Download MP3Sounds music Radio podcasts BBC sounds music Radio podcasts and welcome to feedback Radio 4 Saturday Live has had a facelift actually it's my only got one faced Adrian Chiles is the new presenter and he's on his own and that's quite a star in the feedback inbox also by the REdesign to the layout of BBC so we might have got to the bottom of that and the boy from Maghera is not the head of the House of Dior in Paris is nominated for our interview of the year.
A very good Saturday morning to you Adrian Chiles here with Saturday Live in the next hour.
We'll be in the company of the great Michael Rosen is a to z of hope and Happiness exactly suits are mood this morning will also have the Ghost Writer when Saturday Live that staple of the Radio 4 weekend schedule return from a summer break in September it had a new singular Gone With The Cherry double acting in its place the distinctive voice of Brummie presenter Adrian Chiles has had many iterations over the years it was hi, Richard Coles and Nicky bady until the program moved from London to Cardiff a few years ago or Richard didn't move with it.
So his co-host nickiibaby continued with a rotation of different co-present at the time.
I talked to Richard Coles on feedback and to Colin Patterson who's head of audio for a BBC Wales and West of England about the move and what it meant for the show colours back.
Asking him this latest version of Saturday Live my name is Andy in West Sussex I have been listening to Saturday Live for some years.
I have a spare enjoyed it for the spark of nickel baby plus her barriers co-presenters with all due respect to Adrian Chiles who I do not dislike and happy listen to Radio 5 live in presenting on Saturday morning Saturday Live has become and I just another program sadly and I for one no longer listen to SO30 to find that even gave him he's just coming up from London I was late to the new format with Adrian Chiles I've been away.
Really enjoying this morning.
He comes across and humble more interested in his guests and themselves was Saturday night has been made in Cardiff for the last few years and responsible is Colin Patterson head of BBC audio for BBC Wales and the West of England and I'm delighted with me.
Thank you.
I mean I wonder if you felt the program wasn't working after you've lost Richard Coles who's presenting the programme moved to Cardiff no, not at all.
I mean as many people will remember for the last time I spoke to you back, but this is our conversation this been happening for a number of different years go as far back as 2022 when the decision was made to move a number of different programs outside of is part of the BBC across the UK strategy and so Saturday Live was one of the program.
So busy and to move and the decision was made to move it to Cardiff and that point.
Conversation with the presenters of the time which is better calls and Nikki and you remember my previous conversation that Richard made the decision that he wouldn't move to Cardiff but Nicki kindly agreed to stay on and present the program during a transition period and so Nikki is being presented the program for the last 2 years, but it was never the plan for her to be presenting a long time.
So this isn't about 1 presenter over another it's a long conversation.
That's taking place over 3 years with my god to the position where Adrian Chiles is taken up the presenting might be a little bit surprised to realise the last two years was just a transition period can I ask you why you didn't want the key to present from Cardiff to make in the key of london-based so that the conversation was always about trying to find presenters that were based in that location or willing to present from those locations.
Who's the long transition period speak to how much we care for these programs and how much we think about them that we want to get the presenter right.
We spent a long time to the audience including focus groups and so both in terms of the type of presenter that people wanted to hear in a Saturday morning and also the type of guests and what they value most about the pro.
It's giving us a real opportunity to think about what Saturday Live should be in the future and that's hopefully what when I developing with adriene listen listeners comments and audience research and feedback and not displaying to your decision to change from from 2 presenters on a Saturday morning to just 1% of Saturday mornings on Radio 4 and we take that right back to John Peel and the days of home truths.
We looked at a different range of Styles and different.
Do that and ask the audience he's about it.
We also look and I think the length of the program is also changed the various points of the year so it's now gone down to an hour.
So that was part of the decision about do we need to presenters.
