Clover’s Week: MHEG lives - Broadband TV News

The majority of the two million or so Freeview HD boxes in the market are compliant to the D Book 6.2.1. However, some do not support MHEG streaming as they were finished before the standards were completed. These services are essential for growth, and one would assume that sooner or later catch-up services from ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 will appear. - broadbandtvnews.com

Causey said her station, which has an annual budget of 1.6m, is facing cuts of 14 as part of the director general's Delivering Quality First initiative DQF. Causey's email, sent to Thompson, echoed concerns being privately expressed by several BBC executives that Radio 4 was being safeguarded at the expense of the corporation's local radio output. Radio cuts a disaster for 'localism' and community work - UK news - guardian.co.uk

The Government's new 'community organiser' scheme has just announced its first 47 recruits in a 15 million programme yet at the same time, the biggest community organisation in the country is facing walloping cuts. Good luck to the pioneers organised by Locality, the latest in a line of arms length attempts to galvanise social action, but they will be hard put to it to match BBC local radio. It is ironic that promotion of the community organisers kicks off by saying that they are starting work 'from Cockermouth in Cumbria to Penzance in Cornwall.' Cockermouth in recent years has seen some of local radio's finest hours. - guardian.co.uk

BBC to slash local news programmes to save Panorama - TV Radio, Media - The Independent

The BBC's current affairs show Inside Out has been made the victim of brutal cuts to the organisation's regional newsrooms, while the flagship show Panorama is allocated an increase in budget. Sky could soften cuts to BBC 'by waiving transmission fees' - Media - guardian.co.uk

Commercial broadcasters are interested in charging Sky for the right to show their channels. Ironically, in the United States, News Corp, the 39 owner of Sky, has successfully persuaded local pay television operators to fork out retransmission fees for its Fox free-to-air network. Historically, the four network broadcasters received no money from cable and satellite operators for their channels, but the situation has changed in recent years. - guardian.co.uk

DQF: Martin Kelner on local radio s future : Radio Today

Radio presenter and writer Martin Kelner says BBC local radio should be radically overhauled to make it more local. That is how the BBC sees it anyway, responding to swingeing cuts or the economic facts of life, as they might be called in the commercial sector. The cuts outlined last week are due to be implemented in 2013 after the customary attenuated round of public consultation, letters to the Daily Telegraph, marches on Broadcasting House, and so on. - radiotoday.co.uk

BBC - Research and Development: BBC R

The BBC has about a million hours of video and audio content, plus a wealth of documents, including the original scripts. Most of this content is still on magnetic tape, film, records or paper and so needs to be digitised and made searchable before it can be contributed to the Digital Public Space which was the subject of a recent technology podcast from the Guardian. Research is continuing to extend the digitisation process to other types of video tape and to develop automated methods to detect picture and sound faults to ensure good quality digitisation and to assist restoration. - bbc.co.uk

It's the end of the road for BBC cuts - until next time - Media - The Observer

Take out 20 of BBC costs, lose 2,000 jobs before 2017, and there won't be any more fat or much sinew left to cut. Another 1.6 never mind 16 off the top and the corporation will be shrinking pitifully before our eyes, ditching channels and not worth the money we're being asked to pay. Stephen Glover: The BBC is wrong to cut back local radio - Stephen Glover, Opinion - The Independen

Incompetent councillors and dodgy businessmen must have drawn comfort from last week's announcement by Mark Thompson, director general of the BBC, about cutbacks to local radio and television. During the afternoon the output of your local station will amalgamate with that of one or more of its neighbours. - independent.co.uk

BBC cuts will have little impact on viewers - this time - Media - The Guardian

If the BBC director general Mark Thompson is right that there is not much fat left to cut, then the next time he will face stark choices. He has found a hefty 700m in annual savings by 2016/17 to ensure that the licence fee is held flat, but he has done it in such a way that there will be little impact on viewers.
