It's just licence fee payers who are locked out The venture is estimated to cost 115.6m over five years, 16.4m of which would have come from the BBC licence holders, based on having six partners, before Arqiva joined. Four months later, it fleshed Canvas out in a new, 76-page document. Canvas is disclosing its specs rather later in the scrutiny process. - guardian.co.uk

informitv - BT reveals Vision 2.0 for television

BT is persisting with its television offering, planning to supplement its BT Vision broadband video service with additional broadcast bandwidth to deliver Sky Sports channels for its subscribers, who still number less than half a million. The British telecommunications company is a partner in the proposed Project Canvas platform but it is not entirely clear how this will fit with BT Vision. BT also plans to extend its investment in bringing fibre closer to customers, within reach of two-thirds of the country, enabling it to offer bandwidth comparable to cable. - informitv.com

Cuts of about 66m are expected in a newly reintegrated department, which gives Hunt responsibility for the Olympics as well as oversight of sport, media and thearts. - guardian.co.uk

Dont blame CRR for your troubles, review chair tells ITV | Media | guardian.co.uk

ITV should stop blaming the complex system of restrictions on how it can sell advertising airtime for its woes, according to the chair of the Competition Commission's investigation. The problem, however, is who should review the industry. The ideal candidate is Ofcom, but before the election the Conservatives made it plain that they want Ofcom stripped of its policy-making power and a full-scale alteration of how TV advertising is sold sounds a lot like a policy decision. - guardian.co.uk

ITV loses advertising charge ruling -Advertising, Media - The Independent

ITV's mass audience appeal means that rules governing how much it can charge advertisers must stay in place, the competition watchdog ruled today. ITV wants the rules to be scrapped altogether, arguing that they are no longer appropriate in a world of digital TV and leads to a risk-averse attitude among programmers and production teams. The broadcaster - home to shows such as X Factor and Coronation Street - accounted for 982 of the top 1,000 most-watched programmes on commercial television last year, the Competition Commission said. - independent.co.uk

ITV Response to TCC decision on CRR - ITV Press Centre

ITV and other UK media companies are increasingly unable to sustain valuable public service programming such as high quality news and drama. Restrictions to the supply of high quality programmes and valuable audiences on which the UKs advertisers rely have reduced the commercial sectors ability to compete with the BBC. Todays decision on CRR is based on the misconception that the competitive environment is still very similar to that identified in the Competition Commissions 2003 report. - itv.com

Have the cracks begun to show in Skys duty of impartiality? -TV Radio, Media - The Independent

For 21 years, Sky News has been regarded by left-leaning politicians as the most acceptable face in Rupert Murdoch's hydra-headed British media business. Committed to the rules of impartiality which govern British news broadcasters, the network has been held up as a shining example that contradicts the theory that every outpost of the Murdoch empire is signed up to the Australian-born tycoon's personal agenda. Sky News has repeatedly thrashed its bigger BBC rival in television awards ceremonies and has, for almost a generation, been the channel of choice for the newsrooms of national newspapers who admire its speed and agility in covering breaking stories. - independent.co.uk

informitv - 3DTV projections pessimistic despite promotion

Only 100,000 homes worldwide will be watching 3DTV programming by the end of 2010, rising to 22 million by the end of 2015, representing 1.6 of television homes. Although there are significant growth opportunities beyond this, stereoscopic 3DTV will not be as significant as colour or high-definition, as some have suggested, and will never be adopted by the mass market, Informa Telecoms and Media predicts. For manufacturers, 3D is a relatively inexpensive way of differentiating their displays and maintaining a price premium. - informitv.com

National broadcasting | TV matters | Television radio | The Guardian

One of my children was asked in an infant school quiz the other day what the letters BBC stand for, but this question seems increasingly more suitable for philosophy or economics classes at university. The prime ministerial TV debates and especially the first, on domestic issues were complicated by the need to explain that certain policies on health and education, for example didn't apply outside England. On Sunday morning, Sky TV which doesn't use regional opt-outs offered its national and international audiences a debate between the Scottish leaders. - guardian.co.uk

Do we really need to watch the election in HD? According to Sky News we do -UK Politics, UK - The Independent

For an election as closely run as this one seems likely to be, a single Swingometer was never going to be enough. Sky News is basing its pitch for your election night attention on the attraction of seeing Adam Boulton, Jeremy Thompson et al strutting their stuff in high definition. Panasonic DMR-BW780 Review - Home Cinema Reviews - TrustedReviews

Like Freesat HD, it provides a way of getting high-definition TV without paying a penny in subscription fees, but the ability to get it through a rooftop aerial is the crucial factor that will push high-definition closer to mass-market ubiquity. Like most new technologies, there are obstacles to overcome you have to fork out for new equipment and at present only a few areas of the country can receive it but once kit prices drop and the whole country is covered, Freeview HD is almost guaranteed to be a huge hit. Aesthetically the unit looks like the rest of Panasonics recorder range a slim black deck with an obligatory blue light and a couple of tinted flaps covering the disc tray, connections and buttons. - trustedreviews.com
