vanessa: On checking I have to unfortunately report that your model is on Digital UK's list of equipment that is not compatible with the new transmission modes being used since switch over, this meaning that the only way you can use it for Freeview reception is by purchasing a Freeview box and coupling this into the TV via a scart lead.

Ian Robinson: Yes, but its the set up behind the socket that I was referring to, as if one of the two coax cables does loop through behind your socket and its not been done for feeding to another socket in your own property then it has to be for another flat, meaning that whoever wired the flats has done it more in an electrical fashion and not RF, like a communal ring mains circuit, not the best policy!
The reason for this being, that if someone in another flat plugs something of an electrically undesirable nature into their socket it can affect your reception, this by either pulling your signal down or interfering with it in some other way, this being why individual feeds are always the best as a person in one flat cannot interfere with reception in another.
However I was just making a point, because if the reception on the Wharfedale is basically satisfactory then your signal must be reasonably OK, and so albeit that its a bit of a long winded operation, but you will have to carry out a test on a few EPG listed programmes on the Samsung to ensure that they are being picked up from the same mux transmitters as when they are picked up on the Wharfedale, this done by comparing the muxes shown on each devices signal test screen whilst on the same EPG programme.
If on comparing the results from both devices you find that they are indeed tuned to the same mux channels then the problem has to be caused by something very localised to within your installation, or the equipment used, and I would therefore like to know the model of Samsung TV that you use, as Samsung TV's are not exactly absent from the lists published by Digital UK of the various brand / models that can experience problems with the new transmission modes in use. My other reason for requesting the model being to ensure that its not one of the types that has a powered aerial supply facility, as if it does then this should be switched off.
Regarding manually tuning each of the muxes required, it might end up that you will have to do that.
By the way so that you don't waste time by duplicating muxes on the same transmitter use the following programmes for a test, the mux channels mentioned (in brackets) being from Crystal Palace:- BBC1 (Ch23) / ITV1 (Ch26) / ITV3 (Ch25) / Dave (Ch22) / Yesterday (Ch28)
Your alternative station is Hannington, albeit the three commercials being shown as being variable reception, the channels being :- BBC1 (Ch45) / ITV1 (Ch42) / ITV3 (Ch41) / Dave (Ch44) / Yesterday (Ch47)
(HD being left out of the equation)

vanessa: No problem! and pleased to have been of assistance, albeit it was unfortunately the bearer of bad news.
Should you have any problems with the setting up of your new box do not hesitate to ask.

theresa spence: Its impossible for anyone to answer a query involving reception without knowledge of a persons location, this preferably in the form of a post code, or at least one from nearby such as a shop etc.

David Pound: Are you sure that the TV in question is not an "HD ready" device? as if it is than cannot receive HD transmissions, if you have the manual for the set have a look in the specifications section / tuner and check if you see either DVB-T or DVB-T2 mentioned, as if its the former it cannot receive HD, if though you do not have the manual then if you provide the model number of the TV this can be checked out.
The re-tune message for tomorrow is because SDN is moving from ch31 to ch51 and increasing in power to 170kw, other than that nothing else is changing.

Tony: If your meter is HT-DM Plus then that wont respond to DVB-T2 signals, so its a bit strange why you see anything being indicated.
You are located at 34 miles away from Crystal Palace and 21 miles away from Sudbury, and although its about 40 degrees out from the rear pick up of your aerial it would be interesting to know the result if you tried a manual tune test on Sudburys HD transmitter, this operating on mux Ch47.
A little point I did wonder about though was, that when you had originally reported that the SD quality was indicated as about 100% or so, what was the signal strength seen associated with that quality? as sometimes if a signal being received is of a very stable nature then the actual strength of the signal can be quite low, and should this be applicable in your case then it might be on the verges of being too low for reliable HD reception, just like a signal on the opposite end of the scale (excessively high) will always cause problems on HD before SD, so strengths as well as quality has to be known.
What you have mentioned about you aerial might well apply, but the only real way for anyone to verify if their aerial system can be excluded from being the cause of a problem is by trying another TV on it, as PC card tuners and indications obtained from same tend to be a bit non-standard and therefore the readings obtained cannot be used for assessment purposes in exactly the same way as done with normal TV or boxes tuners.
If you have the type / model of tuner card fitted in the WMC maybe you could give an update on this.

Big Mart; Well you have just about exhausted about every possible test that there is to try, although should the chance ever arise for you to try your DVD recorder out on someone else's aerial system I would love to know the outcome of the test, as I feel that your HD problem is caused by either your recorder malfunctioning when on HD, or that that the quality of the signal is defective as far as HD is concerned before reaches your flat, as it has to be one of the two.

Mike: You cannot use a Sky+ box (or even a Freesat or Freeview PVR) as a recorder, as these devices can only record from their own internal tuners, and as well as that if you do not have a Sky subscription then you would not be able to record anything on the Sky+ box even if it was connected to the dish, as Sky permanently retains access to the recording side of the box.
If you want to record Freeview channels then you will require to purchase a Freeview PVR, or alternatively a standard DVD recorder, this of the hard drive type if you do not want to record onto DVD's all the time.

Donna: If you are indeed meaning "Freesat" then when you say that you reset the box are you meaning to the point where you had to re-enter the post code, as that instructs the box to pick up the ID code for your particular region.
If though this is what you have been doing, then to test if the actual box has developed a fault or not reset it again and enter B75 5JJ and that result in news etc for the West Midlands area, then reset it again and enter ML7 4NZ and in this case it should give STV Central Scotland, obviously switching the box off after each test to see if it loses the code.
