T. Levine: In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the first six seasons of Suits were broadcast on Dave, but the channel chose to drop the series before Season 7, causing Netflix to pick up the UK rights, streaming the programme less than 24 hours after its US broadcast.

MikeB: I certainly find it reduces the "where's that window gone" frustration that my type of work always entails.
On a more positive note, the moves to first 16:9 and then HD production has certainly meant that the people making TV take much more care with the output, no matter if you watch it on HD or not.
Both UK and US television shows have better sets, make-up and lighting.
It's a shame that the BBC can't get past everything seemingly being shot for 4:3 viewing. It only US TV shows (I'm thinking Mr Robot as a good example) where the whole screen is used for dramatic effect.

I agree!
I agree that the issue is "audience inertia", but that's what is interesting. In the past, younger people didn't watch as much TV as those older then them. But the last decade or so, people when they reach their thirties don't go back to TV, they keep on watching online. That's the inertia.
Also, under 16s watching of TV is dropping like a stone. It's fallen by 25% between 2015 and July 2017, now down to just 85 minutes a day.
This means that increasing numbers of busy parents are leaving their kids with an iPad or Kid-mode Android tablet.
This means, I guess, that a TV isn't going in the kids room or bedroom, they are taking a tablet in there. The remaining TV watching is no doubt to family-friendly stuff like the X-Factor and that's a show in decline.

Thank you for contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries.
We appreciate that viewers have received only a few days' notice from Freesat; Channel 4 provided notice to Freesat in line with its contractual commitments. This followed the notification by Freesat of major changes to its charging structure, significantly increasing Channel 4's costs, which ultimately takes funding away from our investment in British programmes. To reduce the overall burden of these costs and make internal savings, we have withdrawn All 4 and Channel 4HD while we consider our long term relationship with Freesat.
Please note that the availability of Channel 4HD and All 4 on other platforms is unaffected and Channel 4HD remains available on Freeview, YouView, Sky and Virgin Media. Meanwhile All 4 can be accessed via our website, and a number of other devices such as iOS and Android apps, or on Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Smart TV, YouView, Freeview Play, Roku and Now TV boxes, Chromecast, Playstation 3 and 4, Xbox One and 360, Windows Phone 8 and Windows 10.
In the meantime, our other channels on Freesat remain unaffected and continue to be available (Channel 4 SD, E4, More4, 4Seven, Film 4 and the associated +1 channels)

"Thank for contacting Ofcom regarding Channel 4 withdrawing their service from Freesat.
The General Conditions of Channel 4's licence require Channel Four Television Corporation to ensure that the Channel 4 Service is at all times offered as available to be broadcast or distributed by means of every Appropriate Network (via a network through which a significant number of users receive television programmes - see Section 272(7) of the Communications Act). Further information about this is available in Part 2 (1A) on page 7 of the Attachment to Variation Number 18 of the Channel 4 Licence. This licence condition stems from sections 272 and 273 of the Communication Act which relates to the must-offer obligations for Public Service Broadcasters.
In the case of Freesat, the main Channel 4 service is still being shown on that platform. The HD version of Channel 4 and the All 4 service, which have been removed, are not subject to the same 'must-offer' requirements. We are therefore unable to pursue this matter any further."

Rtings was a site I used to verify my calculations, and it seems well argued. They are taking the data from the SMPTE, which does seem to used a scientific basis.
I must admit that I used a 4k screen everyday as I have a Philips BDM4350UC/00 43" IPS LCD Monitor that I used for coding.
This means that I do indeed sit about 70cm from the screen. This means that I can't see all of it at any one time, but I do benefit from having all 8.3 million pixels because I can use it to have my development IDE open, as well as web developer consoles open and various forms of graphical and text based remote sessions too.
But, it is clearly to big and close to watch a TV show on.
Quite at exactly what distance I can make out individual pixels at 103 dots per inch before it blurs into, I'm not really that sure how I could do it without fooling myself...
