Mike/Steve - I am pretty sure the Tosh is defective. I shall try to find time to take it back tomorrow - I decided to set it up as freeview tuner unit direct to TV to see if it worked - all connections were tight and I tried 2 different SCARTS but each time got a decent picture for less than 5 minutes and then it disappeared - power light still on front panel but no pwer. Seeemd to be using SCART RGB rather than AV. Think I'll go for the Smart TV & Blu-ray suggestion if I can get a refund on the Tosh as I'm convinced its defective (Lucky I got it in store not on-line!).

Oh and JB thanks for your help too - as you can see I couldn't get that far. My signal has been pretty good previously - Post code is SG7 if that helps.

Steve P: 'GHASTLY design. And no retaining screws'

Yes - as someone with a CRT TV, I know what you mean. They are heavy and break the sockets (I think one of my imputs is wonky, and the picture goes purple if the socket moves a little), dont always go in straight, and there are only so many connects on the back of a TV, which are now outnumbered by the boxes that need to be connected (I've just bought a scart switch).

However, you've also proved the point I've just made - at some point its just tough to put new technology into older equipment, and its often worth thinking sideways, or just thinking beyond the next box that fits.

Chris: If its dodgy, then thats it.

As far as a new TV concerned - get the size right (there is a discussion about this elsewhere...!), but if your about 4-6 feet away, and you've got a 23in at present, then 32in would probably do (although 1.6m-2m might nudge towards a 40in). Best value at the moment is the LG N575 - was £299. OK, a slightly clunky style, but great picture (I'd buy it). Currently on huge backorder (because its such a good deal, as is the 42in - http://www.johnlewis.com/…5776 - also on backorder) - but hopefully available for a little while yet.

Best for smart (all catchup services) - the Samsung 5500 Buy Samsung UE32F5500 LED HD 1080p Smart TV, 32" with Freeview HD online at John Lewis - picture OK, but lots of value. Around £350 you will do fine on all four major brands, and everything is Full HD, Freeview HD, Smart (at least Iplayer) and has wifi. Normally 3 HDMI's, 1 scart and RGB, plus 2 usb's (Sony 654 only has 2 HDMI's).

Again, all four brands for decent blu-rays from about £50 - plays everything, Smart too, and about £99 is wified as well. Could be fine for less than £400 all in, plus some HDMI's, and the recording part continues with the Humax.

Its a really good time to buy (prices wont get less, and there is still stock), so find somewhere decent to look and ask questions.

Chris : Although its neither here nor there now that you are thinking about making changes to your set up, but on the subject of your present equipment, although your Toshiba recorder could indeed have developed a fault, but though on the other hand the partial post code supplied could indicate that you might be located as close as 9 miles (or even less) away from the Sandy transmitter whereby "if" you are using a roof mounted aerial, especially if boosted in any way, then the signal received could be a little too strong for the Toshiba's tuner hence the erratic reception.

Humax devices in general being far more able to cope with this sort of situation hence don't suffer from signal overload problems in the same way as many other TV's and boxes do.

Hi,
I have a skyHD multiroom box that keeps losing signal, I on occasion get it working again only for it to lose signal again within an hour or two.. My main box is perfect. I have only had the equipment for just over 12 months, so my warranty is up.. I have tried the first 2 of your methods, but I still have problems.. I was wondering wether or not the box is liable to fail if it gets warm or that is usual.. I'm thinking about doing the update of software but would like to know wether it is the phone line or broadband router that I need to plug in for this process, and if I should keep the viewing card in or take it out... I have contacted sky, but they want £65.. Bit of a joke that they expect me to pay for equipment that doesn't last 13 months.. Cheers..

If it might be overload try unpluggung the aerial and using just a fly lead.

Attenuators are cheap enough to try out

Hi,
I use a digibox on my only TV. Until last month I've had no problems with reception strength. But now most days it's continually blocking and going to 'no signal' BBC channels are slightly stronger than others.
I'm not al all technical so don't understand a lot of the responses.
Post code is RG7, Hannington transmitter, but that says there are no problems. Please help.

I have just connected a magic eye to a bedroom television via the RF2 output on the skybox in my lounge. The sky remote when used in the bedroom is working as it changes the channels as expected. However, I am not able to pick up the sky picture on the bedroom tv. Have tried to change the sources from tv to others, but nothing selects the channel being displayed in the lounge. Have even retuned the bedroom tv without success. The bedroom tv only shows the normal tv and free view channels, but not the channels through the sky box. Any thoughts?

Nicki: Your bedroom television must be able to receive analogue pictures which are the type of broadcast used prior to terrestrial switchover to digital (Freeview). Retuning the digital part will achieve nothing.

Knowledge of the model number should allow checking of whether the TV has capability to receive analogue. If the user manual can be found online it may be possible for us to indicate what you need to do in order to view the output of the Sky box.