I think the other thing is clear from the focus groups in the audience research is the things that people value most from Saturday Live is amazing stories of the haven't heard before and we wanted to create is much room for that as possible and clearly just for the logistics of a program if you've got to presenters, then that's more air time so part of it was about the choice of the presenter but part of it is about the focus and as80 whether it's celebrities or what it's inverted commas real people what people value most from Saturday Live is amazing stories the reason I'm a little bit surprised is the decision to have just one presenters actually upset a lot of all listeners and can please don't and I'm from Petersfield Hampshire
This is the first time I'm writing to BBC feedback, but I had to register my dissatisfaction with the new format of said they live you have stripped of all that was interesting in the programme The Casual to pay in dialogue between presenters humorous banter with the guests even the section on thank users become a boring interview instead of the lovely person focused first-person narrative.
It was originally sadly this part of the Radio 4 programming that wasn't till now a staple in my weekend listening holds.
No interest would be grateful if you could return to the original format and bring the wonderful back in the studio for made it so special hello.
My name is Carmen would hope and I live in Salford in Greater Manchester BBC Radio 4 programmes until now.
There are no pants.
No gentle after no insight.
I'm begging you restore my in a common enjoyment and replace agent Charles with someone calm chatty confident and able and curious Vikki banned from Farnham in Surrey I've listened to Saturday night for year 1 presenter now is no criticism of Adrian Chiles at each other really well humour everything used to be speaks from money when she says that the whole thing has lost the friendliness and natural discussion and complaining that it's boring in this format which is clearly not you well.
One person's boring is another person's interesting and I think Luke we have listened clearly we are in the first 2 months so the program is going to have.
Phone Diane change over time some of this is a reflection on the scale of the programme you know it has 1.7 million listeners every week last 9 Live going to be a broadchart to people who are going to be a different tastes and approaches to their left mine, but as I say for myself for the program team and can't afford presenter what you do on week one.
There's not where you'll end up at the end of your first year, so they will be developments but at the same time we have sat back and thought about it and we have made changes and that is to try and focus on what the audience told us.
They wanted most and that's not necessarily more from presenters.
It is about radio for a date fullness and that's not to see that.
That's not without humour, but the main focus is around people stories is obviously a very well-known.
Presentation style has divided listeners opinion in our inbox to the role, is that of course there are those who just don't like a style but there are those who Elsewhere and don't think that is right for this role? Why did you think that he was the best choice for Saturday Live what Adrian brings you is somebody's absolutely dedicated to the cause any time he spends with guests before programmes.
They might have thought that you put send working with a team getting the questions right getting the angles right.
We got to think about ourselves in the portfolio BBC radio station to know you've got Radio 2.
That's doing big personalities and best big guest.
You've got the commercial sector.
They're doing a lot of the same.
So what's Radio 4 on this and I go back to spend so much time talking to people about this and to say what is it you value most in the value most is amazing stories.
They haven't heard anyone else and so what will then seeking as the
That can best bring out those stories.
That's so interesting because I'm just thinking of criticism from listeners that all the fun is gone at the word that I've seen again and again and listen to comment fun.
That's on that banter.
That's disappeared from Saturday mornings and I suppose what you're saying is like if that's what you want to listen to Radio 2 on the radio station with giving you something different.
I will put it that way.
I think that Adrien has a rest I sense of humour, so I was sort of tickets with the time.
That is not fun.
It's different you know and we'll working with Nicky Baby is a fantastic broadcaster and the City this isn't about 1 personality vs.
Another that was always part of a discussion part of the plan and he doing is he is very different to that, but I think there is a lot of humour in there and there's a lot of fun and I hope there if I didn't see stick with the program will hear more of that in Thai
The previous presenter was london-based the last time you were on feedback.
You said that Saturday Live was going to have more of a Welsh feel like that came from Cardiff because a child isn't well should any in any way shape or form is the presenter so he decided to not at all.
I said was that we were you know by leaving programs across the UK it doesn't all of a sudden mean that you're going to be a opening with land of Our Fathers and condition of of Tom Jones every week.
These are about subtle changes that improve the representation for audiences across the UK and improves the creative investment the BBC make 2 people across the UK for licence fee payers allows people to develop the careers outside of London Souls all the benefits.
We have had Welsh presenters on the programme of the
People like to Stevens and Jason Mohammad and Kerry Pritchard McLean and again.
