I'm walking to the media podcast I'm actually on the show today the latest in the Stream was is Disney plus as a Stella March quarter me more blue bow place the bet on Britain's future.
How's it going to compete with the rest of the UK press also we have an audio producer.
Adlington about the Preston steps and multi-track is taking to make the ender Street more inclusive plus tips for aspiring producers on how to apply for the fellowship scheme and in the movie quiz what announcements are shaking up film and TV this week that's all coming up on this edition of the Menu podcast prize was announced in Ukrainian journalist, what honoured for their courage insurance and commitment to truthful reporting it comes as aljazeera journalist shireen, Abu actually was shot was covering Israeli raid in my spank the publishers accused Israel ever intentionally attacking the present allegation the country is denied here in the UK the government's laid out the groundwork.

Changes for the UK media key bills include the online safety bill the data reform Bill and the Media bill which would enable the privatisation of Channel 4 on with the show I'm here to meet experts ready to debrief on the latest news shaping our industry first up is the entertainment director heat magazine Boyd Hilton boys you've been following the fastest quite closely this week.
I imagine sound dance from the ceremony was the winning BT that you could you do if you managed to refer to Piers Morgan's ratings or lack of them could she was asleep easy to align yourself against Piers Morgan is no that's always that's always good for the wagatha Christie trial.
Have you been tracking the tweets?
The corporate identity Jim the Guardians media and he was very excited that he's going to be covering this just right.
I need between single thing that says transcribed and complain but it is absolutely brilliant.
I mean you don't know this is Coleen Rooney if you believe worked out that Rebekah Vardy has been leaking stories about her to the tabloids and Rebekah Vardy has the light bulb which means it's up to clean to prove that all this stuff true but because of this lots and lots of facts coming out and it's coming but I thought sort revealing some of the ways the tabloids work which may not be so transparent up to the public at large to liaise with actual celebrities to have the pictures taken as you know I'm deals done.
Although I think I mean talk about how the paparazzi with actual celebrities that everyone's going back to Princess Diana famously arranged the staff very much older people did so I'm not sure that but yeah, I need to see the workings of the system journalists and showbiz.
What's the weather in media commentator Oakley hi Kate did you manage to catch the bastards to yes? I wasn't there then there were two things that stood out for me one was the amount of shoutouts about Channel 4 privatisation were made from the stage senior British television executives in a Steve McQueen lots of people saying this is the wrong move government don't privatise Channel 4.
It's doing a great job.
So that wasn't going to me and I know maybe they'll listen although I doubt it and enjoy seems to have her own mind about this and it's in one nothing.
I've read lots of climatarian.
I have my own views about why didn't win anything but I thought it was a bit of a shock that one absolutely nothing it was studying the didn't win boys was there a surprise in the room from town to delete that one direction for the best director much is a prefix.
That was in the film the third biggest of all of the night but such as the weird watch TV the directions to speak to the craft awards and editing people to think that you know the whole of after thousands of people gathering a room and decide to snob a show about every single bacteria is a separate gathering of age categories.
So it's not that they can give all of the 5 actors who was nominated for an award that none of the jury's voted for it and I've been ordered back injuries for all the other end up being slightly weird sometimes they just you know they're going surprising way directions for that way, so I think.
Do you remember that much as I'd love the batteries and I think it's remembered forever the TV classic no matter is not winning a pop into baftas.
Plus has announced an impressive March quarter having 7.9 million new subscribers Netflix figures last month have you made Disney's performance a good sign was like wow the shares Have naturally recover down was 40% in the last year missed the whole streaming area is such a Focus by Wall Street analysts.
It's kind of shopping for me.
I think the reason it doesn't he is doing so well, because this is me.
I mean they have his grave franchises they have lots of content and course that's what gives people to sign up.
What day is the question but they're signing up? I think that the contrast with Netflix is interesting because your Netflix is basically the poster child for streaming.
It's been the longest player out there and so the fact that they actually stumbled and I think they lost too many subscribers in the last in her saying that they're going to go down more is very telling about sort of where we are in the match fishing cycle of a whole streaming business.
It was very interesting Alex mum was talking she's the city of Channel 4 and she was talking about you know their next their plan to tried it.
Obviously avoid the station and I asked I said what about with all this uncertainty that was happy with the channel.
How are you going to make deals with whatever the big tech deals you want to make her like for example with Netflix and YouTube week before later about you too what you said the time which he said was really interesting for me about this.
Is that the stumble of Netflix shows that this whole sort of programme.
