Read this: TV channels have 'up to 10 years' to meet tech threat

Summary: Under UK broadcasting regulations, public service channels must be prominently displayed in the electronic programme guides of cable and satellite providers. Freeview, the UK's free digital television service owned by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky and Arqiva, is working towards getting its Freeview Play, a live and on-demand service, built into every TV set sold in the UK - which would ensure that viewers have easy access to PSB channels and the programming they produce. - www.ft.com

Trevor Harris: Simple - if your the gatekeeper, you control who gets through the gate.

If you are Sky, then you can chose who comes first in the EPG. If your Now TV, your 'most popular/recommended' will reflect either what is the most popular/good, or what Now TV want you to see.

My Now TV box has on demand stuff from the BBC, ITV and C4 as well as Now TV. But of course Now TV could simply feature there own stuff, and therefore make it much more difficult for anyone to find out what else were available.

There is so much content out there that we tend to look at whats on the shelf in front of us. So if you hide everyone else's stuff at the back of the shop, then even though its there, and you can claim your offering it, in reality many people wont find it, and will chose your stuff instead. That might work commercially for them, but its potentially very bad for media diversity and the consumer.

If you want to see this on the internet, look at Net Neutrality, which the Trump Administration is in the process of destroying - 'choice' and 'access' can be illusionary if the people supplying your media and access make sure you can only see their content, or make it much more difficult to see someone else's.
