Digital Radio Mondiale was supposed to be the saviour of AM radio decline on patronage, but it never left the starting post after years of prototype testing, thus the inevitable never ending wait for DRM tuners to appear on retailer shelves! DRM Consortium dithering allowed the technology to be eclipsed by smart devices piggy-backing radio services and actual stand-alone smart radio units!
The sad thing about DRMs failure in Europe, it incentivised consumers to abandon AM, while the fact remains that radio spectrum cannot be grown!
Outside of Europe, DRM could have been useful for relaying digital AM domestic services to remote areas like the Australian outback, but the Australians have had to rely on the VAST satellite system, unsuitable for reception pickup for listeners on the move, especially in vehicles..
