Radio 4's The Patch. What's up Docs. Add…

BBC sounds music Radio podcasts this week feedback is full of surprises the please you find using a random postcode generator or even just turning on the radio and a random time and the much child new health show WhatsApp docks has elicited quite a response from listeners.

I'll be putting some of your questions and comments to the person who commissioned at Rhian Roberts last week.

I talked to the world at one Sarah Montague about her recent jaw-dropping encounter with trump aide Sebastian gorka stage propaganda.

Which is what you guys.

Do it almost made it easier because you just feel that you put on your flight jacket men's your comments keep on.

Phil Burgess in North Devon having just listen to your interview with Sarah Montague concerning her encounter with Trump's Douglas sidekick, Sebastian gorka.

I just wanted to add my own is an appreciation for the way that she handled the interview what a professional thank God for the BBC and its journalists in today's post trees age, but it wasn't prayers alright Keith anyone first name used for that are coverage on feedback itself was typical of BBC bias.

Just as I expected even feedback is inflicted with a regular BBC by which is so prevalent in its programs all contributors apparently in favour of poor Sarah Montague so permit me to slightly restore balance.

I hold up any hope of you broadcasting it.

I was driving home when I heard the interview and I was cheering Mr Gore all the way many of us are increasingly sick of hearing the incest.

Anti-israel anti-trump ranting on all BBC programmes inevitable sympathetic to those poor Palestinians in Gaza and in recent days similarly even to the Citizens of Iran but I think it is important to point out that feedback didn't include any negative comments about Sarah Montagues interview last week, but this simple reason we didn't receive any of the escalating situation in the Middle East this week BBC News teams that have given an extensive coverage, but are they getting it right listen Estella sending this know that concerned just too too many complaints you may be having about the news at the moment.

I think the BBC jumps promiscuous Lee from one subject to the next one so we forgotten about Ukraine on the soldiers of both sides of that conflict we forgotten about the people in the west bank being.

Out of their homes and we've forgotten the people starving in Gaza we forgotten Congo we've gotten Sudan it's very one-sided regarding the news.

Thank you very much goodbye.

Well as I mentioned on last week's program.

We are having an in-depth.

Look at news coverage in a later episode including balancing act about what to cover when events which are all worthy of attention or happening thick and fast around the world and as ever I would love to hear your thoughts the easiest way to contact feedback is to send a voice note on WhatsApp the number is 0333 444 5000 you can ring the same number leave a voice message the number again 0345 by email it's free.

Bbc.co.uk and it's at BBC R4 feedback on social media if you want an antidote to listening to the seismic events on folding daily on the news and frankly who doesn't I can warmly recommend some audio escapism in the form of Radio 4 programme The Patch each week, collyweston.

Turns in a randomly selected postcode anywhere in the UK and find stories and Mum the people and places she discovers since 2018 have been 238 reporting on Warren cricket clubs Falcon breeding for Middle Eastern billionaire's and even serious crimes such as well.

I'll be talking to Polly in just a few minutes, but first we wonder what people you actually live in the postcodes recently featured on the patch think about.

Hi there home was represented entering the feedback box box room this week.

I two listeners from opposite ends of the

Charlie and Jack I live 632 miles apart.

I'm Charlie I run time right exploring outdoor activity business and I live in Gaelic and I live in Broughton I'm a graphic designer and I run a brand design agency called I have design school which struck me as particularly memorable do schools America here and now I'm responsible for 75% of the children in the area snapshot into the issues in Gaelic depopulation, but I guess it's more changing demographic.

You know a lot of the villagers.

Have a pretty study population.

That is just the demographic that's changing and the knock-on effect that has no on the schools and the villages and it all comes down to housing a lot of it.

I think that aspect the term Charlie picked up on there was he know it from programme was very poignant.

And yeah, I'm quite sad really that it needs these important bits of infrastructure to attract people the restore all window into 3 at one point that time you know you're you're getting really worried about about the schools future because if you lose the school he leaves the village no one loves move here, so not a primary school episode of patch was quite relevant to my experiences of living in Gaelic I've left her flat 10 years and I think you know I moved it for the nature for the outdoors for the climbing and kind of staff and my priorities have changed now.

I've got a child and it's so much for being concerned about the housing and the schools and I think that the episode really encapsulated all of that I guess the Word comparisons between you know Broughton and garlic.

There are people attracted to be in Broughton are attracted.

