The Archers scam week. The End of Short …

BBC sounds music Radio podcasts hello, they say imitation is the best form of Flattery for Radio 4 outrage venting is of course feedback who went face with females written in green crayon will summon the producer of the offending program on to try and feedback gets a shoutout on Friday 6:30, but I did the brand new comedy show The Naked week band with listeners yet another Radio 4 programme is facing the this time.

It's shortcuts and what happened to the Archers last week the regular storyline was replaced by one about fraudulent holiday lettings listeners with the ones being scammed Adrian Mortlock I live in Carmarthenshire and West Wales and I would like to report a scam I was under the impression that I was listening to The Archers

We can everyday story of country folk instead.

I paid for being conned because I seem to have been listening to a load of complete rubbish from Preston to be believable last week's episodes of just sort of fantasy if it was in support of the anti scamming we run by Radio 4.

It's been a waste of time last week.

Sorry took a very surprising turn on doing storylines seem to be abandoned in favour of an unfolding holiday.

Let fraud where various strangers turned up to stay at times of ambridge characters after an online scam no sooner had this all-encompassing storyline arrived that seems to have disappeared lasting precisely one and that you might just realised it was BBC's camsafe week.

It was a campaign across all BBC channels and platforms to boost awareness on how the public can keep themselves safe.

But should the Archers have got involved and if so in a week of scam awareness just hi believable was this storyline is Ali Somerville flight I can't be the only long-term matches in snow thinks the latest storyline is beyond ridiculous.

I know BBC is attempting to draw attention to scamming that really three lots of strangers turning up to stay and various non-existent holiday accommodation on the same day in winter in ambridge, Cottage let themselves in Norway to let them stay just for one night while we sorted it all out, but now she's promised them.

They can she didn't have the heart to tell them out themselves and to be fair.

I've been on the site and it is my address on there, although.

The pictures art of the Rookery somebody else's advertising your place is a holiday let you know it yeah, it happens quite a lot they've been had and so bye and to make this even more City we meant to believe that local happily take them in and then put them up in the events barn.

Just days before a big function is to take place there and the visitors.

I completely relax about staying chilli bar with little privacy next to no facilities and with people they don't know madam to Walker Mid Suffolk Needham Market this current week as seen the Archers reduced to fast Frankie groups of random strangers, who did just so happens can be accommodated in a barn people inviting total strangers to occupy their homes as they feed them the village pulling together in a kind of bullets spirit.

Cambridge it's total nonsense I have been listening to the contribution to scan we come the Archers and Away With The Following how to arrange a successful holiday lets can that's cancer fund for the people involved and so not a big deal? I don't think it's a site.

That's the problem, but I've been doing some research this afternoon and apparently.

It's relatively easy for someone to post a fatalistic.

Don't do something about it.

Yes, what can we do get them to take it down good luck with that? I've been trying all day and nothing I think if we want to solve this we're going to have to matters into own hands from London told her she actually enjoyed last week's episodes.

I want to express my appreciation for the heart.

Way in which the Archers played with scam last week not only was helpful and informative that I found the humanity and displayed by David and Kate in particular, but uplifting and sharing so please thank the script writers from the night.

I really did want to talk to somebody from The Archers and we also have anyone would come on today's program to explain what I think was an unprecedented move to devote a whole week to a single topic not related to the ongoing storylines and Andy to answer your criticisms, but nobody was made available the subject was discussed on last week's Archers podcast hosted by Emma Freud on BBC signs when she talked to scriptwriter Sarah McDonald Hughes I know it's all over the BBC at the moment, but why this type of scan for the

What are the types of scams discussed and examples but this one we saw would kind of fit quite well into I'm bleeding that it is this lovely place where people would book a holiday cottage and that although it is all these times are awful.

They have a real terrible impact on people but it is also for other opportunities to tell a story that's ultimately kind of about humanity and people coming together to help each other which felt very Bridge is there anything particular you wanted us to take away from to Cambridge there is there was there a kind of mission statement.

I suppose we just wanted to have high like this.

I didn't know much party at all before we got into this research and their kind of impact of it.

Cos it can seem a little bit you know what important because it's about holidays, but actually there are people who.

