Su: As far as the Freeview HD TV is concerned it "has" to be connected to a normal aerial, so if you want to use your old Sky+ box (without a card) with it as well then you will require a connection being made to the dish, which by the way only requires to be a single cable as the old Sky+ box can only be used as a normal box due to the recording and playback facilities being inoperable without a valid subscription card being installed.

The other point is that your dishes LNB will require to be changed to a quad type "if" the one already fitted is only a dual version, quad outlet blocks generally being around £10.00 or so from numerous e-bay outlets, but you should have a look at where the cables enter the LNB to see if it has two spare outlet points before making any purchase.

Stephen: As nothing is seen mentioned as yet about any fault being in existence on Rowridges BBC mux you should consider the possibility of the signal you receive being excessively powerful thereby blocking your tuner on that channel, as its presently only the BBC mux that's operating on 200Kw, ITV still only being on 20Kw until March 21st, needless to say that if you use an aerial amplifier temporarily try by passing it.

Should you not use an aerial amplifier then if you have access to a set top aerial give your TV or whatever a re-tune (essential) with that plugged in, as it doesn't matter if any picture received is iffy as its really more the case of if you get it at all. Should a set top aerial not be available then just use a small length (about 600mm or so) of wire pushed into the middle part of the TV's aerial socket and carry out a re-tune, as if your problem is being caused by a high level of signal this test will prove it one way or the other.

Dave: My only reason for mentioning it was because the wording of your statement suggested an element of being puzzled about why it happens, as otherwise why bring the subject up as its something that I am sure is known by many.

Chris: If your Bush TV is of the dual standard type whereby its capable of Freeview
reception as well as Analogue then have you got it set on the latter, as the Sky boxes RF output is analogue.

I am rather intrigued though with what you mean by "coil", as neither the Sky box nor the TV have anything of that description, at least as far as being of a replaceable nature that is.

Paul R.: The reception predictor when used on the code provided indicates that ArqB the multiplex used by Smooth radio, as only being with the status of variable until April 4th, this being most likely why its not been picked up.

However you might possibly pick it up by carrying out a manual tune on ArqB's Mux Ch47, although in most cases its always best to scrub everything stored then carry out a manual tune on the elusive channel first, then use the scan for additional channels facility or whatever its called on the device you are using to recover the remaining muxes. Simon: The BBC mux is now on full power operation (4Kw) as will be the other five from March 21st.

Dave Lindsay: Yes, as the close proximity to any transmitter (even in this case of only 2 watts) will always make the local transmitter appear to the receiver as being far stronger than anything distant no matter how high powered the distant one might be, and likewise as you have suggested could well be being sensed by the receiver at a very low level even without the aerial being plugged in.

That said though, when the aerial is plugged in after passing the lower channels used by Frome it could also be the case that the signal level received from the relay is so high that its completely desensitised the receiver from picking up Mendip.

David: Regarding not being able to use manual tuning on your Panasonic, what model of Panasonic is it you have? as most that I have experience of the more recent types all have manual tuning facilities, or is it the DVD etc you are referring to?

Chris: Thanks for that report, the content of being extremely helpful for reference purposes as on-site reception reports of the type given by yourself that include info on the exact location (or as near as) enable a much better picture to be built up of what's liable to be expected in a particular area over that given in the reception predictor charts, these always having elements of educated guesswork involved hence in many cases being totally misleading if taken too seriously.

That said though, admittedly they are handy for the other info they provide regarding channel numbers, changes taking place on switchover dates, TX powers and distances / headings from post codes etc, in your case you being located at 15 miles from the station with it being located on a heading of 213 degrees.

David: Unfortunately the manual that I have for the TH-42PX60U is for the European "E" version and not "U", which I believe to be very similar in most respects and which does have a manual tuning facility, this accessed by pressing "menu", then in the three choices seen in the "main menu" box select "setup menu", then scroll down the set up menu to "tuning" and click "access", manual tuning seen 3rd down the list, if available on the "U" model that is.

However, if you do not see what's been described mentioned in the menu then I suggest that if at all possible the best policy is to borrow another TV and try what Dave Lindsay has suggested as it should have worked, as although you may not have had any success when you tried this with the Panasonic it could be simply due to the type of tuner used in the set, and its not necessarily the case that the procedure would not work on another brand with a tuner not quite so prone to being desensitised by the presence of high powered signals on its input.

If though any other TV you might manage to borrow doesn't work either, then I cant see much chance of success except by the inclusion of a group C/D aerial filter in line with the TV's aerial socket, as this will attenuate the lower 23-29 range channels used by Frome to a level that might allow the TV's tuner to pick up Mendips channels from Ch48 upwards, the upper range changing on March 28th as well as in 2013, but with Ch48 always being the lowest channel used.

By the way should you manage to borrow a TV and it had a manual tuning facility then have a try at manually tuning it, Mendips muxes being: 61 - 54 - 58(HD) - 48 - 67 - 52.

Another final point being that its assumed that your aerial is horizontally mounted and with a 272 degree heading towards Mendip?
