Brian Wright:
Dave Lindsay, ITV makes its living from showing adverts. By having macro regions it allows better targetting of advertising and therefore a better return from advertisers. Even Channel 4 and Channel 5 have different regions so as to show different commercials to different parts of the country.
Dave when you watch London ITV as I do then the adverts are transmitted before the news & after the news program. There are no "special " adverts for the London local input.
Crystal Palace transmits the London news so the problem lies with the extra local transmitters. I can't see why this has not been sorted ,given we have had HD in the South East for a few years now.
Of course it has no real benefit for viewers who watch TV with a screen size less than 37 inch?

MikeB.

I agree mike give me HD anytime I just think that most folks viewing from 10feet away don't appreciate the better quality.
The most benefit is not necessarily the extra bandwidth but the much less artefacts 'around the edges .

Mike Davison: One thing I do remember from being a child in the early 1980s and going to "hi-fi shows" to see my god father.

QUAD would get their one pair of speakers and one amp out and demonstrate it with a range of music from classical.

What a lovely bit of nostalgia. Yes the quad electrostatic speakers had quite a flat smooth audio response but weren't that efficient ,quite large and had relatively low audio sound pressure levels. At about the same period I was visiting HiFi shows at Harrogate (along way from where I lived) and nearer to home the annual February London Hifi show held at HOTEL RUSSEL in Russell Square. I remember reading a write up of a pair of Lowther Horn Loaded single driver loudspeakers. They were about 9 inches square and about 3 foot high.
To say they were loud when I heard them was an understatement because the write up in the HiFi News said, quote;' Lowther can be heard on the Third floor, ALL AROUND THE THIRD FLOOR!! .Those were the days.

Briantist. I came across a formula for bass reflex cabs in the 1970's in a book probably by Briggs and made 2 somewhat large units using Super 8rsdd units which are still in use today. I could never afford B&W or Kef so DIY was the order of the day including an FM tuner and amplifier using designs from 'Wireless World'.

Me the same, Was the tuner the 4 valve Jason FM tuner and the Audio Amplifiers the Mullard 5/10 .?

I have just sold eleven Mullard EL84's (brand New) on Ebay which I found in my loft and originally purchased in the early 1960's as spares .
Not one sold in the UK but bidders purchased from all around the world. The reason that one buyer had said he wanted to replicate the analogue sound of the 1960 's of his Marshal guitar amplifier.

I have been a member of UK tv for a number of years now and have contributed and have also been interested in other contributors comments etc.

I have asked 9in the past ,but have not had a reply, when I get an email from your site obviously something has triggered this. Usually (from other members sites) an email is received when there has been an answer to one of my comments o an original post.

Today I have received an email but due to the change in layout I cannot find any of MY contributions' and there is nowhere that I can setup my preferences.

Your help will be most appreciated.

Nick Anderson, wrote . I wonder if it is the intention of Ofcom and Freeview to eventually fill in all the available numbered digital channels with available services and over what period of time before the digital TV services are completely full?

The law of Parkinson, If there is space then it will be filled!!. Not necessarily with everything that is worthwhile viewing though.

When the spectrum is full then more space will be found by "compressing the HD channels even more. What happens then, well you will be pressed to buy into the latest 4K equipment. The only problem is that we will only appreciate this new format if we view via BlueRay disk. I cannot see how wide bandwidth can be accommodated by the terrestrial network but by Fibre optic broadband or Satellite.

Not many folks have got interested in the DAB radio's because I can say that most of them DO NOT DO WHAT IS SAID ON THE BOX. The quality is very rarely better than the FM and the ability to receive the same programs on the DAB sets as were received on my FM set in the same position and with its integral aerial. I can only get it working to receive the programs available by connecting the DAB set to an loft aerial via my aerial distribution system.
One only has to visit their local john Lewis store to see the vast quantity of DAB receivers to notice the fact that they are not selling that well.
When FM was launched back in the 1950's everyone wanted an FM HiFi set. We were informed from the outset that a proper aerial was required and most people accepted this requirement.
But with the launch of DAB we were informed that they would work fine and the portables would work fine on batteries and with the inbuilt rod aerial. 10 years on and not much has changed. You need an external aerial for the DAB to work properly unless you are close to a local transmitter and they do not work very long on a set of batteries because they are so "power Hungry" .

As for DAB + Unless the broadcasters give us CD quality without the compression and low bit rates that most broadcasters transmit today we shall just get more of the same.

Mike B,True, but most of us tend to have a fairly local transmitter (just as we do for FM), and more are being rolled out to fill various gaps. Yes, the current chips are relatively power hungry, but of course most radios are either plugged into the mains

I agree Mike ,I am not anti DAB or stuck in the past but I like HiFi and have an excellent lounge audio system but living in Cox Green, Maidenhead using my £120 Roberts and my Daughters Pure radio for my Kitchen listening I can confirm they do not work properly, unless they are both connected to a loft aerial. My previous £30 FM radio works fine on its rod aerial. Obviously I like the "extras that are available on DAB broadcasts such as the artist names etc.
I have to agree that DAB is adequate for the masses but unlike Europe,US & Japan we have lost out to the Audio diarrhoea effect and have lost our pride in giving great audio quality.
As you have indicated Mike we will have more bandwidth with DAB+ but I but I won't be betting that it will be used for better audio quality.

Nice article Brian But;You quote The standard Family pack from Sky costs £432 per month, and if you watch films that costs £204 more for Sky Movies. The most basic of basic Sky packages is "just" £240 a year and the Licence Fee.[3]I think you mean £432 a Year!! Still a nice saving though

Get rid of BBC4 . This will allow the BBC to add more original programs on BBC 1 & 2 and BBC can concentrate on more outlandish programming.

That way we can hope for a reduction in the foodie /cooking programming & endless variants!!.