PlayStation other words for amount of money you have to pay per episode 4 streaming sure which is be going up and up and up and up continue to do that because one of the things that Netflix subscribers as they have been getting is we are not going to spend as much money on content so that's an interesting signal.
I think the market contrast that with Disney which obviously has a huge company and revenue level is out with say is it they've got theme parks.
They've got movies that all this stuff that I can wrap up and as we saw on the results the theme park is the pandemic but you know that's coming back strong the cruise business is coming back.
So it doesn't surprise me at the Disney is doing well on streaming the question is you can anyone really maintain this kind of momentum.
I guess that's the question.
Why is it actually content content content is?
Disney doing so well.
Yes, probably I think Disney has the massive advantage of a huge library that has Star Wars brand has a model brand has a huge advantage having Netflix Netflix kind of strategy seems to be a couple years ago to sign up every kind of big TV producer Shonda Rhimes sexual.
I'm lost paid off because those big reduces Ryan Murphy you know if it is not example seem to have taken it upon us to produce and quite esoteric not there most mainstream offerings.
Glee was made by one person fox.
You know it's incredibly popular sofas made the network TV comes in America that has to get neither of those what are provided with think a lot Netflix content is fantastic.
My favourite showing time is Netflix audio out but equally if dust feel now that we can we can it's rare to get a kind of genuine.
Show on restricted real, where is he look at Disney plus Apple TV Plus fantastic job as well.
I mean honestly really really first class, so he's all that Netflix it's difficult time of Contact with it.
I'm looking forward to seeing you do a dance at some point Boyd maybe need to invite you to our Media podcast part that happened to reach the mature point where you know they can't really grow any further and thus Disney still in catch up mode and it's got a few more years to get there and the other thing is that I have run out of countries and one of the things that really kept the engine going was over wanting another territory another territory another two and if you look over the past couple of years the main Grove End
Us explained other territories outside of Us international there's no more countries to them international.
I'm busy and under all so there is that Disney obviously has this huge brand has a big brown but you know outside the US less of a big brand if you see what I mean is an arms race.
It's a continent Arms Race you know how much can't what continent who is the best content who is the contents of this next group of subscribers.
I mean remember streaming television is just like pay television or cable television.
How do we create something that's going to be a tractor and again if they've got this huge no battleship, because I've got different brands espn's a huge brand is this caused by the different levers again that they can pull that doesn't have that which is why I think what I think.
It's probably going to get onto which is why they're taking now about advertising supported because they've been only as far as subscription video on demand.
And now after having said no no no we will never do advertising their own house saying that they will do every time is Disney which came in later has already announced that they would I haven't been to your bike at the end of this year.
So this is the next battleground description battleground now.
It's going to be the Advertiser supporting about it and that's a different kind of market right.
There's people are watching in a different way.
They're watching ads.
They may want different kinds of contents maybe Netflix launches.
Have one brand anymore.
I don't have Netflix Netflix fantasy or Netflix drama and then they can put against so it's an Evolution here, Netflix is always USP you know they dropped shoulder that makes in one go in an absolutely obsessed with that model that has been a big bonus ball and change the way that all the traditional BBC Conwy
Similarly the other streaming services Disney pretty much only ever put a week this week.
So you know maybe I'll drop the first to Apple TV Plus with most of the extremes.
They go for the weekly event funny enough for the streams that maybe haven't got quite the content volume the Netflix has those weekly dropped you keep those in the papers are on social media at alive.
Don't they was if your Netflix you had so much content you can drop the whole series because you're onto something next but haven't really got that volume have they also it's weird because you not the people of having their TV shows talked about on social media and the Netflix model of dropping over there in one go slightly to fix that because if you dropping your stuff once a week gets everyone excited interestingly they doing more more dividing the seasons of Stranger things coming out.
They must be absolutely thrilled.
Netflix is one of the Iconic shows but the dividing the snacks evening to to do with them and they done it with other things so they can get to you.
It's just the right about this whole move towards not dropping the whole thing at one time.
It's classic television right.
I mean this is what the model has always been on Classic 80s, so it's you know g the stream has a friendly realising that actually you know this isn't that different of the Universe and the way to keep the audience attention and again as you say your traction on social media is to create something that a weekly event or whatever it is, and I mean it's a very good point but Netflix is doing in terms of spreading the Seasons if they don't see what's happening at that's the way to keep their name in the price of the shows alive for longer.
Cos that's always been the broadcaster talked about that for years you finish this series and you know that.
Tops off we had you keep that interest as an excuse me has been prepared in that launched yet, so I mean this is classic television economics and marketing Tactics come to streaming broadcaster.
