I have long wandered how so many freeview TV stations can be sustained by advertising and how the share of advertising is divided amongst all the freeview operators.

I have often wandered how the system of sustaining all the free to air digital channels by advertising works and is there a single agency which divides all the advertising amongst all the channels?

Nicholas Anderson: Some of the big broadcasters have their own ad sales division (ITV, Channel 4 & Sky) who also sell advertising space for some of the smaller channels (e.g. 4Sales sell ads for the UKTV channels). There are probably numerous agencies involved in selling ad space on some of the smaller channels.
