hence nothing is received, and although there is always a possibility of a fault having developed in the tuner, I do however feel that's its pointless to start altering anything before having verified as to whether or not the fault is also being experienced by others in your block.

Matt: In addition to that said, I had also meant to ask if both TV's involved are connected directly into a wall plate? because if they are and not via any other devices such as a recorder, then your problem could be caused by a fault in the communal aerial distribution amplifier, this being why its always best policy to enquire with others on the same system before over concentrating on your own, which judging by what you have said would appear to be quite straightforward.

Bernadette Newby: These boxes have a maximum storage capacity of 99 channels and should this total for any reason be exceeded then it results in the type of problem you refer to.
Press menu "installation" and select "first time installation" which results in the box "automatically" switching off for a few seconds, do not touch anything though until you see the LED on the front panel turning green, as this will then enable you to carry out a new installation.
That said, its always best policy when dealing with any older box to go into the "edit channels" facility and delete anything surplus to requirements immediately after having carried out the rescan.

Ian: Just out of curiosity, you say that the indoor aerial you have just purchased gives excellent reception when plugged into your television, is that with the TV output lead "from" your external aerials power supply being plugged into the TV?
The other point to remember being, to make sure that the portable aerial power button (on the rear of the box) is NOT set to on whilst you are using the external aerials power supply.
What make / model of device is the aerial being referred to?

Matt: The 1 metre long jumper leads being used on the TV's should be perfectly OK as its most unlikely that both would be defective, although I still have suspicions as far as the feed from the communal aerial distribution amplifier is concerned, because even although others might not be experiencing any problems all that really indicates is that the distribution amp is still powered up and not that there isn't a fault somewhere on your feed from the amp, this only being revealed with the aid of a signal meter being coupled into the wall plate, or indeed simply by being able to verify the line by using another brand of TV with a somewhat more flexible tuner system to that of the LG / Samsungs
Its really a case of looking at the problem in a logical way, insomuch that your installation (unlike some) is in no way complex, as you simply have two TV's and with each being coupled via jumper leads into a communal aerial socket but with reception being poor on both sets, and so when excluding that mentioned in the previous paragraph (re: feed fault) that only leaves either your jumper leads or the TV's themselves as being responsible for the problem, although more so where the tuners are concerned which might well be the same type fitted in both sets. (Samsung brand)
On using a test code of M15 5TL I note that the area is one dominated by two storey flats, and with a large communal aerial being installed on the top of the building on the corner Royce road / Reilly street, the aerial apparently facing Winter Hill.
And with reference to these type of apartment blocks, if you are located in one of the higher level apartments it would have been interesting to know if you could pick up a signal on Ch50 using either a set top aerial or a short length of wire (about 1.5metres or so) connected into the aerial socket, (middle of anyway) of your TV, because if you could then you could try the elusive Ch59.

alan: Feeds from a satellite dish cannot be altered in any way as the box sends instructions to the dish, and so you have no other option than having to run another cable from the LNB to the bedroom.
I take it that you do realise that you cannot use a Sky+ box without a subscription? and even if you have one the card issued can only be used in the box being used at the time the subscription was taken out, as you cannot interchange them.

alan: Just noticed that you had mentioned twin cable, yes its best to run a length of shotgun type cable rather than running another single.

Phil Murfet: Anyone living at close range under a high powered TV mast can experience a range of problems caused by the umbrella effect of being screened from the main beam of the signal, and so the next time this happens remove the aerial connector from the TV or box and replace it with a short length of bell wire or similar (about 4 feet or so) pushed into the aerial socket (the middle cup section) and check the results.
You could even try this at any time for a test.