That's another its way into a little more streaming is Channel 4 are they just struck a deal to wear 1000 H of some of the hit shows for free on YouTube also this was arranged because our them to sell the ads around the programs which is clearly is not what YouTube have allowed.
Can you tell me about the deal what we going to see on it sounds like they're kind of classic location location location SAS who dares wins episodes of those going onto YouTube as you say that advertising around the programs programs out there and make some money from their library and sabotaging around it and 2009 that was but that girl fell apart.
Confusion between YouTube of them must have the programme the government that they can make money out of their shows by anyway, we could just trying to launch as many new things come up with as many new statements to show their fast-moving is it sort of Too Little Too Late time ago and actually fizzled out in 2014 it was benched and the reason it was a bad deal then was because they got a big Shaq they gave them all their contend that there was no other revenue stream, and they basically saw as a way that kind of a look here.
We're on YouTube didn't understand the marketing dynamic between the two.
The thing is different now is as boys said they'll be able to participates in the sale of the commercial advertising going to sell the advertising around you too very different.
It's not YouTube selling is channel for sale South selling ok? That's number one number to the shows that are going on as boyfriend to some of the shows, but they're going on 30 days after broadcast ok syllables Channel 4 get the first by the jury.
That's giving it is not day and date right, so that's important to because it was a really understand their leveraging their shows if you see what I'm saying that's different than what they did before that is very different and I think a very smart Move by the way this deal has been in negotiation since at least January next week.
I mean this is going along the gestation period so I don't think it's like a reaction to oh my gosh you think of something else.
We can throw back at the indoor is commercially I'm a visitor must have covered in commercially.
They're doing really well.
I mean the advertising is up there.
You know they're not they're not the government.
I mean they make all the money themselves and I just think it's Ludacris the government trying to privatise Ludacris what's the Feeling from Independent producers about Channel 4 now.
They should have had a couple weeks to digest the news.
Do they think the battle is lost or do they still think there's an opportunity to keep it in public ownership changes when you consider that it was it 98% of something in the responses that the government asked in interviews on what should work against privatising in the still with it.
I mean you have to start thinking can anyone do really and I think there's some criticisms.
I've seen from Son of juices to Channel 4 should be better.
I think that might be a bit harsh.
I didn't have any prepared for what I think is a good shoes wrongheaded bit of politician from the government particularly and added to be honest with you.
Head of news the price Boris Johnson is a liar and stuff like that.
You know I'm fascinated the Andrew Neil show commission that started the only noticed died last week that we can do that right now onto a deep dive for the week.
Yeah, I caught up with audio producer Ollie Adlington I'll leave a member of the steering team for multitrack.
That's the charity creating opportunities for underrepresented groups in the audio industry.
He tell me the lights finish types including the multi-track fellowship with its successful applicants get paid training and placements at leading audio production companies and the opportunity to pitch for real commission multitrack is an initiative to provide really good and substantial opportunities for people who are trying to start a career in audio, but may be struggling to get a foot in the door.
Anybody I think he wants to pursue a career in radio and podcasting should have the opportunity to do that.
I think it's like in order for that to be true.
We have to make changes about what is required to be able to even get all that kind of like first wrong the fellowship is 30 nishal thing that we came up with and we are sort of like expanding what multitrack can do you know production companies sign up to be partners and what that they will offer a one month paid placement paid at the living wage for a someone trying to get into the industry the fellows themselves.
They will get a minimum of 2 months of work so go for one month when production company another month another so it works quite well for the industry, because it means production companies only need to be able to find the budget to see one month of the placement that we can make sure the fellows get a minimum of 2 months we provide a lot of advice and support and structure for what we want the fellows to get out of that time so the type of experiences.
The fact that they need to have a line manager and they need to have bits in place to make sure that the experience that they have is actually really good one during the time as well.
They get one day or whether training the usually has been on a Friday and it means all of the fellows who are all different production companies having their placements will come together for one day as a group we have a trade curriculum which is delivered by a mix of people from the partner production companies people from the multi-track team and other independent producers and in the last element is that will provide an opportunity for the fellows to pitch for a real commission they've been BBC documentary radio documentaries which the BBC is kind of ring-fenced the number of commissions in there commissioning rounds in the fillets have the opportunity to develop and pitch an idea during the fellowship with support and whichever one's get chosen to be made.
That's then a project that those fellows get to go.
