Julian: I should point out that it was intermittent. Some times it was really giving it some and at others it was OK, until stereo failed completely.

Alan: I could not agree more.
The insistence that the "Press Red" on the BBC must be shown unless one presses green. And then you change to another BBC channel (or back to the previous one) and it comes back.
Why is there no option to disable this graphic or to have it displayed for a short time?
Now it's all digital, DOGS should be part of the DVB specification. That is, the graphic should be transmitted separately to the main picture, with receivers overlaying them either momentarily or perminantly, depending on the user's choice.

Willie: As Briantist says, an overload is a possibility, particularly as the high-power BBC services are showing as no signal.
Which begs the question, how is the feed from your aerial split? Is it powered (amplified) one (booster)? Is it accessible and is the level of amplification variable and can you turn it right down? Or, as a test, disconnect it completely so that the feed from the aerial goes straight to the TV that you are having issues with.

Julian: Your posting has reminded me of something I experienced.
The crackling coincided with the FM stereo indicator flickering. At times the signal was in mono only and eventually the stereo went altogether and the service was only available in mono for a number of days.
This was the case on a number of radios, so it wasn't a receiver issue.
FM transmitters send out a pilot signal or tone to indicate to receivers that stereo is being broadcast. Such crackling that I heard could be a symptom of failure of the crystal that generates this tone.
