Channel One to close, Challenge to come to Freeview

Changes to Freeview after Sky buys VTV channels

Changes to Freeview after Sky buys VTV channels
published on UK Free TV

Sky is closing one pay and one free channel from the portfolio it bought from Virgin TV, because they match channels already provided by Sky.

Bravo and Channel One (which was Virgin 1 and before that FTN) will close.

This means that the Channel One slot on Freeview will be replaced with the quiz show channel Challenge.

Challenge is now in the Freeview guide on 46. If you can't see it yet, please follow these instructions on your set-top box or Freeview TV: My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound or the channel line up is wrong - ukfree.tv.

Briantist: Why are said advertisers and share holders not held responsible for the building torrent of crap that passes itself off for TV at the expense of good quality programs and channels.

Illiad: I, for one have been going back more and more to what I was doing before multi channel TV and voting with my feet. Instead of moaning lets do something about it, use the off button on the TV.

Linda Fletcher: I am sorry to see the end of Star Trek and all the other good programs that C1 broadcast and I think that what RM has done here is totally despicable and he should not be allowed to monopolise the TV and media in the way that he has. Before anyone says that it is a free market let me point out that it WAS a free market until RM started to swallow everything up and shut it down, C1 is a case in point. He has got away with it for far to long and the result is anything that will make the most profit for the cronies at the top while those who pay do not get value for money and those who only have freeview see it go down the pan under an ever growing pile of junk. But we make the biggest mistake of all when we turn on the rubbish TV. Use the off button instead, if no one watches it there is no point in them broadcasting it and it sends a clear message that we want quality channels and quality programs and not entire channels that are literally old rubbish.

Briantist: It is no longer a free market when one company has the monopoly and can do exactly what it pleases even to the point of shutting down good quality popular channels and replacing them with pure garbage. Just because something can be done does not mean that it should be done.

My TV off button beckons as does the book I want to finish writing.

Bally python: Because they don't care about quality, they care about making a profit.

"Quality" programmes cost more to make but do not attract sufficient additional viewers, reducing or removing the profit, whilst increasing the risk.

Tony: You are not the only one who is upset at the demise of C1 and Star Trek not to mention all the other top quality programs as well. I suspect the reasons why this channel is being shut down are down to envy, jealousy and above all greed.

Briantist: I see what you are saying but this being the case then TV is really set to go down the toilet. As for them not caring about the quality of TV, my mother has a saying that should apply to them and it is this: Don't care was made to care. I have already explained how we make them care. If enough people switched off they would have to take notice.

yes, everyone has the right to buy a very heap device, and wonder why it fails in 6 months.... :)

And no, it is not a monopoly, until it fully takes over Virgin, freesat, freeview, and all those smaller cable companies...

It is just the same with Microsoft, they dont buy them up, so they can continue making loads of money legally, while 90% of people blindly buy it...

illiad: If a device fails within the first two years, you are entitled to a free and immediate replacement under the law.

The definition of a monopoly does not mean "100% of the market", it means "dominates" the market in such a way it can distort the ability of others.

trouble is, only 10% of the population knows how to find this site, or even just get the internet started!!

and where are the 'massive queues' outside the 'monopolies commission' then???

queuing up for their brand new HD box from virgin or sky I will bet...

Bally python: It worth pointing out that BBC One costs £1,373m a year to fund, BBC TWO £575m, ITV1 about £1bn, Channel 4 about £600m.

Most digital channels are much less - the large ones such as E4 has about £60m, More4 about £30m.

Dave, for example, has revenues of about £4m. That's about 1/350th of that of BBC One.
