Map of all DAB transmitters

You can click on a transmitter group symbol to see all the masts in that county or area, or click on a single transmitter to see the coverage area. Due to the large number of radio transmitters, many have been grouped into counties or administrative areas for ease of viewing.

What do the map symbols mean?

DAB radio transmitter,  DAB transmitter coming,  Transmitter group.

davidwf: Planet Rock and Absolute 80s have both been moved onto D2 transmitters and we have none in East Anglia. Please could you support the Planet Rock petition? https://www.change.org/p/…link
You can see on the petition page the discussions I've had with bauer about this and they offered no hope.

Peter: I have been researching DAB and the Isles of Scilly for you over the past couple of days, Peter. Having consulted several sources, including Government DCMS, Ofcom, Frequency Finder, mb21, a516 digital and Digital Spy, I can find no current plans for DAB on the Isles, carefully checking both the Freeview Lite/ FM transmitter as well as the Maritime & Coastguard transmitter, which carries Radio Scilly 107.9. My friends who are interested in radio are surprised, especially bearing in mind that the Isles have Freeview provision. There was mention of Orkney, Shetland and Scilly Isles DAB in an Ofcom document in 2012, but apparently no further mentions since. I see that Guernsey are going to get a BBC National DAB transmitter, like Jersey has. Your nearest DAB transmitters are Helston, St Just and Redruth, St Just being a relay of Redruth anyway. If you consult the Frequency Finder website, you can investigate transmitter powers for these transmitters. Hope this helps, Richard in Norwich, Norfolk.

Richard:

Just to add a note that the presence of a Freeview transmitter is unrelated to the provision of a DAB radio service. Aa an example, around Chippenham, Wiltshire the TV service is mainly sourced from Mendip, yet there is a DAB transmitter at Naish Hill just south of the town to provide the radio services. Mendip does not carry DAB transmissions at all.

MikeP: Hi Mike. Thank you very much for confirming that Freeview tv transmitters may well not site a DAB radio transmitter, however, did you know that the BBC today launched a lot more of their local radio stations on Freeview TELEVISION Channels, channel numbers 720 t0 734. This extension to the no. of local radio stations on Freeview TELEVISION has occurred today in London and the East, with other BBC regions that may only have carried ONE local radio station, will follow suit by carrying more BBC Local radio stations on Freeview television channels in the coming weeks.Sorry to keep emphasising the word TELEVISION, but this is radio on TV, which could be useful to caravanners and campers this summer, when going on staycation, saving them having to pack a portable DAB RADIO with their holiday luggage! I know you were only trying to be helpful Mike and i'm sure no offence was intended on your part or mine! Richard, Norwich.

Jan Davies: Hi Jan. I sympathise with you regarding no D2 Sound Digital Multiplex on East Anglian DAB transmitters. I think you'll find it is because if we did have that multiplex transmitting from transmitters around here, they would interfere with transmitters in Europe, just like today on analogue FM radio and digital Freeview TV! This is, I suspect, why Bauer Radio has given you no hope! Richard, Norwich, Mon 6th. June, 5 p.m.

Richard Cooper:

Yes, I knew that but they are not DAB services.

These are ideal for caravaners, and many others, who take a digital TV set with them while travelling. Most of the radio services on Freeview are carried on multiplexes that also carry television services, one of the benefits of digital encoding that allows multiple services on a single carrier frequency.

Good Morning. Have just seen the following on a516 digital:-

Small Scale DAB: One year on, driving technological advancements
Monday, June 20, 2016 Digital Radio , Editorial

A year after Ofcom first announced the winning applicants in a trial of "small scale DAB", the new independent operators have started to outdo existing operators with technological advancement on the platform.

Small scale DAB was devised as a more affordable way for smaller stations to launch a DAB digital radio service across smaller geographical areas than traditional DAB services. In June 2015, Ofcom revealed who would be part of the trial, giving new, small operators in places including Glasgow, London, Manchester, Norwich and Portsmouth the chance to run a so-called DAB 'minimux'.

Already the signs are that the new entrants to the world of DAB are shaking up the status quo: two of the operators - Niocast Digital in Manchester and Solent Wireless serving Portsmouth have led the way in adopting the newer DAB+ standard, with half or just over half of all services on their multiplexes now using the standard. Compare that to the multiplexes operated by the big radio groups, where original flavour DAB with mono sound still rules the roost, and that's despite the ever growing number of devices that can now handle DAB+ - now a common standard in most countries that use DAB for terrestrial radio services.

Whereas traditional operators have tended to fill their multiplexes with mono offshoots of their services in original flavour DAB, the new smaller operators utilising DAB+ mostly broadcast in stereo and can still save on DAB distribution costs - thanks to lower bandwidth requirements - opening the door to DAB for more stations.

Now, an increasing number of services using small scale DAB services have started to activate slideshows. A common feature on DAB in other countries, slideshows allow users of DAB devices with a suitable display, including the DAB compatible LG Stylus 2 and many in-car systems, to see additional information.

The Slideshow function can be used to show album art, programme information, news or just an enhanced station logo image. Previously only available on Heart and Capital on London DAB, DAB slideshow has been introduced on Indulgence on the Solent Wireless DAB multiplex, The Breeze on the Bristol minimux and is available on Angel via the Aldershot, Birmingham and Norwich minimuxes. Ash Elford from Solent Wireless confirmed they're working on making slideshows available on other services on the multiplex in due course.

Originally, the small scale DAB trials were due to come to an end now. But given their success, Ofcom has extended the trials for another two years and it's looking likely that these multiplexes will in time become a permanent fixture in the UK's DAB landscape once the legal licensing technicalities are sorted out.

Despite the small coverage offered by these services and the many niche services being carried, the technological advancement offered by these trials: making use of newer technology to make DAB distribution more affordable, maximising the use of DAB radio displays and providing listeners with more than just the usual radio content recycled under the "Extra" banner, small scale DAB is providing the platform with a much needed boost from the grassroots of radio.

Could be of interest to viewers of the UKFREE-TV website, I thought!