M people turned up at their house very regularly it becomes like we can started to suggest with Jakob it becomes like harassment basically, but by somebody who apprehend Sarah McDonald Hughes who wrote last week's episodes speaking on the Archers podcast storyline was neatly tied up by Friday with the scan stranger in a giant sleepover in Brookfield barn.

Celebrating an impromptu Thanksgiving lunch for an American tourist who emigrated from ambridge 60 years ago and as a 5-year old have married Eddie Grundy in the school playground.

Yes really thank you ready.

It will remind Bridge holiday.

You like you to forget it or you it's been eventful perfect.

Yes, everything's gone wrong, but it's more for you than I ever could have helped it really is a special place for the special people from Catford in London wasn't impressed, but she does predict a future storyline.

Yes and bridge in November is a happening place booking dodgy non-existent B&B actually being allowed to stay in people's homes be accepted into the community and getting a Thanksgiving dinner thrown in his surreal.

I think we haven't thought this through and I Predict a shortage of birds for the Christmas customers and if you have use on anything you've heard recently across BBC audio.

Please do get in touch a very easy way to reach us is to send a WhatsApp voice note on 0345 and you can also ring that number and leave a voice.

And you can send us an email to feedback at bbc.co.uk on social media.

It's at BBC R4 feedback walking home alone filled with The Glow of an Evening with friends.

We do Indiana singer on a night walk through the streets of Kiev in Ukraine well.

That was Josie Long presenting the first episode of the final series of Radio 4 shortcuts coming to an end after 12 years.

It's always been highly regarded a month's programme makers and has been a first step from any nice tablet audio producers episode as a theme and a variety of short pieces all put together in a very distinctive style the production company that made the series falling tree has a long history of Supporting New Order

Creative and an open to all approach to stories in the news of its accent came out a few weeks ago in a falling tree social media post films of the show as well as many of those who worked in the past organise an online open letter to the BBC in protest so far over 1400 people have signed it the BBC issued this statement Radio 4 is a and experimental approaches are encouraged given increased financial pressures on the BBC and Radio 4 we have made the difficult decision not recommissioned shortcuts.

We thank the team and contributors behind shortcuts for the brilliant content they brought to listeners over the past 12 years however we recognise that it is vital that new produces specifically in the UK have a space to develop their craft and short form is important in this respect as a result we will expand BBC sounds audio lab to include new short form commissions.

Specifically with uk-based audio producers and featured in a sound collection in addition.

There will be an opportunity for the best of these ideas to be developed into features on Radio 4 listen Charlotte pets, who is the producer join me earlier this week along with Talia of a status a shortcut saloon.

I and one of the organisers of the Open Letter I asked earlier.

What was about shortcuts that made it so important.

I think it can't really be boiled down to one thing I think shortcuts ultimately is a space for makers new and established try interesting different things that they can't really try elsewhere.

I think broadly to its its listeners, and it's producer listeners especially it's sort of a symbol that there is a place to get paid to make creative work like this and they're really isn't elsewhere other than shortcuts.

I wish I could make h a v like happiness and others good things about love.

I don't know everything in the world war but as soon as it already here.

This is my language so I took.

These days is it might be 50 minutes long is mainly half an hour long or even longer shortcuts.

It's very small pieces of audio.

What's the importance of that? What's the difference not all story can be told in half an hour or big 12-ft series like the BBC often once but that doesn't mean that they're not important.

I think just different stories have different sizes and shapes and they have been some really incredible stories told on shortcuts in less than 10 minutes.

Wouldn't work as a 30-minute feature it would feel to spacious too long, but still should be told and also it's so much easier for me let say you are working with new producers is less intimidating.

It's easier to start with less than 10 minutes.

Sewing in many ways it works as a format and it doesn't exist elsewhere on the BBC and you produce.

Is there any shortcuts has given many young radio and audio produces the opportunity to have work hard on earth.

How much does the opportunity afforded by shortcuts matter to people that are just starting out in the business.

I mean it was the first ever pablos was my shortcuts peace shortcut keys.

I'm a cold checking ones levels and I was a residential care at the time.

Just trying to make it into audio.

I had made one piece not got it broadcast or published anywhere and I put shortcuts and they didn't think definitely didn't know who I was they didn't know my name.

All I said was too short paragraphs and they believed in the idea that they believe me and that was amazing.