There is that Paul the most famous change with 10 years ago when an

National Art Gallery the world's most powerful commercial art gallery according to an article I read how the and Wirth decided to set up shop hear you make something which is attractive and people inevitable y that has an effect on the economy in house prices and will be the one to go there and so on tick is interesting isn't it like when an area develops and something changes and people are attracted to what kind of people are you chatting? You know are you attractive young families in which case you know the area is going to strive or are you attracting second home owners and that's essentially Colwyn community.

I don't need anything drastic.

It has changed and I locked it.

You know it's not like Broughton where you have that kind of Gallery opening up.

You know you create a group on there instead of coming they moved to Broughton when their daughter was born because all the good schools around here and because Danielle hated London what seem to come across a little bit too was there.

Disparaging in come down from Londoners or otherwise known as DFL as I think that was a little bit hard to listen to given the amount of energy and great people who come in and that new blood has changed things significantly invested into the town that made the buildings better and I did the opportunity for Great restaurants and bars and other aspects which make living in the town better.

That's interesting what you saying about the mean.

I really like Ken as an interviewee pretty amazed at his acceptance especially with when he talks about his with his brother's house that got me and just totally to Guinness tried and I thought that was pretty amazing, but they're lovely couple he was being a godson to the town because he's taking over the poppy collection.

This was why can made such an impression on me.

This is why the town made such an impression an attitude which said I choose to see the good.

I think that singers People moving in and changing things is apparent here as well and I think there's a really interesting line between people wanting to protect where they live for the reasons.

Why they moved there and change for the better.

I'm not sure that right is but I guess it's different for everyone.

Can you can you see the website now postcode generator? I love the randomness the slightly digital dad are asked of a postcode generator Siri on brand For You Know Radio 4 to to give that's up to the regions in many ways and I like that and it does yeah.

It does get opportunity to go into.

He might not ordinarily do so Jack after listening to that episodi tempted to come together.

Yes, I am it's quite a long way, but I have a motor can one of my ambitions is to go to the Highlands and to ride around there, but I'm still trying to work out the logistics and get the time to do it, but thank you for their take on the patch and I'm really pleased to welcome to the programme the presenter and producer of the patch collyweston.

You heard the box box there.

What do you think about very very lovely day here.

I think the biggest thing and it sounds daft, but they're Jack and Charlie could could see their communities in the obviously I go to to these places generally as a complete stranger with no knowledge of the place at all and so when you get a response.

I do my very best to make sure that is very transparent and it's very much.

I sort of two-way conversation between community and myself are very involved in the whole process of putting it together, but still those that moment when it goes out where you think is this going to feel like a true reflection of this place and so for me.

That's the biggest thing is that both of them felt satisfied in that they didn't mention I think that Broughton that it was a little bit of a hard listen to hear that those down from London area taking over the place a little bit when they felt that they were actually putting a lot into it.

So you've obviously got to Trevor and narrow line between journalism and also reflecting the place positively and it is that sense that Britain's animazing place one of the interesting things than me about Britain was that lot of people I met initially where people who derived within the

And so in so when you have that situation it feels very very important to do my very best to sort of look behind that and and find the people who different perspectives about a place that you're not just getting one perfect Yvonne that place.

I think one of solicitors there.

I said I think I used the phrase stop to the regions about the patch saying that is very on Radio 4.

I wonder how you see it.

I'd like to think that we are doing our very best to represent every part of this country and it can be sometimes.

You know it's up to the regions almost sounds like it's lip service but actually I think it's at the beating heart of what we do.

I just have to ask you this Holly the program makes a feature of a random generator taking you to the next location.

Is it really random or do you organise it so you get a couple of decent spread of locations to the i2 series.

I'm so pleased they've been the same number of postcodes generated as there has been programmed.

Yeah absolutely no control over it whatsoever and to be honest if you did try to I think it would diminish some of the satisfaction and joy in the series The Patch even in the name.

It says it's going to place that we really hear about international media, but I find that the programs are often so compelling because of the people there is no universality about people's experience isn't there definitely I think that is the gift of the program really well, obviously looking for a story that's going to unfold and be compelling over the course of the 40 minutes, but you're not go with an issue.

You're going in looking for people to tell you about their lives than along the way they probably going to introduce you to stories that have got national residents or maybe there just after.

Because they are human experiences that we relate to you know on a on a very basic level collyweston.

Thank you and of course those episodes of the patch and many more are available to listen to on BBC sounds.

Not there has been a flurry of feedback about a new health programme Radio 4 podcast and broadcast WhatsApp docks it was launched in March with twin Brothers doctors Chris and Xander van tulleken who said their mission is to help us take better care of ourselves.

No, it was heavily promoted some say to her so there was an error of anticipation well around it doesn't episodes in and with as many extra doctor's notes episodes exclusive to BBC signs and a pattern of comments the banter between the brothers is just too much for many listeners.

