Andrew Toomer: The levels recommended for DTT reception are between 45 to 65 dBuV, however in practice 6dB should always be added above the minimum level to allow for variations in signal strength thereby making the minimum level 51dB, and so the target levels should be between 51dB - 71dB.

It should also be noted that erratic reception can be expected if the minimum signal level falls below 45 dBuV, whereas on the other hand care must be taken to ensure that the level does not exceed 80 dBuV or this is liable to result in picture problems being seen such as severe glitching / freezing or indeed a blank screen due to the excessively high signal level triggering instability in the tuners RF input / mixer stage.

Another thing that needs to be considered will be the signal quality.

This is just as important as strength, your strength levels do not matter as long as they are within the spec mentioned by JB38, however the signal quality is critical. This can be measure using a spectrum analyser.

You can have perfect signal strength and still get poor quality reception meaning you will still have problems.

I keep losing subtitles and unless the TV is stuffed it must be the transmitter and it means that as a deaf person the channel I may want to watch is of no use to me. Is this a common problem?

Hi, I have a new led 42" TV and new TV outdoor ariels were added to our very small block 2/3 yrs back, my picture was perfect, it dosnt have smart TV but I was happy to pay £600 for good quality, anyway a carpenter put my TV on the wall last week and the picture isn't good, it's patchy and bit distorted at times, he checked wires thousands of times and even bought gold fittings ( femail to mail) to no avail, he unplugged ariel to move it and then shockingly the TV worked without ariel plugged in, I was informed by another that it's the fm ariel ? Anyway it was still same patchy reception, it's like it's not connecting to the outside 1 as otherwise it would be good? Please help as I can't waist any more money