This is no on either or this is we want the best people we want the right people and we are producing a range of programmes here in Cardiff you can listen to Hugh Stevens what are you from Central Square in Cardiff every afternoon on 6 Music so this isn't about one program and presenter.
It's also your tell from my accent that I'm not from Wales and yeah.
I live here I work here and I make my life yeah, and so we can be cliched about it, but it was about having a Welsh base and a Welsh beef production team with all the benefits of described new presenters of and take a while to bed in and you're probably used to complaints when familiar what is a changed you gonna message her success with this new programme.
Is it going to be audience comments and the snow research is about ratings.
I mean, I think there's probably four main things in my head.
When is the verbatim comments and I would say Radio 4 audience sees as you know I never backwards in Coming forwards facts about certainly one.
We do that really seriously, I don't want to be globe about it being subjective.
We do genuinely read the comments that come in and take that very seriously the other to the about the data industry standard in terms of live radio listing.
That's one way of measuring it we also can monitor BBC sounds statistics and Times of and I would say that's been very encouraging and terms of growth during the time the eBay and has been on here and then before it was just brought our research.
We talked about we've already conducted either so pleased with the audience and focus groups and I think a mix of those for things is how we continue to review well Colin Patterson thank you very much and of course you can hear Saturday Live at 9.

I talked to the BBC's political editor Chris Mason he was responding to listeners comments about what they called the disproportionate coverage of reform UK and Nigel Farage
BBC honest and forthright interview the kind.
I'm sure he wishes he got from most of the people who interviews and Chris stress that we're having extremely as usual place in politics in Britain today.
What has happened in the last 12-months Andrea is a change in our politics that we haven't seen in decades and is something that I and the team.
I'm a part of a working our way through every day.
How do we calibrate this this new politics where you have an insurgent party with a very small but is the performing consistently in the opinion polls ahead of everyone else has also got the Beginnings of an electoral track record at the by-election in the local elections in England of months ago.
I and II local authority by-elections since then they suggest there is something in that opinion poll performance we have to reflect that but it is it is it.
Uncharted territory that we are we are feeling our way through that interview generated a lot of interest from listeners Xenon it from Peterborough in the amount of coverage that Nigel Farage reform on the BBC because they are making the political weather outrageous and controversial politician and the BBC Westcountry standard pack 10 mocks me do you might be busy to find the biggest supported.
What is going on his dishes you seem to be drawn two controllers you just because in Europe you make more exciting during or anything and you hope this will chat more your services and the content of what you reporting hello Steve back.
This is Rosemary Leadbeater from Banbury in Oxfordshire when asked about being consistencies between Seats in parliament and party coverage, generally.
Mason suggested that the BBC aims to report on the changing mood of the people yes, I'm sure this is true, but also Nigel Farage weather love him or load him not interest sometimes agitation in what he says and how he says it therefore he is good for the viewing listening figures hello there this is from Stokesley North Yorkshire I was listening to feedback concerning the alleged over coverage of reform by the BBC and Chris Masons very polite response to the criticisms speaking to someone who is voted for three different parties during the course of my life.
I can tell you have confidence that voters of all political parties believe that the BBC is biased against the party of their choice.
This is natural the viewer is the one that carries the by Mackay obviously the perceived the BBC's normally neutral stance is negative if you'd like to hear the whole interview with Chris Mason and last week's program.
It's available on BBC signs.
Comments over the last few weeks about some issues listeners have experienced with the new BBC sounds website layout from Churchtown my preferred listening to a previously broadcast Radio 4 programme.
It's a selected from the schedule and a web browser on Android and listen now a days ago play icon showed and BBC sounds over that sell for the Close button, which was selected as an had a time bar with start and end times a play pause button 20 seconds forward backward buttons and the ability to place the cursor anywhere on the times are all very convenient now BBC sounds takes over immediately with no time no control over the plane pause useless hello my name is Shirley Goodwin
And I live in Guildford in Surrey and I'm ringing to say how disappointed her and with the new BBC sounds layout it's less clear and is definitely not user-friendly you on this would be an improvement some very disappointed with this and as a lifelong user of Radio 4 on Radio 4 Extra please can you sort this issue soon, Worcestershire what's the point of the recent update to BBC sounds computer previously when listening to to our program like sounds of the 70s.
