Elegance is a journey at half past dot.co.uk Knockdown kitchen wall Victorian roof clean up all cobwebs check the ghost rewire socket check the budget again in back on endless DIY projects fix creaky floors or just move in with the range of new build homes in a pot England and Scotland to make buying your dream home a reality start fresh with Cala homes visit colour.co.uk and Friday development near you are welcome to the media podcast Iron Man figures on the show this week is the annual Media reaction cervical cancer Jane off the theatre on the findings taking over at CNN but after taking on the top job at the BBC and mealtimes is this is toughest challenge yet.

Also on the programme.

How some enterprising salesman, might be using the Spotify to launder money.

Facebook sitting close tab on Facebook news in the news this week as Warner Brothers Discovery announces that the right is an actor strike will cost it half a billion dollars this year by the house of combined forces to pay their workers to a new podcast strike Force 5 features Stephen Colbert John Oliver Jimmy Kimmel Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers but in this humble podcast opinion could do we spend a little more money on their recording software elsewhere many inches have been written this week about the closure of CITV ITV linear children's channel, but the generation and most items will be satiated by the news Big Brother will premiere on ITV on the main channel and you love Island spin-off.

All Stars is coming to ITV2 who says that he is dead.

London podcast studio s Kirstine studio Media podcast debut it counted people's Kimberly godbolt hello how you doing, so we talk a lot on the show about the Slow Down TV commissioning at the TV festival a couple weeks ago was definitely hot Topic wasn't it? Just this change and commissioning effects on on some of the people you look after or colour.

Come to your doors is absolutely massive is all anyone can talk about it is all we hear about we obviously sit right in the middle between all the production companies and channels and streamers.

Who are you talking to us when they have rolls to give us to work on all of the thousands and thousands of freelancers who are desperately looking for work.

So we we really sensitive to even a fine market difference and this is.

Huge, it's been really really hard for everyone and I know that that's been said a lot but it is true and it hasn't got a lot better and to the point Raven just just in the last 24-hours.

There's been a post on reddit with someone is and writing a letter to telly to hand in their resignation which is one of sadly many that we already know about but we go to work something if you can if you can't find you you have and and you know people are leaving I think also people are fairly annoyed with the senior people who is sitting in Christie staff jobs telling them just to hold their mouth now because as you say if people got a mortgage rent bills etc and live and with the cost of living going up an absolute nightmare for people.

There's only so much.

You need to use this time to Wisley make yourself better at something that people want to hear even though that is kind of the best that people can do at the moment, but there's a lot of anger and there's a lot of upset because I got back up again loads of people with me no production managers for example where I back in their droves.

We love you and you can charge anywhere you like we need you all this love and then all of a sudden you know from the knees again and back on the ground good signs.

It's just a little bit too early because commissioners have been away stuff still needs to be on the telly and so they will be bits and bobs have been in development for a long time.

So yeah, I'd say it's some big formats and fact.

Stuff is you know it's prickling and may come through but on the whole everyone saying it's kind of next year.

It's going to come back in a properly and you know this community of people is and listen to people talk about their own struggles and challenges the industry because this is overwhelming sense of loneliness and that the freelance community.

I just not looked after and have nowhere to go and nowhere to turn and that it's so others and work around and go person got there so successfully and easily and then feel but I am totally left out from this and I must be terrible at my job and have these Imposter syndrome moment so yeah, it's a place where some very senior names have come and talk incredibly candidly about their careers and the think they faced for other people.

And feel better about themselves, but also learn how to handle the difficulties and also all the details are in the show notes of global leadership for kantor exchange.

Hi Jane how are you? I'm very good.

Thank you.

So we can talk about your Media reactions research a little bit later on but come on the voice that give us give us one while statistic.

What's it? What's what's a surprise you when you go to the cross Labs looking at the day to this year surprising thing was probably that the number one channel for consumers in terms of where they like marketing activity and advertising is actually sponsored events at the top five preferences among consumers out-of-home channels like digital out of home cinema ads and point-of-sale so well consumers.

Love all that the top five for marketers are all digital channel.

