ARQIVA NEWS ALERT

Date: 31 August 2011

Digital Switch Over completed for Waltham transmitter group

The Digital Switch Over process for the Waltham transmitter group, serving the East Midlands, has been successfully implemented by Arqiva.

Digital multiplexes are now being transmitted at high power from the main station at Waltham and, for the first time, from its 15 dependent relays at Ambergate, Ashbourne, Ashford in the Water, Belper, Birchover, Bolehill, Darley Dale, Derby, Eastwood, Leicester,
Little Eaton, Matlock, Parwich, Stamford and Stanton Moor.

The SDN multiplex at Waltham adopts its final DSO channel and power on 12 October 2011,as planned.

Following the analogue switch-off for BBC Two on 17 August, the remaining analogue signals for BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 ceased by 00:35 on Wednesday 31 August. The new digital signals entered official service at Waltham at 06:00, with the last of the relays completed by 13:21.

Arqiva is the transmission provider for all terrestrial TV and most radio services in the UK.

David: There is no link between Freeview and Freesat, if whichever channels wins the Freeview slot wishes to also broadcast on Freesat, that is down to the broadcaster.

Channel 5 was not making a profit when it entered into an "exclusive" deal with Sky for Channel 5 HD, but since being taken over by Northern and Shell the situation has changed.

Given the animosity between N&S and Sky, Channel 5 may well go free-to-air at the end of the "exclusive" period.

Paul : The problem you have is often caused by turing on (or up) the "sharpening" setting on the television set.

"Sharpening" was fine for poor analogue signals, with pictures provided by the digital systems (all of them) it will simply cause visual artefacts to appear in the picture.

If your TV set has a "sharpening" setting in the menus, turn it off.

Paul: Yes, I think that's fair comment.
