Indoor aerials | Installing

I have just moved into a flat with no external aerial. I have bought an indoor aerial which gives me excellent reception when plugged into my TV. But when I plug it into my HD Digital Terrestial Recorder, which is then connected to the TV, the TV states there is no signal. The recorder manual states that "your HD recorder can only deliver 50mA current under 5V, so refer to your indoor antenna's user manual to check if its power requirement fits the capability of your HD recorder". The aerial came with no manual, however on the box it states it has "External Power supply 12VDC/250Ma". Does that mean I need a ;weaker' aerial?

Hi Dave
I have plugged the aerial into the power supply. The recorder is a Philips High Definition Digital Terrestial Recorder (HDT8520). I do have the manual and have quoted in my message above what it says concerning indoor aerials.

When I emailed Maplins, from where I purchased the aerial, they suggested I needed to go and change it for a stronger one!

I have tuned the recorder. It worked fine at my previous flat where I had an outdoor aerial

jb38: I have returned the original aerial to Maplin and changed it for one with no power! Again it works fine with the TV, but not the Recorder. I have the aerial plugged into the box (Antenna IN), with an output lead connected to the TV. Plus the HDMI lead. I have no problem watching programmes that are recorded and stored on the box!! But alas the TV still says 'Signal lost'

Sorry - I think I've confused you... The TV works with the aerial both directly into the TV and via the box. And in both cases I have pressed the TV input on the TV remote control. But if I then press AV button and then select HDMI1 I get "Signal lost". The aerial I now am using has no power.

I have scanned and stored the new channels here - 21 TV and 11 radio. And the box is not on standby when I'm toggling between the two devises, and I can see the channel the box is 'sitting on'.

On the set up menu there is a "signal quality" which when pressed shows "Channel UHF30" and two bars > Signal Strength - the bar is approx 60%, and Signal Quality is approx. 40%. Not sure if that explains anything??

The TV is a Panasonic Plasma - Model No. TX-P37X10B

I really appreciate the time you are spending on this query.

Not quite sure what you mean....but, I went to HD Recorder > Settings > Set-up > Signal Quality Test > Ch UHF 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 30 - these were the only channels that showed anything, and they were all approx. 60% Signal Strength and between 80% - 100% for Signal Quality.

Okay - so at least I'm getting good signals, even though they do not appear to be reaching the TV!

It is strange! Maybe you're right - the box has somehow developed a fault. At least my TV works fine and picks up all the channels (except HD) - it's just the recording facility that the box offered that I miss!

Thank you very much for all the time you've spent exploring this problem with me.

I've just tried it - I just got even a blank screen!

Thank you very much for your assistance on this matter. I think for the time being I'll just have to live without my HD and recording facility! If I ever come across a solution - although I suspect it's the equipment at fault - I'll let you know