Weather accept advertising so you've got this complete mismatch literally in the top five little later on first number one and a big story has been the news that Mark Thompson BBC the BBC New York Times is taking over at CNN a surprise to many mentioned this before and you can see why they chose it Jane Thompsons decided to put the power Pitsea then he's been in many challenging roles before and he's been in many roles where the job is to bring forward a kind of Legacy organisation track them kicking and screaming into a into a digital world exactly exactly.

A period with a CEO who like did not do the right thing who left under under a bit of a cloud try to drag them to be more right.

We had a bit of a rebellion a mutiny almost from some of the people who work there so like it's a problem.

It's a problem and you know from what I know Mark Thompson is good at sorting everything out.

I think the other thing is you know all CEO roles now.

They have to be like really good on the strategy may also have to be really good on the execution and possibly in a new dimension which is they also have to be really good at people and that's diametrically opposed to pats and also old-school CEO profile, so it strikes me the Mark Thompson has obviously all the attributes to do this and he's obviously also got the interest in doing a really difficult.

66 which I think is brilliant and you know if companies make mistakes in hiring the wrong CEO it can set an organisation back not by Me by years in a crucial time so stuck with all of these changes we had one of those governed by the 18th so uncertain about the ownership.

They had crystal Lake to was interesting choice and relatively positive when he started but it went downhill very quickly turn like a Warner Brothers directing some stuff for some stuff coming from cross-linked and I stuck in the middle.

I mean is is staff relations hire at Marks list or is he going to be looking at the things? I was going to say as well.

I feel like with my head hunting hat on.

I absolutely would have approached him about this role.

It is I think he's an absolute dream for them.

And from what we know his leadership skills are brilliant and he said that he's going to spend the first couple of months listening and learning and you know not just gunning whatever he thinks they should do straight off the bat so I think that that will be music to to the teams ears and yeah, I mean he's had his first ups and downs but I think you know with CNN being described as a legacy Media brand but with a messy digital strategy.

I think saying as he was credited with the iPlayer before you Netflix he's got a really brilliant chance of help you discover what it is again.

I mean I don't even really have a sense of what CNN is all wants to be anyway for me.

It's sort of it's just use Joseph's channel at feels quite dry with these allegations of bias.

So would it be making more premium content and you know?

He can now that's a lot of challenges for the brand is going to amazing Brand level knows what it is.

Ceiling.com is one of the biggest websites in the world of to get talked about ever live in America with the domestic TV channel and who's on prime-time to hundreds of thousands of the ratings for all the cable news channels are quite small in in the States so made you think it's Focus perhaps might not be broadcast where was assessed with well.

Everyone is obsessed with broadcast but also is everybody knows on the other side of the fence.

I have the challenge of how do you get your digital revenues to to match your cost in an increasingly digital world and Mark had a huge success of the New York Times in developing a subscription offer making that profitable making that one of the only successful subscription operations globally and so he's got very good form in that regard, so

Sending you know Advertiser Revenue and the changes that are going on there is is really important.

It is all of them money comes from cable TV cable companies have to pay CNN at a certain price per subscriber that they watch or not saying for Fox News MSNBC of cash that comes in your products.

Yes exactly and and also the questions are is that is that you know revenue reliable in a can of general area of Pat declining hearing among audiences, so I think the you know the challenge really will be to you know what I said before dragging them into a digital age in and maintaining revenues and growing the district will be a priority.

I'm so I have respect for the guy.

I mean who would take that and he's going to do anything close to his in acquiring word.

Also also apparently you can cook you know like he's multi-talented date with what marks.

Do you think he was in at CNN on Tuesday this week, so it's already in early start of next month ok on Facebook and sticking with news and matter has close the tabs on Facebook news, and what new stories are going to be still alive with course in people's feeds the Tech giant to know when we're going to pay UK news outlets for featuring their stories Jane what were they doing? Where are they now? Well, you know the introduction of these separate Tab 4 News was I get a risk that meta 2 on the Facebook app to presumably try and separate the commercial realities of the news and the consumer content but also from a user.

Encourage more people to post their own social context impacts of time when they were stopping doing that so much and I think you know that the news battle have been going on for quite a long time in regards to who pays hoover news.