I literally have a recording on my recorder of me listening to it broadcast on the radio for the first time and I'm just so giddy and excited and

You did that that was such an affirmation for me that this is the right place and I got paid to make it and it went on to win an award and it went on to other automakers and collaborators in this news and it was a really amazing opportunity and from the Open Letter I mean so many of the testimonials say the same thing about how much it the Charlotte you got in touch with us as a listener and then we noticed that you were also an audio producer and you've gone and words as well.

What what does shortcuts mean to you? It's made challenge how you can tell a story because you can do it in such a short amount of time and people doing so many different ways it really makes you look it kind of different narrative structures and how sound design you so brilliantly and so wonderfully to enhance and tell stories in danger of having extremely beige audio landscape.

It's because you know I think if you're not in true Crime

You know some celebrity podcast talking about crisps or something you know it's like wearing these things getting made a wonder what you would say to the criticism that this is this is wonderful for people who are starting an audio book for listeners.

It's a rather niche people listen to it.

Won't in audio production of people after I've said you've got to listen to this.

It's really different and and then people you know they disappear.

I just disappeared off into this story and you know so I think it's one that you can put your headphones different worlds and I don't I don't know why that is niche really.

I think it's just that we don't get much exposure to it anywhere else so probably because it's not on anywhere else.

I mean I run listening events which are for the public and I often Play shortcuts pieces and they really blow people's Minds

The I think it's easy for someone maybe not familiar with the show to dismiss.

It is sort of like just sounder or personal things not that should be dismissed anyway, but really there is no one style to shortcuts some of them.

Are you know straight audio documentary some of them are just sound and the rest that everything in between and I really don't think that these stories are no cover really broad and topical things things like institutional racism and climate change and grief and personal experiences as well.

I think you don't think it's a niche when it's so expensive in what explodes and covers and the styles that represents wealth of people who do say that shortcuts is rather niche and maybe the Producers but not always accessible to the listeners.

We've had Steph from Bromley who has nothing but praise for the program.

I wanted to write and let you know that I am to hear about the end of.

Cats podcast I found shortcuts to one of the most beautiful creative and diverse podcast available the team is always brought such an incredible array of materials of the podcast and a loud voice is not heard another place to have centre Stage example.

I've never seen stories of Somali people and particularly Somali women brought to life in the way that shortcuts have not just once but multiple times from water to weddings in a last two words today is a wonderful way of understanding part of my partner's heritage which I'm not able to access otherwise ok, we're gonna do it in English do you prefer English or Somali were audio like yours can be hard.

I mean Radio 4 may say that the Knight series illuminated will provide these opportunities.

It is a new series.

So it's still sort of finding its feet but there are some really brilliant documentaries on their due to a recent.

On the heroin trade in London was fantastic, but I think that again that's for half an hour documentaries and as I said not every idea can be half an hour and I mean I can pretty category they say that no there aren't other page spaces to make sure work like this BBC also mentions that there is the BBC signs audiolab will include new short form commissions and is that a good replacement as it is it a good enough replacement for short? No, I don't think so honestly.

I think I think it shouldn't be placement.

I think it's a great scheme.

It's a great initiative audio Labs already does amazing things for a select few craters in the the series that they create but I think the BBC in the reply to the Open Letter was missing the point and it was really focusing on just UK new producers which is reducing the scope of the stories as you just mentioned this dimension stories from Somalia you would.

Just to finally but to both of you that the 12 years of shortcuts has created a legacy that will continue even if we lose shortcuts today.

Yeah, I do but I also think audios a medium doesn't really respect archive in the way the other mediums do like film archive is so integrated into the film and I don't think I think audio has a much shorter memory and so I do worry that shortcuts within a few years will be forgotten and I think that's it's really important that you know it's not it's not coming back the BBC are strong on that point but maybe we can do is try and make sure it's remembered for what it was.

Yeah.

I mean I'm glad it's a 250 episodes or something that's out there, but yeah, I just won't be anymore because there's so much that is so they make current content as it's reflections on things that.

Listening to people now and I just said yeah.

I think it's going to be a great loss and it's a sad decision Talia August and Charlotte but thank you for giving us your thoughts on that decision to end Radio 4 shortcuts for a lot of you have got in touch to tell us.

I disappointed you only lasted for 4 weeks.

