Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Nine Barrow Down (Dorset, England) mast?

DAB: Slightly reduced power due to a fault from 22 Nov 04:09 until 22 Nov 04:28. Off the air due to a fault from 22 Nov 04:03 until 22 Nov 04:09. Slightly reduced power due to a fault from 18 Nov 11:14 until 18 Nov 11:39. . BBC

UK Free TV shows the coverage area for a radio transmitter as a coloured overlay (orange for FM, other colours for DAB) on the grey map. We have computed the coverage by combining the terrain with the official radiation pattern. A single click will select the transmitter to view the coverage for a single site, and a double click goes to a page showing full details. Click on the buttons in the right-hand corner of the map to choose from different frequencies (or multiplexes for DAB).

11b covers a much bigger area than this, for example it covers all the way to Wool in the west

I get awful Planet Rock reception in my kitchen in Poole, Dorset (one bar on my PURE radio) yet all the BBC stations are fine (all bars up).

Can Poole / Bournemouth have a low powered filler transmitter?

JohnB: The BBC national multiplex is transmitted from a mast in Parkstone at 2kW. This explains the good reception that you enjoy on BBC stations.

Thanks KMJ. I can see the Parkstone mast from my garden!

I was wondering if Planet Rock will be / can be added to the St Catherine Hill transmitter as it is line of sight for most of Poole & Bournemouth where as Nine Barrow isn't.

JohnB: Future additions to the Digital One network are only likely to be in areas where there is presently a good signal on analogue Classic FM, but poor or no reception on DAB. D1 already consider that some of the 133 transmitters they have in service are uneconomic, and Ofcom is only requiring coverage to be provided at a level that is reasonable with due consideration to the commercial interests of the network. This differs from the improvements planned for coverage to the local muxes and the BBC national network. Bournemouth 11B could be added to the Parkstone mast in addition to the existing transmitters at Nine Barrow and St.Catherine's Hill.

I live in bovington and it is absolutely rubbish. Technology should be so much better today, but they can't even get the mobile signal right here either. My family love listening to planet rock and we cannot get it at home. A unhappy customer.

P Churchfield: Hi, P Churchfield. As you may know, Planet Rock was moved from Digital One, the first licensed national commercial digital multiplex to the second licensed national commercial digital multiplex, called 'Sound Digital'. Whilst this second multiplex is called 'national', it doesn't in fact, cover the whole of the nation, but only about 80% of it! The regulatory body, Ofcom, has only permitted the Sound Digital multiplex to be transmitted from 42 transmitter sites and unfortunately, both Nine Barrow Down and Bincombe were NOT included! This is not a case of what is technologically possible, but the case of a Government regulatory body not permitting it! If you have a 'gripe' then, you should make it known to Ofcom! I gather that Bovington is quite rural, and in that sense, rather like Norfolk, where I live. Rural areas like these tend to be sparsely populated overall, notwithstanding 'pockets' of dense population such as Army camps, and so as a result of the population overall being sparse, it tends not to be commercially viable to provide broadcast and communications services to the same level as those enjoyed by our distant neighbours in the large metropolitan areas! Sorry that this website cannot assist with Planet Rock or a cell phone service in Bovington!

Richard Cooper: Hi Richard, I tried Ofcom several times from different angles. They have no interest in the fact we've lost Planet Rock altogether, despite the thousands of comments from upset / angry people on the petition. The problem appears to be that they decided to do this to pave the way for lots of popup pop stations to broadcast cheaply, and also increase the talk stations (for some reason).
However, as far as I'm aware, there is nothing stopping Bauer from putting Planet Rock and Absolute80s back on the D1 transmitters. Well, obviously they'd have to pay someone else for the privilege rather than use the transmitters that they part own, so clearly it's not going to happen.

Jan Davies: Hi Jan. I was indeed aware that there was a massive petition from Planet Rock listeners. Bearing in mind you've already approached Ofcom, do you think that people should start lobbying Bauer Radio instead, to encourage them to put the Sound Digital Multiplex on to more DAB transmitters? Richard.
