ray stephenson: ukfree.tv is an independent website.

The reason it is as it is is because the commercial channels that you can't receive broadcast only from those transmitters that they wish to.

They transmit from about 80 of the largest transmitters in the UK. They were invited to extend their coverage, but declined. To broadcast from the 1000 or so relay (or small filler-in) transmitters would have roughly doubled the cost of transmission. As their objective is to generate profit from advertisers, it is not surprising that they didn't wish to do this when it would mean only an extra 8% of the population being able to watch their broadcasts.

Liz: Perhaps someone else can offer you suggestions as to what might be the problem.

The only thing I can suggest is that you try re-plugging the scart lead and try reversing it end to end. If you have another TV, try connecting the box to it and see if it works.

Donald Tyne: I've just check the BBC Reception website for your area and it says that the DAB BBC transmitter and BBC national FM services at Darvel went off this morning at 08:17. There is no reason given.

Did this coincide with the power failure in the area? If so, I wonder if that is the reason.

Santanu: Switchover in your area occurs in April, so you have until then before which you must do something.

In answer to your question, yes you can use the CRT TV with one of these boxes. If the box has one tuner, then you only be able to watch one channel at a time, and you won't be able to record a different one. Or to put it another way, if you're recording something, the only channel you will be able to watch is what you're recording (if you have only one tuner).

You can get boxes that have a DVD drive, a hard drive and two tuners which means that you can watch one programme whilst recording another, or even record two programmes at the same time (though you won't be able to watch a third as it's been broadcast).

tgmcewan: I would hazard a guess that it was a power failure due to the weather. Obviously where a transmitter is in rural area, then it's going to take a while for an engineer to get there.

Jean Billington: What aerial are you using upstairs?

Have you tried taking the upstairs TV to the aerial connection downstairs and tuning it in. Does it receive all the channels?

Brian O'Keefe: You will have to wait until 27th June before the missing channels become available to you again.

Because of the way things are run these days, 8% of the population won't be able to pick up any of the commercial channels using a terrestrial television aerial. They will be limited to the Public Service Broadcaster (PSB) multiplexes which carry BBC TV and radio, ITV1, ITV2, C4, E4, More4, C5, HD channels and a few others.

Some others will be restricted to the PSBs unless they have a different or extra aerial fitted.

Joe Smith: It is the hills around Eastbourne that are to blame. I don't think that the underground bunkers are to blame for the topography.