There was a bit of a standoff in Australia a few years ago about that sort of money to just stay quiet and just because there was a bit of an industry standoff, but you know what is we all get on news from other places now as well.

We go to Exhall we go to other all we know original mediabrands and look at our news for Facebook isn't necessarily the place.

Naturally go to for news, so I think it's not only a set of Strategic and revenue decision, but it's also it's only just left half of them.

Do you think do you think the big tech companies Google and Facebook to have to cut a a new tax and advertising you come to my attention if you want good stuff in using inside and investigations.

They're the ones that should pay for it and it is getting harder to figure out.

What news is reliable and trustworthy person.

I can't say I would miss the news have on Facebook but it is it's a great area about who should pay for it all and I mean.

Play people across because meta Facebook used to say that you have local newspapers and using these journalists in the field at the lifeblood of Communities we want that organic content from the ground and I just pulled it, but I also don't think it's terrible decision either and everyone has got a cut costs and it will make people more Japan aerial.

This is also this is the closure of the news project newsquest our participants sold prices at this week.

This is going to call me from a company that takes building £2 from the UK advertising market and built their Facebook platform in part by freeriding the content the news publishers provide issues in Cala don't try to eat the Australian model and they pulled all news from from Facebook have they got ok if we're not going to play by those rules the government has added some some new laws into to force them to do something so they pulled news from the platform.

Will stop but I think it's also something that speaks to you.

What is Facebook's positioning? What is Facebook the app for now? There are various elements that they've undertaken confidence from Facebook because they have been through the MB of post-election and trump and bias and Cambridge and everything actually do they feel a bit more confident? They don't need to pay off the new properties anymore.

That's a possibility and I also think it is you know it's Focus in 0yy.

Keep going down one root when it causes your nothing back hassle, you know public communication issues, and you know possibly reputation damaging problems as well so maybe it's just simpler without it anymore.

Switch on the market advertise to use it so I have no idea where it's going, but it's still a hugely popular Channel 4 advertising because it still gets big reach you know there's a mismatch their products for Instagram for the younger and you got WhatsApp threads and they call Facebook blue.

I think internally the big blue.

What colour goes where sticking to news and deadline reports that the BBC's kidneys options open when it comes to General Election coverage in the wake of the Hugh Edwards and also she hasn't with present the election.

He is unwell at the moment.

So if there was a snap election tomorrow probably wouldn't be around for it even as we going to next year is he going to be around is going to be employed by the BBC what's going to happen with that Kimberly who would you like to see Inca the BBC election coverage anyway the jumps to mind so much cooler and more fun.

Rupaul's election race would be good be certainly different is actually my hero.

I think he's super talented.

I'm missing a few weeks ago in connection with trick awards and he is.

I think one of the really solid and credible presenters with gravitas.

He's also got a sense of humour and he's he's adaptable as well because he does that you know he can do a quiz show he can read news he can be in a warzone.

Why wouldn't you have somebody like this who you know he's more later, but I think then Pat the very serious slightly older school kind of political reporters.

I think he could he's great.

What's the role of the job of this research this research is to examine the question of medium being the message so we talk a lot in research in advertising about the importance of good creative.

Yeah.

Good ads.

Good content whether it's influencer content or tea.

Audio advertising we don't talk enough about the qualities of the media channels that they sit on and the media Brands and what consumers think of those so when we look at I'll meet you reactions study, we surveyed 16000 consumers in 23 markets and also 900mah as well, but we asking the questions about channels and brands and we asked them to rate them on a number of dimensions both positive and negative so what do you think about advertising on this channel? And you know is it dull and boring is it fun and informative is it excessively frequent it overly targeted so we are all these positive and negative opinions and then we can say which ones stuck-up better against the others and we done it as I said in 23 kits and in those markets.

We look at local brands as well as global brands and then we'll add her that up at a global level both online and offline channels and markets and market a lot.

Yes in local markets you often see that local publications come out either number one or number two and some of the global ones are in there as well, but in terms of actual Media channels and there is quite a lot of consistency around the world you know about what people think about events and TV and you know and channels as well, but as I said in the interesting thing is there's this massive divergence between what consumers think and what market is think about outdoor also online.to yes sort of Remains the marketeers darling.