It's replacement is a brand new show called the naked week told us how much he enjoyed I am Glenesk a broken and I'm from Bury in Greater Manchester forward to the naked week.

That's definitely going to be my bedtime listening on a Friday evening programme Greatest Dancer series looking forward to the next episodes great writers great production crew and just brilliant listening on a Friday night, but the rest of you were less impressed and

Steering the worst house to Andrew Hunter Murray got in before us on Friday show now.

See you in the week is new to this Friday night radio four parts.

We are all braced for the inevitable backlash from people who everything to stay exactly the same all the time forever.

I'm sorry Robinson York boring boring boring summer power feel about that program.

So boring I said through the full 30 minutes, but my husband stopped listening after 10 now.

We're all busy people and sent him what's going to happen come Monday we have decided to get out of the car and have a producer John Holmes 3 respond to your view Peugeot 5 CC plascrug living in south west France switched off after 12 minutes nothing at all.

Has been even marzia music let alone funny.

Hi, this is Mark from Gloucestershire I've been a fan of Friday Night Comedy for some years, but I was particularly unimpressed with the naked this week the presenters interpretation of satire seems to be simply an opportunity for him to reflect his political beliefs in particular is joke regarding the term cock and linking it to unfair treatment of people of Colour by the police was offensive not satire.

Please.

Can you find something funny for Friday night's thank you for the good work, but this needs sorting John what would you say to the accusation of the naked week is a typical so-called excuse for a typical so-called BBC so-called satirical comedy.

Nearest Roy Coalville from Plymouth in this day and age is good to discover that the trusted BBC continues to broadcast truth including in the comedy slot at 6:30 on Friday then Radio 4 presenter playing people would write in and say it's not as good as dead ringers.

That's true.

It isn't is good, but it got a lot better after that sketch.

I wonder was that intentional strategy to ensure only the most stubborn Radio 4 listen that far were awarded by finding ourselves the object of the satire to which we have been looking forward to all day.

Well.

It is still early days for the naked week, but very soon in life dating art I really will be speaking to the producer on feedback because on our last feedback Before Christmas I'll be talking to Julia McKenzie the commissioning editor of comedy and entertainment Radio 4 and John Holmes is produced many comedies for Radio 4 including the naked week.

So please do send me your thoughts on what you would like me to ask.

Recently Michelle Hussain was surprised by her today co-host Nick Robinson it was the morning after she received the child's Wheeler Award for her outstanding contribution to journalism the time is now 22 minutes to say something now, but we're going to say something about her instead and she doesn't know this because last night Michelle and sadly I couldn't be there had a rather exciting evening she won the Charles Wheeler Award for outstanding contribution to broadcast journalism.

Just wanted to pay our own tribute to the shell on the programme this morning or just a few weeks after that Kinder Surprise announcement that Michelle is to leave not just a program but the BBC during the past week.

You've been contacting us with your reaction to the news that Michelle is leaving for the past 11 years.

She's been a stalwart of today as well as presenting across radio and Teller

Should be missed by many listeners a quick word to wish Michelle Hussain well for her next Media roll, my name is Peter Peter newborn, and I live in Twickenham South London over the many years of listening to you Michelle on the Today programme.

I have been very struck by and much appreciated the way you seem to manage to achieve depth and rigour in the interviews you can talk to it at the same time as been calm and respectful towards the interviewees the Midwives is that a yes Ltd architect in limited numbers in limited numbers of Michelle Hussain is a huge loss in my opinion.

She's always exceptionally well briefed persistent yet polite with a voice which is very easy to listen to.

Many politicians will be delighted that she's going as they have to be absolutely at the top of their game when interviewed by her mobile arrivals did come down this year or a record-high small than 13000 people.

Have you lost control as I said hello my name is Zoe calling from Worcestershire I wanted to express my regret at the departure of Michelle Hussain from the BBC and of course to wish her well in her new role.

Elsewhere my question is the what on earth is the BBC doing in failing to retain such a Stella professional in my view Michelle is a presenter of the highest quality.

There are few.

If any who can match her and analytical interview technique the fluidity and clarity of her speech and her command of the English language over breakfast tables in cars in showers, who knows where?

There are millions of people just now same here to that well done enough is normally very good for a few weeks, but that's it for this week for me and the team.

Thank you for listening and for giving us your feedback to buy hi.