I could skip the week old news bulletin halfway through the programs.
I could jump back to a section.
I wanted to hear again.
Maybe for contact details or the address of a useful website.
It's clearly erect.
And hopefully will be quickly reversed in Croydon has the BBC done with the new format the BBC sounds player backwards this applies to listening to and subsequently a few days later listening to feedback.
I found these controls to know pop-up window to tell us how this works so many comments we asked BBC signs to look at what the problem could be and also why they changed in the first place.
He was the response maybe spokesperson.
We recently on the BBC sounds website so that you can keep listening while browsing other content on BBC sounds previously programmes with stop playing if you navigate away from the play page which people fine.
I'm sure they did a good move but what about the functions people say they can't find any more the ability to rewind live shows or fast forward through on-demand programs is still these buttons have moved to a new player at the bottom of the page this experience has been available on the BBC sounds mobile and tablet app for some time and feedback we have received.
It has been very positive with now bought that same designed the website for a more consistent experience.
We will continue listening to audiences feedback to make BBC sounds the it can be so basically the website has now caught up with the app good to know but if that's not your experience well.
You know what to do.
Do you get in touch the nice people BBC signs of got very used to the feedback team competition is holding up in feedbacks annual search for the best interview across all forms of BBC audio.
That's radio and podcasts.
Most deserving of the title interview of the year I'll be announcing the winner in a stressful program around Christmas and the winner will be chosen by a panel of listeners.
Will this week is Leslie McCauley got in touch to nominate John Wilson's recent interview with Northern Ireland fashion designer Jonathan Anderson in this cultural life has recently been appointed creative fashion brand Christian Dior but this couldn't be further from the early life growing up in a village near the market town of Magherafelt in Mid Ulster during Northern Ireland decades of conflict you clean a white gets Leslie's nomination atlasi McAuley from Portstewart in Northern Ireland I would like to say how wonderful and engaging the interview Jonathan Anderson was on this cultural life with John Wilson
Fluences and experiences that have inspired their own creativity and John Wilson am I getting this episode is the interview intriguing as Jonathan himself is this person and opening up about his rural background in Northern Ireland was particularly fascinating as I know the area.
He grew up in wouldn't be where I am today without Northern Ireland anywhere when you grow up tells you who you want to be or tell you what you want to escape from.
It is not I hear stories from my part of the included and interviews like this.
So I found this particular interview fascinating and relatable have been in the house, but you know I am quite upset by Living Next Door to your grandfather's phone.
Won't you tell me the time is wellies and jeans and yoga is very being interviewed.
Got Jonathan to open up about his daughter growing up in The Troubles become immune to it if that means that you're born into your immune to a danger and violence so many things in life that I wish I never saw me in Magherafelt I remember when you went to school and the next day the entire Street the garden you know the precise moment at the could have almost cleaned his mother's life.
My mother has gone to return shoes and Omar and she gets to the bottom part of the town and had the car park to the other top of the street and she then went up in the place where you can go to town because there is bomb at the time.
I need to get home like I've got the things you go through Wars gets into the car and driving off the side of the town that she wasn't completely evaporated.
There was obvious respect between the interview and the interviewer throughout the interview.
I loved hi John got Jonathan Scott process in designing a new collection especially Jonathan said it has to turn you on so it will you know what your designer collection is like to be class.
You're going to be doing with each other because you could do 100 looks in one day.
I'll try and get things on and it might be only two looks where you're like.
There is something that we feel that we can explore further and what do you how do you know what that something is just instinctive? Is it just you know I always does it turn you on his personality came across as some grinded logically focused hard-working and considered and on a personal level with the top of the program.
I build you was probably the most important fashion designer in the world right now so at that.
What drives you on creative that you'll never get there somehow? I from me what tries me every morning.
Is that it can always be better like to nominate this interview for interviews the year as I believe it deserves to be recognised further well.
Thank you.
Lesley McCauley putting out for is an excellent interview in one that I shared with lots of family and friends and if you hear an interview across BBC audio, which sounds like for you.