Yes, and you know that's you know in a way.

I suppose it's like the sexy way of getting reach nowadays because marks and focus is on digital channels are still growing even if it's a slightly declining rates since last year we also asked market is what they plan spend intentions are by Channel 4 2024.

we write that is like you know the net positives of the negatives and the top-10 stated channels by marketers for growth next year are all digital including podcasts is online but you've got things like influencer marketing in their podcast social media channels stories appear quite highly as well metaverses gone down drastically since this as we think you know and there are other things that are happening as well like you know TV has gone down in terms of its its preference among market is because it's losing its of maths reach the sexiest thing she's not quite sexy and it's a combination of things and it's more about what is top of marketers Minds

And what type of market is Minds appears to be a whole host of digital channels and marketers are whether we like it or not attracted by new and shiny things as well so right up there for marketing channels on YouTube Google Instagram tiktok and Spotify you know I'm on consumers are on at them on the digital channels.

They they really like Amazon but the sizing on Amazon and the reason for that is because it's relevant and is not that TV is performing particularly badly.

It's just the other channels are viewed positively slightly more with their own players.

Is quite like the video streaming God's great? Yeah, so which is why when they look at you know consumer channels all the offline ones that they can experience in real life more immersive things and it is exactly it's to do with control so digital ads.

You know I think they are getting better, but there's still quite a lot of pop-ups and sort of things you have to click an exon and you know I think it's you know but having said that influencer advertising performs.

Ok and one consumer.

Series is the new a form and tiktok advertising it is like buy them as well.

So I think it's to do with the maps.

So evil hasn't killed off social media yet, then ex hasn't performed very well in this year in in terms of the brand rankings and when was when was the field work for?

It was April May this year and during during the Elon Elon period and my advertisers that there seems to be a trust issue and marketers next year on you know 7dz, ask about xx I still can't believe you me and podcasts also growing but had a bit of a wobble much like many packs offline brands to be offline audio.

Generally is still like you know and Spotify has performed well as well in in the rankings, but I'm on audio yet podcast the thing that you know Mark just want to spend more on next year.

I think you know the evergreen challenges not whether you do it or not is how you do it and then whether it's impact for but we do now.

Is that if you advertise on those channels knows brands that consumers like and they have a preference for the add 10 to perform better in your interest as a marketer understand what consumers think when you have time jobs in your reaching a group of people that want to hear about virginities.

Is there a shift on where those weather communications.

Go away you find your photos yeah? Yeah, that's an interesting question because we know a lot of people in the TV industry advertise their jobs including us from 5% on Facebook inside groups but not paid ads.

I think it's more about community 440v LinkedIn will always be a good place to advertise it more so I think for creative people.

I think think is incredibly exciting place to be talking.

Rising and people used to think it was drunk or and boring it really isn't that now, but I think the effectiveness of advertising comes down a lot to do with Trust I mean a lot of that is what Jane is saying hurry talks about and relevance but it's also that expectations.

I think podcasting advert advertising is accepted because podcasts are still relatively new and for it sort of just happened that you expect it to be a because they're always has been where is YouTube video streaming advertise.

It is so annoying because it never used to be there certainly not at the top and now I've got to add but I can't wait press that button as soon as possible to change as a as a YouTube channel owner I got an email from this.

Week's a side when the adverts go and it's like and it's ok.

We learn you make more money if you leave it to us and I'm a basic don't remove the things that we quite like here is also a bit of

People's perceptions changes their own media consumption habits change to so if you're much more comfortable living in LinkedIn actually then that advertising destination works for you bit more home place to exist.

I think it's about community and trust so you're going to see if you're going to accept it going to take it a face value.

Where is something is being served up to me just because you know I'm at the time then I won't like it on react adversely to it.

I guess the you know one good example.

Is that you know the ads have to tie in the type of channel that it is Sophie look at something like TiK ToK we done loads of research which shows that the more you customise your add to the Channel and you know all the advantages that the technology the music backgrounds the editing techniques all that kind of thing you make it fun and entertaining because that's what the channel is about they are more impactful.