Turn off the placement end and so it means they've got a piece of a like great freelance work lined up an opportunity to actually produce something and get that film producer credit those are the kind of like four elements of the fellowship paid work training networking commissions variance shared and the challenges that faces its worst range of industries and hear what happened when they started but maybe forgetting that was 20 years ago when things were a cheaper all the world was slightly different place some of the things that we were talking about a lot when we were thinking about coming up with multitrack and what we could do is like you know really obvious kind of Legacy reasons.
Why we have an industry that doesn't represent the population that is supposed to say things like I'm paid internships or really low paid work really unreliable work.
There are lots of people.
Industry that did manage and make a career even with those all those disadvantages, but there's actually loads of people that would never have even been able to begin doing that because they didn't have whatever financial safety net they weren't being sort of Taken under the wing of a like existing editor or commissioner who saw themselves in you and therefore.
I think there's a lot of cutter Hire Reading your own image and all of that stuff everyone that gets on the fellowship for multitrack.
It's like yes, they're from groups are underrepresented in industry, and that's what are the things we exist to do these people are really creative Talent AIDS hungry producers and say the companies tend to be very happy about who comes to their company the way we try to do things that multitrack the way we try to think about how you recruit and how you think about the environment you're creating for people that hopefully kind of thought-provoking for people that are involved and you know and for all of us.
It's like we're all really active we have.
Conversations about how the industry works and and the types of environments were creating and how we might be recreating you know inequality your unconscious bias that just exist in the wider world and the company that becomes part of multitrack gets to also be part of having those conversations which you know by talking about it and thinking about it.
Eventually that starts to lean towards incremental change in new ways of thinking about doing things so apply to be a fellow Orlando someone who would pretend you're making good fellow.
What are they? Have to do? What's the process is a deadline next Monday next week.
That's right.
May 16th is the deadline if anyone wants to have a look without multi-track UK and then you'll be able to find all the details there about the fellowship and how to apply but with basically looking for people of colour people from working class backgrounds people disabilities who are trying to get into 0ju would be someone who can show that you are passionate about audio and this is something.
And that might be by your own podcast you've made just stuff you made in your spare time a fellow will be someone that's not already turning all of their income from all Joseph they are still trying to get that foot in the door touch you make it their job.
That's the kind of person.
We're looking to apply it has been people that have done multitrack before you hearing about multitrack was when they realised it could actually be a job Rochester hobby and like that's great would love those people to apply that was all the Addington that you can catch the full interview if you're a patreon supporter where we cover some of the practical steps for production companies to start networks that can take to make the industry more accessible and inclusive is a really great chartley, and if you want to get it and all of our previous deep dives.
Are you going to do is become a supporter on patreon? Just go to patreon.com currently taking applications.
You've got until Monday to get those in to do.

I mean that's never been there in their USP so weather doing is only.
Going to do much more about the UK with basically shifting from being a business-to-business type brand right for Endless and people who are checking the stock market to being and that's the other thing about is remember.
This is Michael Bloomberg company Michael believes in Barrow-in-Furness news and when he sees happening in the UK is a lot of pictures of things like you no news UK start TV GB news and history of is come out of basically said there was a wonderful quality said the Investment or making Bloomberg UK reflect optimism about the nations future in our commitment to supporting economic growth and strengthening Civic traditions by creating good jobs in British girl is in providing new information decision makers need to move there throwing money at it.
Will it be a competitor to the ft? Well, we have to use already cut a business-oriented.
So yes, will it be a competitive economy?
Yes, I would say but I was thinking about how am I stand up against some of these some sort of more what is a new services that were seen in the UK now Boyd is Kate were they think there's a market force of unbiased news the Michael of look at the talk CVs and the GB news most people really think there is a problem with I'm biased news don't matter most to feel pretty comfortable with what they get and think it's absolutely fine.
Yeah, I think you're probably run it in that financially independent minded and as far as TV channel talking but he absolutely what's happening with you can use I mean to me is a small room is syphilis group of people in this country define themselves as by being anti-woke been a recent suddenly lots of people have got pound signs in The Rising
Speak to them.
That's like half the country.
It's ended up being nowhere near a new fact.
There's a big difference between buying the Daily Mail and believing everything they say I am reading online watching a TV show with the Daily Mail columnist or very very opinionated staff the realisation is exactly what these people when I watch the Piers Morgan children with the reason why I think it's because you just know exactly what is opinion is everything actually saying it really do you think any of the talk to you? The stuff is sort of salvageable like it looks pretty good is pretty well mate.
I mean if there is a bit more entertainment legends of a stripped away over everything must be anti-woke.
