Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat
Wednesday 31 August 2011 11:17AM

bobbob:Yes. Just disconnect the Sky box and replace it with the equivalent Freesat one.

Brian: Freesat will work without any problems in Cushendall.

Post DSO (at the end of next year), the local transmitter in your area will Freeview Lite so Freesat will be a far better option. Some channels that are on Freeview but not Freesat (5*, 5USA etc. ), may possibly come onto Freesat soon with the recent launch of Astra 1N.

You should also be able to receive Saorsat in Cushendall, when it's up and running, which hopefully will be soon.

Yes and no Zoe

You require a dual feed LNB and two downleads for Freesat+ (i.e. a PVR) to work.

It would be best to get a professional installer to fit the extra downlead as it's going to involve drilling through walls along with some climbing up ladders (in order to get to the dish) etc.

Does either Caldbeck or Divis reach Newton Stewart Terence ? If you can't get Divis a the moment you may possibly get it after DSO next year when there is quite a significant power increase.

You need a Sky dish Melanie, not an aerial. There is no such thing as a Sky HD aerial.

If you have a Sky dish get an approved aerial contractor out to install it, or get an installer to supply the dish, install it, and position it correctly.

Shouldn't be that expensive.

"The only problem that you will experience is if you are using the Sky boxes RF output to feed a TV in another room as the Foxsat does not have a modulator, and if you still wish to use this facility it will have to be done by other means, such as a "Digi-sender" plugged into the Foxsats scart socket, or an external modulator connected the same way, this latter device acting in exactly the same way as does the Sky boxes modulator."

Or he could change the LNB on his dish for either a quad or octo one, and run a number of additional Freesat recorders or boxes. This would be even better than a video sender.

I've yet to encounter a video sender that actually works jb38.

Divis (Northern Ireland) transmitter
Sunday 9 October 2011 8:11PM

Jordy: Do you have a link to that information ?

John: Was wondering the same thing myself re. the RTE mini mux.

I had been led to believe it would broadcast from Divis (the old mast would be apparently retained for this purpose), Brougher, Carnmoney Hill, and Black Mountain (presumably the low power relay for West Belfast).

Recent press releases have, as you say, dropped Divis so is Black Mountain going to use a higher power ? 5 watts is hardly going to cover all of greater Belfast.

Irish:

An octo LNB will run 4 PVRs (recorders), or 8 non PVR Freesat receivers, or any combination in between.

Likewise, a quad LNB will run 2 PVRs or 4 non PVR receivers, or any combination in between.

If you're in a Freeview Lite area post DSO then Freesat's the way to go, in my opinion.

Mrs. Grace Graham:

If you use the postcode checker on Digital UK you may find that you'll receive a signal from Divis post DSO. Carnmoney Hill will be Freeview Lite (post DSO) and will only receive about half the channels compared to Divis (although you'll still get all the channels, plus a few more, that you get now)

I'm currently in Jordanstown (BT37) and receive Digital TV from both Divis and Cambrett Hill in Southwest Scotland.

I'd check with one of the local Aerial installers to see what your best option is.

Camlough is also one of the proposed Digital one sites, apparently.

There are no firm details about a timetable yet, but hopefully, things will start to move after ASO in the ROI next year Jordy.

"there certainly won't be anything like D1 in the province for years to come."

I'm not so sure Jordy.

I've come across this document:

http://stakeholders.ofcom….pdf

"The proposed improvements and additional sites are documented in section 1.1.The sites listed include several sites in Northern Ireland. As yet, Digital One have not discussed the detail of the sites in Northern Ireland with service providers (i.e. the owners of stations and services on Digital One). However, once the process of defining the list as a whole is at amore advanced stage, Digital One will look at ways of working with its customers to switch onthose sites as an initial stage of the process of expanding the network."

Proposed sites are:

Northern Ireland: Divis, Londonderry (Derry), Armagh, Maddybenny More, Camlough,Carnmoney Hill

Also, from digital One's website:

http://www.ukdigitalradio…ers/

"Due to a recent change in the law, there is also a specific possibility that Digital One will extend coverage to Northern Ireland."

So, it looks as if Digital One are definitely interested in broadcasting in the province.

It'll be an absolute disgrace if this doesn't happen sooner rather than later, especially given all the extra spectrum that'll be available after ASO in the ROI next October.

We still can't get Absolute Radio on DAB in the province. That's a deplorable situation at this stage and something Ofcom needs to urgently address.

I just hope you're wrong about this prediction.