So you're out.

You have to come to lean into what that channel is about and do it in the right way for your brand but also for the consumers and Spotify hasn't advertising 16 Spotify and had ignored by criminals and if you saw this this week in Sweden of course.

It would be Sweden my Spotify comes from they want a launder their money and rather than follow Breaking Bad and opening a nail shop or something like that.

What they've done is they've released music on Spotify paid the Wells to basically play on all the streams and then claim the cash back from Daniel S and Spotify which is amazing story Spotify say that they don't think this is true though.

We definitely do.

Play not fair play to criminals fair.

Play to you know few years ago.

We were talking about click farms where people would just click on things to to boost click crates.

It's kind of click farms.

You know 2.0.

I think we're experiencing here and it's like a great idea for a crime, but you know all of the stories are there is no evidence that is happening so it could be entirely fictional who knows around Spotify people putting white noise on there and taking the add money from it big pool of cash that gets distributed in a variety of different ways that annoys everybody so if you can find an angle finding Edge get some of that good cash in your pocket.

A whole new world to me, so there's a hole in the content of twice-yearly look amazing things were doing that look forward to like the VP of artists.

It's pretty good split.

Ok.

There's just enough time for the media quiz this week.

It's all about the National Television Awards what normally happens is the media industry come with the shortlist and the public themselves.

They get to vote for the winners.

So just give everyone a breast of what the public think I'm going to name the category and to shortlisted shows you just have to tell me who won who we think one who we would have preferred to.

Right here, we go question number one best day time was it the repair shop or this morning the repair shop? It was repair shop.

They want at the expense of this morning fireworks this year.

What's not to like me we don't have to put up with the dreadful.

We're all hungover on This Morning gag.

They do every year after the blue sports entertainment Awards who won it Ant and Dec or Gogglebox Gogglebox 10-years this year, but don't feel too sorry for Ant and Dec they did come away with their 44th NTA award at this year for best presenters.

Yeah, how do you say I don't know it's like relentless the Ant and Dec that you can refresh work on Gogglebox I think I'll fantastic for the record that while it's every every year as well.

It seems I wouldn't so celebrating 10 years of Gogglebox still a massive massive ratings for Channel 4 bit stuck with it were coming up with it and I was in the kitchen and one of the team would do a small small talk over the kettle boiling Undercover Boss here.

Pitch deck about people who are watching TV show filming the people who watching the TV and we would both like ok move on and have a look what happened some great clips of the international goggleboxers from around the world and lovely to see equivalence everywhere, but it does I'm like it shows it doesn't have reflect.

I think Britain and under the characters that they choose people become invested in but also it is kind of gentle humour as well say it again.

It's a kind of reassuring watch it feels familiar human version of the Anne Robinson points of View number 3 best comedy that go to Ghosts Ted lasso or young Sheldon

Ok, because I was going to say something but I'm not sure about that.

So you should have been who did I mean Ted lasso for the wind personally in the background Scott Brian screaming about ghosts and he was very annoyed that that that doesn't win you back to the public have the public space that me and you know full disclosure I used to chair trick Awards television Radio 3 club and I'm now I'm still on the committee and you know the public vote if that's the right you go down has to win you know and I guess you know there's a reach issue about you know who's going to vote it will be bothered to vote and motivated group the public.

I don't know anybody who is it phone lines online so it's obviously the people who is nominated encourage their fans to vote for them, but obviously somehow biggest ocean which azure can reach out to a different groups in market research.

Obviously we do we do research differently because you look at you know representative populations and demographically waited and all that kind of these Awards you know can't be done like that.

That's too complicated.

So you know it you know it's just how it is nearly dead meat podcast development slates for 2023 20-22 both yesterday.

I work and people keep up with what you're doing you can find me very active on LinkedIn and at telling people that TV and of course the impossible podcasts which is on the usual for this one.

On LinkedIn obviously, I'm active better as well.

I can't aw.com Media reactions is where you can download the booklet that of the research that I was just talking about and yeah, we have a rest as well called future proof which is all about marketing and brand.