Do you think they've got a chance? Maybe I mean? I think I just need to get some.
Interesting presenters then because they're great journalists and their natural engaging people all the time around well.
I picked her Scott Thompson and Co that they share their televised the media quiz it's the best way and it's the best concert that's on offer its programming which could transform station will continue to dog food here on a podcast this week.
I'm going to be describing 3 media stories for a major announcement has been made in the UK broadcasting world all you have to do is tell me who the story is about so three rounds buzzing with the name if you know the answer so Kate you will say Kate and boys.
You'll say this number 12 Giants have signed deal for a UK sports joint venture who is involved with boys got in their first, but who is it?
And Warner Brothers Discovery Warner Brothers Discovery working together and BT Sport channel and Eurosport sports rights expensive, but sports programming potentially quite lucrative is this a good deal for both days companies? I mean BT remember garden to support.
They were trying to get a shark spirit the front that could we have you have to sign up for your broadband service so that's why this work is in the first place Warner Brothers No mods with Discovery Discovery has Eurosport which is a sports channel for the Olympics so Discovery believes that from their DNA of being kind of a factual based company that live sport is obviously the ultimate factual live in engaging fan events David runs, Discovery now.
What is in the sport of big way they done the word with golf? It's only make sense to do this one point they were actually buying a BT Group or BT Sport and say this to basically work together.
So it's ok question number to which two major UK broadcasters have committed to the levelling out the heavily nailscute category of documentary directors BBC and Channel 4 there.
I just committing to 50% women directors in documentary which is great news to bet it has not before but this is always a good move to get more focus on Dr diversity equity inclusion, so I'm off work avoid long time coming in the factual documentary round-robin.
Just generally I mean that someone tweeted the percentage of female directors in fictional inscripted stuff and it was unbelievably in small it was too.
Single figure percentages great moves absolutely ok point a piece final question question number three who has the BBC named as the new Doctor Who boys, who is it from sex education Instagram get out and there was a bit of response saying or what I really a small announcement for Doctor Who they used to be Big Show's revealing that who the new Doctor was but it work really really well for them.
Didn't yeah? It was fantastic is a new that shoots himself will be at the baftas is nominated that he was presenting Russell and the two of them together and I spend a lot of time on the red carpet myself.
Just staring at them both having a whale of a time you going to tune in to the to the new Doctor Who
Doctor Who fan about wasn't really that much of a fan of the last Dr Judy I mean I like Peter Capaldi that message it was fantastic and Judy is rising star.
I mean you want a black dress gold award couple of years ago in 2024.
He was doing sex education.
I think it'll be a very nice new direction for Doctor Who think that's good.
Yeah great move so I'm looking forward to boy 221 you win an audition to be Doctor Who number 15 in a couple of years pipe before you go as we've got both of you here avoid any recommendations about what we should be watching or listening to the moment.
Yes, they're not shining girls which is been on the moment with Elisabeth Moss Handmaid's Tale frame probably the greatest actors in the world right now.
She's serial killer thriller twisted.
Dark beautifully mate and relentlessly fascinating loads of twists and Turns out.
It's brilliant and severance was the TV drama of the year so far anyway also an Apple TV plus.
We know it is ridiculous the wrong they've got shiny girls quickly is my current choice.
I saw Brian stelter, whose is that media correspondence say that he watched the first seven episodes on double speed and then watch the final episode in normal time which was shocked about and then lightly disappointed that maybe that's what I should have done for severance to you.
Got to be concentrating.
Haven't you? It's not the speediest much that has to be watched the digested and studying I talked about and Kate anything at the moment.
So I'm looking out for all things.
Funny the boys Manchester horses that I just finished watching that was brilliant.
I mean I really have loved that.
I think it's great show but I guess the other thing I'm a sci-fi fit and so I've been watching the Star Trek the current things on paramount to keep track.
I'm in the US right now so paramount is where I get it, but it's really hard to keep checking for all the stuff is I think that's the thing about streaming is a not only do we have bounteous of choice available, but you know how do you remember where everything is I think that's the next the next thing is I'm still waiting for somebody come up with that goes across all the different services and says hey this.
Is you want to watch right now and this is a way going around having to subscribe does a free trial you know what you need to do a course.
I'll be the next thing as a problem before in the UK is on Amazon Prime on prime video also, what's quite good Witch of Man
See is the new Star Trek strange new worlds which is a sudden for episodic version of Star Trek if you didn't fancy something that was sort of a long one 10 part story.
I think that's going to be on paramount when it launches in June in the UK is that right that's right.