You're listening to WhatsApp docs I'm a voice your hearing is Dr Chris van tulleken.

Twin brother with quite a similar voice Marco giacomini from Sean in Kent listening to WhatsApp docks protein are you getting enough really interest in the subject matter and no the dots candle.

He likes me to do my wife is read her to sleep and I feel like I have a kind of superpower doing this so I would say within 30-seconds.

I could hear the the breathing change like she's out the start of the day.

Show is a bit cringeworthy nearly 10 minutes of the chaps having it was a bit too much for me.

Are there any 4:30 slot my point is that in bed with my wife putting her to sleep? It's great, but if you put me on the airwaves that same thing is like you can use it for good or evil and my what is am I safe to be on the radio iTune back in after the pain and having a joint fascinating shows sense of advice about protein supplements the do's and don'ts suggest say in your name.

Please Sarah Callaghan London Borough of Richmond to be compelled to write to program.

Such as feedback at listening to the two brothers on WhatsApp talk just now I did not make for good listening and annoyed me sufficiently is writing to you.

You remember a moment where we thought we should be doctor's because you wanted to be a fighter pilot and f-18 Hornet that was the coldest place themselves by referring to bed, Wymondham so nobody cares except for another probably it seems at this nusp and they're both happened to be doctors, but the comments have a door be negative my name is Peter from Bournemouth I think whatsapp.is a terrific regular listen twin brother presenters have great chemistry and a consummate communicators and it's a conversation funny that intelligent and insightful exploration of health and wellness.

Mine's hello feedback, my name is Dr Rachel Turner I'm finding it really enjoyable.

I love their relaxed style and the way they bounce off each other and the rigorous way that they interviewed guest about their subject.

I particularly enjoyed the episode on willpower we talked about willpower in Whatsapp docks our first episode.

I thought it was a fantastic first episode because for me it totally upended what I think about willpower and enjoy the recent one on smiling and I thought it was very clever.

How Christmas and showed and demonstrated how to critically appraise research in such a light-hearted but very rigorous way.

I'm not saying that if our audience for Smiles that it won't make them happy.

I want to see some reggae Chris Rea is my middle name Gerald is your middle name ok well so much comment.

I don't know it's time to get Rhian Roberts

For a podcast and format is responsible for commissioning WhatsApp docks in for a consultation Rhian welcome, I have to say we have had a lot of complaints about the style is podcast particularly the banter between the two brothers which takes up a significant chunk at the beginning of each program.

Just a few of the adjectives from listeners cringeworthy self-absorbed indulgent just plain, what's your response? I would say that for all those complaints people are listening to the show her an awful.

Lot of people are enjoying it.

I'd say it's probably fastest-growing podcast on BBC sounds at the moment.

It's been a tremendous success, but let's just just taking those comments.

There are lots of different ways to get health and science information on Radio 4 and some people like it delivered in a very matter-of-fact way and we've got programs like an Inside Science inside Health that deliver.

In that kind of way, but we're trying to do something different with this particular show you know we set out to make a very warm and engaging program and so it does have a different tone and Sensibility about it, but you can see that as well in the way of making history when you can have in our time or you can have your dad to me, so we like to think that we're creating programs in general in the tones and styles that will suit all Richard Mendel have to say I'm writing to let you know that I'm disappointed with this series.

I've listened to several of the programs for me at the Essential point is that the WhatsApp dogs should be more about education learning and personal development and less about entertainment comedy and the preoccupation of the presenters the first in the series.

How important is willpower was awful simplistic banal and just not funny.

I had to force myself to Southwell at the willpower not to turn it off Rhian

Richard just don't listen to WhatsApp docs listen to something else now.

I want Richard to listen to every single episode of WhatsApp dogs and the companion piece that you can find on BBC sounds called doctor's note and it may be that if he gives doctor's notes a bit of a listen.

He'll get that deep dive that I think he's after there is no plan to turn down the banter.

I think if you invite twin doctors Chris and who have had so much success with shows like operation Ouch and are so popular you are not going to ask them to front health and wellbeing show and ask them to behave in a different way, so it's an intense approach to making that kind of subject accessible friendly engaging and as I say the numbers are so good.

There are a lot of listeners out there who are enjoying another complaint is about discussions that are almost exclusively focused on men Megan Elias about an episode on testosterone replacement therapy what an incredible ways of.

Two overexcited self-absorbed presenters, they talked about themselves and just general chat then about the subject and the subject itself was woefully explored it exclusively focused on men with nothing but a cursory mention that it was relevant to women massively missed opportunity to explore the importance of testosterone loss in the menopause and it's is used to help the back.

