Premier League TV ruling is victory for lawyers not hard-pressed fans - David Conn - Football - The Guardian

The EU views the issue of football on TV through the prism of free competition throughout Europe. When the EU becomes involved in sport, the organisation which speaks for all Europe seems too often wrapped up in a language all of its own. Although the cause at stake the right to watch football on TV in a pub on a Saturday afternoon may not appear quite to justify accession to the battlefields of Europe, the decision was keenly awaited because Karen Murphy's fight did seem to encapsulate an important public gut-concern. - guardian.co.uk

Premier League avoids TV rights meltdown but questions go unanswered - Football - The Guardian

Premier League insiders said they were quietly satisifed at the outcome of the European court of justice ruling on TV rights. Within minutes of the European court of justice delivering its ruling in a case that had threatened fundamentally to destabilise the rights model that had allowed the Premier League to grow its revenues from 304m to 3.5bn in the space of 20 years, Karen Murphy's pub was filled with reporters seeking her views. Some experts claimed that the ruling, which said enforcing territorial exclusivity was at odds with European free trade laws but that the Premier League might be able to enforce limited copyright restrictions in pubs, would lead to cataclysmic and fundamental changes. - guardian.co.uk

Premier League Soccer TV Agreements Breach EU Antitrust Rules, Court Says - Bloomberg

The court ruling still gives the League the right to prevent the unauthorized use of its copyrights by bars and clubs, the League said in an e-mailed statement today. She spent 800 pounds a year on a Greek decoder card to show games rather than 700 pounds a month for a Sky package. Unauthorized use gives rise to both civil and criminal penalties, the League said in the statement. - bloomberg.com

Mrs Murphy took up her battle against the league after being told she could not use a cheap foreign provider to show games at her pub, The Red White and Blue, in Portsmouth. Thursday is d-day for DQF

In last year's government spending review, it was agreed with BBC management that the licence fee would be frozen at 145.50 until 2016-17. In January, Thompson said he believed the BBC could find another 4 of the current spend that could be invested in new 'quality content' and digital developments. The DQF consultation was divided into nine workstreams focusing on subjects including journalism, productivity and digital as well as television and radio. - bbc.co.uk

The EU's Premier League rights ruling explained - Media - guardian.co.uk

Charlie Adam of Liverpool scores during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Bolton. Tuesday's judgment marks the latest and most significant step in a long-running saga that began when the Premier League took legal action against a number of pubs that were showing live football on a Saturday afternoon by beaming it in from overseas. Murphy's lawyers argued she was entitled to show the matches because they had paid a subscription to a Greek broadcaster and that to enforce Sky's exclusivity in the UK was against European free trade laws. - guardian.co.uk

Premier League fans can buy cheap foreign TV coverage, EU rules - Media - guardian.co.uk

Football fans will potentially be able to watch cut-price Premier League matches, after the European Union's highest court ruled on Tuesday that it is not illegal for individuals to buy set-top box decoder cards from foreign broadcasters. The Premier League, which sells TV rights exclusively to broadcasters across Europe on a territory-by-territory basis, has been clamping down on British pubs buying in live coverage from foreign broadcasters. Sky's share price was down by just over 3 to 635.50p at about 9.20am on Tuesday, as the City reacted to the European ruling. - guardian.co.uk

Premier League braced for ruling of Europe's top court over TV rights - Football - guardian.co.uk

The Premier League has convened a team to examine all the possible implications of the European court of justice's ruling on its TV rights deal. In the short term, the decision could allow pubs to show matches on a Saturday at 3pm, which the football authorities have long argued would result in lower league attendances. In the longer term that would probably force the Premier League to sell its rights on a pan-European basis to a single media group a scenario that could impact on its revenues and throw up its own European competition issues. - guardian.co.uk

It's a costly business, and while a vendor will be eager to work with popular services, such as the BBC's iPlayer or Google's Picasa, it may be less keen to enable other, less well-known online content sources. YouView has published its draft user interface and search policy for consultation with the industry including which content gets placed where and how it will be presented to viewers. The IPTV solution, which includes seven major broadcast and telecommunications partners, is apparently still 'on track' for an early 2012 launch, and it is now beginning to get to the nitty gritty of UI and how content will be surfaced. BBC3 and BBC4 need to be sorted out if the BBC is to save itself - Media - The Guardian

All perfectly understandable concerns genuinely held very strongly by a certain Radio 4 type of BBC loyalist not to mention plenty in the Westminster village and the chattering classes beyond. Both channels were born as a result of a licence fee deal negotiated by John Birt in which essentially the BBC got a major financial leg-up in return for helping the government achieve digital switchover. The government was keen because of the expected cash windfall it expected from the future sale of the old analogue spectrum, and the BBC because it would get the licence fee cash to fund a major digital expansion. - guardian.co.uk