Thanks for Megan for giving that such a a thorough listen in the background to the planning for WhatsApp docks we have intentions which will cover.

A long-running series which this is or an always-on podcast which this is so there's a whole plan around hormones, so you know you're here if you if you're listening that we did testosterone HRT and we don't regard what we've done as the completely finished item in a we intend to come back to topics with different aspects, but shouldn't have said that I mean as a listener I felt that they didn't say that.

I did listen again.

Just to check you know they should have said perhaps look we appreciate that women take testosterone.

We haven't covered at here and we'll have lots of questions.

We will do that next time or something and I'm happy to take that on board as I say you know I haven't said actually it's quite a young programme this one where I think 12 episodes in now and we'll all the time about what the audience wants we have an email box where in communication with them.

They're sending in the topics that they want covered you know which we do pick up and we have put into the planning so

We can take that on the other thing I should say is it the team behind WhatsApp dogs is largely female the Casting of the guests is stewing female we know that are twins.

It's quite hard to distinguish between the two which if you listening you can see that they're calling each other Chris Sands and all the time and I'm checking each other so that we can tell who's the many of our listeners fondly remember Dr Michael Mosley who tragically died last year and they miss his long-running health programme.

Just one thing was this conceived as a replacement for that Siri will I commission just one thing as well and work very closely with Michael and I miss him all the time.

I'm still taking the cold showers drinking green tea trying to do my spots in my planks his voice in my head and I really miss him and you know it's great that we are still very much in touch with his wife Claire and she was really delighted when we took the decision to.

Just one thing and you can still here.

Just one thing on Sunday evenings on Radio 4 and you can also that hold back catalogue is there and we know that listeners find it really useful and while that is there and he still so much apart of that.

It was only last year that he died we didn't want to commission another just one thing because it's Michael space and we created it with him and it's it's his if you like so WhatsApp doctors intentionally different amines and and Chris in the first episode.

They're absolutely acknowledge, then there that to Michael they to work very closely with him.

So I'd rather think this is a distinctive and an additional offer in that space rather than trying to do the job that Michael did so brilliantly one interesting thing we have only had two positive comments and a lot of negative ones but the BBC press office has shared with a couple of comments from radio for Instagram and they stay for they shared with the me have all been really glowing you.

I love these guys.

Charisma, they had me in hysterics.

Not I'm not sure if those people watched the clips on insta the short clips or if they actually saw the whole listen to The Hill podcast but it does make me think that you're screaming for a younger audience because the people that responding on Instagram I probably I mean you know I'm guessing you but they probably younger and they probably listening to the podcast would that be fair? I'll tell you a secret.

I just want a really big audience.

I want everyone to enjoy it.

I think the content is there for everybody to enjoy and you know it may be that certain platforms like Instagram to encourage a younger audience to listen to it and maybe it's on Radio 3 for 2 capture a slightly older audience real Robert thank you very much for joining me on feedback.

Will there be more from Rhiannon Roberts next week responding to more of your questions about BBC podcast and I'd like to hear your thoughts particularly on BBC News podcasts.

Newscast or America's to please send an any thoughts on those if you listen no of course with podcasts you can choose what to listen to and when you listen to it listening live well sometimes you just randomly discover something special when you switch on the radio that can make you stop your car as it brings up emotions and Memories that's what happened to Lynn March from Aberdeen who sent feedback a voice note when she heard the 100 episode of add to playlist I've never given feedback before but I have just pulled over to the side of the road on the way to work because I've been so moved by something.

I just heard add to playlist.

Joy in this version I lost my dad couple years ago.

I've been going through a hard time and totally random an odd time of day.

I switch to radio and started listening to add to playlist and the first song I heard was somewhere over the rainbow which is one of my all-time favourites on my list is sorry out of order and you played both right back got them.

Thank you so much for pulling over to the side of the road and sharing that with us and I think that's a good place to leave it for this week from me and the team leader.

Thanks.

Listening and giving us your feedback to buy we pulled into what felt like an old compound you think it's a very old property and Danny robins uncanny is back.

We have three brand new summer Special episodes and things are about to get scary.

I can feel something moving up the side of the bed and I can't quite believe I'm seeing a trip to a tiny mediaeval town central Spain turns into a holiday from hell.

I could make out it's long and I am absolutely petrified absolutely petrified this was just pure terror and will investigate more by Angela and cases in an episode live at the hay festival who is feeling team Believer and who is team sceptic?

Listen now on BBC sounds.
